3.0 out of 5 stars Very odd, yet interesting
I found Frailty a difficult movie to get interested in at first, but the child actor who played Fenton did a very good job. The ending didn't have a great resolution, but it was still an interesting movie to see what kind of sick people live in our world.

Fenton Mieks (Matthew McConaughey) goes to the FBI one night and calmly tells the agent (Powers Boothe) that his father and brother were mass murderers known as the "God's Hands Killers." In flashbacks, we see young Fenton and his little brother Adam sharing a good life with their father (Bill Paxton), until the night Dad claimed he was visited by an angel and told to destroy demons. Dad received the names of his victims from God, brought them home to be killed, and then buried them in a nearby rose garden with the help of his sons. Little Adam thinks this is all great, but Fenton thinks Dad is crazy. For his disbelief, Dad puts Fenton down in the "dungeon" and leaves him there...

This is quite a creepy, intense, and effective thriller that has kept me glued to the screen for five viewings. The first time, I was confused about what I saw, but my questions have since been answered. The script is terrific - the father commits horrifying acts in an almost serene way, because he is convinced he's doing the right thing; this keeps you wondering: Is he really divinely called to kill demons, or is he just insane?

Star/director Bill Paxton is completely convincing and scary as the father, and Matt O'Leary gives a heartbreaking performance as young Fenton. This is an unusual and unforgettable horror story.

4.0 out of 5 stars The scariest, most suspenseful thriller I've ever seen!, Aug 14 2006
This review is from: Frailty (DVD)
This movie is the creepiest and best psychological thriller I've seen! Great acting and directing. (The only example of real acting I've ever seen on Matthew McConaughey's part! A welcome departure from his usual romantic-comedy schtick.) I am certainly not right-wing or pro-death ... I'm almost as liberal as you can get. But I don't brand a film as "irresponsible" or "unethical" just because it portrays views that I don't personally believe in, or acts that I would never condone in reality. That's why it's so fortunate that this is in fact NOT reality, and just a movie. I am not so impressionable as to think that this movie is telling me to pass judgment on others, and be their executioner if necessary. So many movies ask "What if ...?", and this one is no exception. It's called FICTION. So if you can appreciate a great suspense movie, and you don't suffer from the bizarre compulsion to act out what you see in the movies, then I highly recommend you watch "Frailty". It is a real nail-biter, and great entertainment.

I found Frailty a difficult movie to get interested in at first, but the child actor who played Fenton did a very good job. The ending didn't have a great resolution, but it was still an interesting movie to see what kind of sick people live in our world.

There have been a series of murders that are being referred to as the God's Hands murder case. One night Fenton Mieks goes to the FBI to confess that he knows who the murderer was. From there on, he tells the FBI the story of his past.

His father, one day, received a vision from God. The father claimed that God wanted the three of them (him and his two sons) to destroy demons that are living among them. Not only that, judgement day was close at hand. And a few days later, the father received more visions. One about three chosen weapons and even received his first list of who to kill.

Fenton has difficulty accepting that his father is killing demons and not humans, however, his other brother, Adam, seems to believe his father readily. Will Fenton's life be at risk? Will he learn to accept what is going on? Or is there another way out?

4.0 out of 5 stars Paxton's directorial debut is Outstanding!, Oct 6 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Frailty (DVD)
Bill Paxton was made to be a director... I love the fact that this is a very frightening film without the associated gore... it's more along the lines of Hitchcock. The acting is first rate and the whole tone of the film makes you wonder... who really is a demon in this World? Bill Paxton as a director is outstanding... and this role is the kind of role I enjoy seeing him play. I cannot wait to see more... from this new and yet extremely talented director.

5.0 out of 5 stars An American Masterpiece, Jun 17 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Frailty (DVD)
They don't get much better than this! A "classic" representation of how "less" can be "more", a lot more. Paxton assembles a great little film, despite budget and time restrictions. A minor masterpiece and a brilliant effort by a first time director. This was a collabrative effort by all and it shows! No one made a lot of money on this film, but they did leave a "how to" guide for other small budget independent film makers of the way it should be done!

5.0 out of 5 stars an astounding debut from paxton the director, May 24 2004
This review is from: Frailty (DVD)
bill paxton proves his artistry in one of the most unique,
textured, original, and unforgettable films in a very long time.
the film has the odour of backwoods ho de ho religious fanatacism and the ambience reeks of unparalleled horror.
it will stay with you for a long time after.

4.0 out of 5 stars redemption or hellfire, May 24 2004
By
"read_along" (Toronto, Ontario Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Frailty (DVD)
It's about a father of two sons who believes that God is directing him to destroy demons. It's about the two sons trying to decide if they believe or not. It's about the creepiest movie I've ever seen in my life. I get scared just thinking about it. Not because of blood and gore. That doesn't bother me. It's about the mental state the movie puts you in because in a way you are one of those two sons and whichever one you side with it's either redemption or hellfire.
