5.0 out of 5 stars santana is pure joy!
i like this album more than "supernatural", it seems to hold more substance, the latter only really containing 2 stand out tracks, "smooth" & "maria, maria", for me.
"nothing at all" is pure angst genius, great authentic latin music/shamen-style lyrics.
"you are my kind" (seal) a totally gorgeous love...

3.0 out of 5 stars Shaman
This album is good. What I don't like about it, is that here is a bunch of guest musicians. But, some places are good. But not all. And he doesn't play a lot of songs, which are performed without any guest musicians.

Carlos Santana is a great guitarist. My favorite Santana album is Abraxas. After like a maybe sixth album, his songwriting got worse and worse. And he...

"nothing at all" is pure angst genius, great authentic latin music/shamen-style lyrics.
"you are my kind" (seal) a totally gorgeous love song.
"foo foo" is a big song with a big sound, fun to listen to, but would i'm sure come into it's own played live in a huge arena setting.
"america" a great rocking song, with a political statement, a love affair (with the US) that's now lost it's magic !
"ay ay ay" again is a totally blow away latin dance tune, that's irresistable & impossible to sit/stand still to!

"one of these days" another political song, i love this one,
my other favourite is "why don't you & i..." a totally gorgeous song, whether sung by chad kroeger (as here) or the other version with alex band - a great rock/love song.
my fave santana album to date.
when this guy eventually gets around to releasing his greatest compilation album, it's gonna be a real humdinger, i'm sure!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Mix Of Old-School Guitar Heroics And New-School Pop-Rock, Jun 20 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Shaman (Audio CD)
With SUPERNATURAL, Carlos Santana learned how to mix his old-school guitar heroics with current pop-rock, but on SHAMAN, he perfects it. Whoever is shouting about how this album is a sellout DOES NOT KNOW WHAT HE'S TALKING ABOUT! This album is a wonderful mix of various styles, and even has Michelle Branch singing more soulfully than on her own CDs. On "America", with P.O.D., Carlos even experiments with a Montrose/Foghat/Ted Nugent style- and creates the highlight of the album. You should get this one after you get his first three albums, THE ESSENTIAL SANTANA, THE BEST OF SANTANA VOLS. 1 & 2, MOONFLOWER, GREATEST HITS, BORBOLETTA, and AMIGOS.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!!!!!!!!!!!, May 2 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Shaman (Audio CD)
I think this album is every bit as good as "Supernatural". My favorite tracks are by Seal and Placido Domingo as the featured singers. I think that any interest in Latin music was started by Mr. Santana and he is still the ruling king!!!!!!!!!!!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars A follow-up of massive proportions., Mar 7 2004

Within the thirty-year period between 1972-2002, Santana released a multitude of semi-successful albums that didn't totally eclipse his musical genius. With the release of Supernatural, he proved that he could once again unleash his creative ability to collaborate with others and turn out a wicked piece of work. With Shaman, Santana continues to work with a multitude of artists including Seal, Macy Gray, and Placido Domingo (of the Three Tenors). By constantly touring and writing with other musicians, he is amalgamating his style to work directly with mainstream rock and pop. Carlos' guitar is totally constant, sliding smoothly through the melodies and sounding effortless. The Latin psychedelic overtones help set the mood as Carlos draws upon the creative energy of those he records with. It sounds slightly different with each consecutive track, but leaves the same overall impression. Shaman doesn't capture the raw power of his 1971 release Santana & Buddy Miles Live, however, it makes up for its faults with it's diversity. I'd say give it a shot and pick it up if you liked Supernatural. Shaman debued at #1 on the Billboard charts (A first for Carlos), and went platinum within it's first week of release.

1.0 out of 5 stars Santana ripping off Silver, Feb 9 2004

The Game Of Love (Featuring Michelle Branch) is a complete ripoff of Wham Bam Shang-a-Lang by the 70s group "Silver". In fact, the song may even be in the same key...check out Have a Nice Day Super Hits of the 70s on CD Vol 19 and listen to that track...Influence is one thing, but this song is a complete ripoff musically...Grammy winner my a**

5.0 out of 5 stars Lovely music, Dec 27 2003
By
This review is from: Shaman (Audio CD)
I am familiar with Santana's classic 70es records.
I do not know names of supporting artists and musicians appearing on this CD (I have stopped following current trends in popular music long time ago), but in my opinion "Shaman" really cures !
Keep recording Carlos !

4.0 out of 5 stars A True Shaman, Dec 15 2003
By
This review is from: Shaman (Audio CD)
While in no way superior to the smash Supernatural, Shaman is a collection of night-life, "drive in your car and reflect on the magic of the world" songs. While the Macy Gray song grates after a while, and the Michelle Branch song can get annoying because of it's sugar pop, songs like "Why Don't You and I" with Chad Krueger (although it could be that singer who reminds me of Nick from BSB but sounds much more amazing) and "Feels Like Fire" with the powerful Dido show the true power of the album. Other favorites are "America" with P.O.D., and "Nothing at All" with Musiq.

I like how this cd not only reflects Carlos Santana's talent, but combines other talents in the mix. The choice of Chad Kroeger on this cd was brilliant and gives everyone a chance to see what talent range Kroeger has, with Santana's help.
