Amazing Dragons, ok actors, bad story.,
By Luke Dickey "a rock and rolling dude!" (Middle Earth) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Reign of Fire (Widescreen) (DVD)
I watched this movie thinking it would be about dragons destroying cities, eating people and fighting armies. Sure not the greatest plot but fun and has lots of dragon action. But that was not what I got.Bad things: The plot was awful. Just when you think it was going to get good [huge dragon comes out of the ground] it skips to like 20 years later. When you think you'll see dragons flying around cities and destroying them and instead you get people sitting around in ruins in a chard landscape you'd be disappointed to. And also from that part on you just get like 3 parts with dragons in them. Boring. Good things: The dragons were cool! They looked very well done and were some of the best movie dragons I've seen. I think that the dragons didn't look to stereotypical or to cartoon-like. Like most others. Also the acting was ok. All in all pretty bad movie. Just see it for the dragons. I would have given this movie one star but the special effects were great so it gets two.

Sigh...What a disappointment,

The whole premise for this movie is cool. The old legends were true--there WERE dragons back in Midieval days. They also killed the dinosaurs, brought on the ice age with their ash, and starved themselves into hibernation. Then one day some engineers dug too deep (as engineers always do in these kinds of movies) and the whole world went to pot. Cool concept, huh? Too bad there wasn't much beyond that. I was ready and rarin' for lots of action, but there was very little, and it was sporadic and not even that great. The plot is okay, not very original, and was pretty entertaining for one viewing. I don't know if I could sit through it again, though. In short, this is one of those movies that looked really cool but proved to be a let-down. My advice? Watch it once (if you like this kind of movie) before you decide to buy. I know I won't be owning this one.

Wasted Opportunity,

This is so typical of misleading hype and false advertising. Awesome posters of dragons burning up London, as Apache Copters engage in intense battle with them. Sounds really great, doesn't it? Well, SURPRISE! None of this is to be found in this dreary disappointer. We begin with a suspenseful, promising opening scene where a dragon is accidentally unearthed in a London excavation site, and escapes. So far, so good. Now for the bad news: The director (for whatever moronic reasons) then cuts to '20 Years Later' - after everything that is worth seeing has already happened. WTF??!!Imagine if something like WAR OF THE WORLDS began with the Martians' arrival, then immediately jumps ahead a few years after all the action and suspense has occured. Bet you'd really love that. I can envision furious audiences storming the box office, demanding their money back - and rightfully so. You just don't pull something as deceptively cheesy as that, and expect any loyalty from your disgruntled audience and ex-fans. RoF skips right past the real story of the dragons' assault on the modern world, and their eventual destruction of civilization. Wouldn't that have made a far greater movie than this tepid dreck, which only has fleeting moments of any real action? Imagine spectacular scenes of cities being devastated by armies of dragons, with modern technologies' desperate fight to try to stop them. And when the scientists learn that they caused the dinosaurs' extinction - and a flashback that SHOWS this. With a decent script and right director, a prequel could really deliver. Just keep Roland Emmerich and all his idiocy far away from it.Otherwise, another vapid wasted opportunity that could have really delivered - if anyone had bothered to care. And the budget was $95,000,000. So don't give me that 'not enough money' cop-out. How about a serious prequel? Or am I 'asking too much' from most of the bozos involved in 'film making' today?

Gerard Butler brings a sensitivity to the movie, as well as the courage and bravory of a "Knight".The movie is for the "thinking man", the bad reviews are not to be considered. This film seems true to life in believe-ability; the dragons could not have been more "real" in looks movements and fire breathing action; in flight they are magnificent! The men are wonderful with the children, in keeping them strong and unafraid in there horrowing situation. They are as men Should be these days, protective of their women and children. The costumes are rustic and real. The movie can be compared to "King Author" in style. A Great action movie, mystical, gritty and Wonder-full.

Many people felt the need to trash this movie just because it didn't have dragons in every scene. While there are better dragon films, Reign of Fire had some good special effects to it. There are a few points of intensity, the violence factor isn't too heavy (otherwise this film would have received an R rating), and the ending seems a bit mediocre but the movie is still worth a look.

This sure seems like it should be a winner, and as someone who enjoyed all the Mad Max movies and who likes Matthew McConaughey and Christian Bale, I was prepared to be thoroughly entertained, but this was a mess that started out well and then deteriorated. Strangely enough, things seemed to grind to a halt when McConaughey's character (Van Zan) enters the picture, so to speak. And who thought it was a good idea to take a good looking guy like McC and turn him into a bald cigar-chomping neanderthal? The dragons were excellent and the sets and design were great, but the script and plot needed work.DVD extras include a trailer, a 12-minute conversation with director Bowman, a 15-minute making-of featurette and an 8-minute sfx featurette. The film can be heard in English or French and subtitled in English or Spanish.

This "Reign of Fire" movie was/is a good movie, but I would like to know is what movie is being shown on the cover of the dvd and the poster? I know for a fact that there was one(1) helicopter in this movie but there are no Apache helicopters in the Reign of Fire movie that I have seen, unless the dvd cover and the poster that was put out for this movie was a mistake and was susposed to be for Reign of Fire 2? Well, if they make a movie that is like dvd cover and the poster then that would be a great dragon versus man movie!

How is it possible to have a movie with the coolest looking fire breathing/man eating dragons in it and still manage to suck? After the novelty of the dragons wears off, this movie loses whatever charm it had and tanks badly. Every dvd of this movie should be gathered up and fed to dragons. Stay away from this picture.

Reign of Fire (Rob Bowman, 2002)Veteran TV director Rob Bowman gives us his third feature film, Reign of Fire. "Stupid" is the first word that comes to mind, but it's stupid in an affectionate, agreeable sort of way. Christian Bale (American Psycho, Shaft) plays the leader of one of the last remaining outposts of humans on earth, which has been devastated by dragons. Yes, dragons. Seems they'd been hibernating for millenia and were awakened by a team drilling a new subway (which just happened to include Bale's character's mom). He and his crowd are just trying to get along in the world, until a band of marauders, headed by Matthew McConaughey, stop in claiming to be dragonslayers. The best parts of the movie feature Bale and McConaughey engaged in a kind of tug-of-war for the loyalty of Bale's compound, while at the same time forming a grudging respect for one another. There is actually very little of this. Much of the rest is either a special effects extravaganza or attempted sexual tension between Bale and ex-Bond Girl Izabella Scorpuco (GoldenEye). Silly and predictable, with great unrealized potential. Still, there are worse ways to turn your brain off for a couple of hours. ** 1/2

Man!!! There's a lot of bashing reviews for this movie. My review is it's a good movie. Why do you think so many people bashed this movie? Well it's because they put there hopes on this movie too high on the pedistal. Yes the movie it sort of short and it doesn't really show hardly of what happened in the past, like the dragons burning down cities and eating people, but it had awesome visuals, great acting and a good story. Mathew played a wicked role and played it great!!! I didn't even think it was him acting because I haven't seen him so taugh.Trust me, there was a lot of work put in this movie. It took two years to finish it. Yes there could have been more dragons and they should of shown more of what happened in the past, but it still turned out great. Out of all the dragans movies out there, this on is on top. GO BUY THE MOVIE |
