5.0 out of 5 stars A great c.d from a great singer!
While I didn't get to watch the first season of American Idol because I live in Canada, I did catch the finale, in which Kelly Clarkson was crowned the first American Idol. Based on the performances of that evening, I fell in love with Kelly's voice, so it was a no-brainer to pick up her debut c.d. Here, I will lay out a track by track review of the album.

3.0 out of 5 stars many boring songs but her voice makes it worthwhile
kelly clarkson's voice is like a little drop of heaven - and I can't believe it came out of a show such as American Idol, but her songs on this album are quite bad - but I absolutely love "Thankful" (10/10). Other okay songs are "The Trouble With Love Is" "Miss Independent" "What's Up Lonely" and "Just Missed The Train"...

1) The Trouble With Love Is: I think this was a good way to start off the album, it's a nice slow ballad that was great to show off Kelly's fantastic voice, she really shines here, she has this power, yet subtleness to her voice htat truely amazes me.
2) Miss Independant: This is a great up-tempo song. I think it was a good song to release for her first single off the album, it's a definate change from "A Moment Like This". You can tell she really means the words, which is always good, because otherwise the song is meaningless. I really like the spunk, and the attitude.
3) Low: Now, this i sone of my faves off the album.I like the slow-rock category for Kelly, if she does pick a genre to tilt her next album towards, it would have to be songs kinda like this, and songs like "You Thought Wrong", her powerhouse duet with fellow Idol finalist. I'll talk about that more later. A great overall song, fantastic!
4) Some Kind of Miracle: Hmmm... Not much comes to mind while thinking of this song other than it's slow, and kind of boring, of course Kelly still sounds fantastic on this song, I just think it drags on a bit.
5) What's Up Lonely: This is a nice up-tempo R&B-ish song, nothing too spectacular coming from this track, but it's "alright".
6) Just Missed The Train: Oooooh! One of my other favourites from this c.d. It's a really neat song, and Kelly uses her voice in such different ways from some other songs, it has a real nice vibe to it, it sounds sort of like something Avril Lavigne would record, but Kelly of course has a good voice, WITHOUT the studio enhancement, so it is much better than anything Avril could do. Top notch song!
7) Beautiful Disaster: This song is kind of forgetful, I never automatically think to skip forwards to this song, yet when I do, I fall in lov ewith the song, it's very good, love it!
8) You Thought Wrong: Yes, it's finally here, Kelly Clarkson and Tamyra Gray, two HUGE voices in one GREAT song! I can't believe how cool this song sounds, i thought they would do a ballad or something, which I would have been happy with, but no, they surprised me (pleasently, I must add). With a terrific, up-tempo song. Great!
9) Thankful: This is a nic, bubbly song. While Kelly covers no new ground here, it is a fun listen. Everytime I listen to this, I feel happy, it's just a really nice song to hear, with a great message.
10) Anytime: The song she first sang on American Idol 2. It blew me aways then, and it does the same now, it's a trerific song, sung fantastically by Kelly. What range and power! I love this song!
11) A Moment Like This: This was her first single, and the song that made me a fan, from the finale of American Idol. I loved it (on her voice) then, and I still love it, it shows off her voice very nicely. Job well done, although i can't see how this is a "new mix".
12) Before Your Love: However much I like "A Moment Like This", I can't hel pbut LOVE this song more, it really shows off her power, and has good lyrics, good-good!

If you can't tell, I'm a fan, and this album, impressed, greatly. This is a must-have for Idol fans, and just fans of great singers, and believe me when I say she is one! great album!

4.0 out of 5 stars Thoughts on Thankful..., May 21 2003

I believe this CD is very good in many ways, and bad in others. One thing I did like about the CD is that it showed Kelly's whole vocal range. However, I did not like how some of the songs sounded alike. This CD is very much a blues CD, with the exception of Miss Independent and You Thought Wrong featuring Tamyra Gray. There are also some alternative songs, such as Beautiful Disaster. And of course, with every young girl singer, there are going to be some pop songs. However, these songs are slow, and I love them!

Almost every song on this album is incredible. Kelly Clarkson shows off her versatility and vocal range. Not many artist can pull off the variety of sound that's on this CD. You can find anything from Rock, Up-Tempo, Blue's, R&B, & Love Ballads. I highly recommend it!

This Girl can 'Saang'! If kelly didnt win AI there would have been something going wrong in America! I ordered this CD as soon as it was released & it is everything i expected and more.
Amazing voice, Great songs.

The trouble with love is - Perfect warming introduction, Good to chill out to

Miss independent - Good choice of first single, this song will attract the younger age group, clever lyrics. I just wanna jump up and down as soon as i hit the chorus!

Low - Indie touch to it, i like this style, i think alot of people can relate themselves to these lyrics!

Some kind of miracle - Love the beat to this, sounds soulful and kelly's voice is so angelic!

whats up lonely - also love the beat to this, one of my favouirte tracks, makes you wanna sit back & relax

just missed the train - another favourite, reminds me of a song that would be included on Dawsons creek or a boy meet girl love flick! Love it

beautiful disaster - i think this should be 3rd single. This song reminds me of summer. A feel good song. Makes me wanna sing along everytime! Her voice sounds exceptional here.

You thought wrong - The track i least listen to. Reminds me of something whitney houston would sing.

Thankful - Kelly really shows off her voice through this song. Chill out song, kind of need it with the best 3 songs of the album to follow it!

Anytime - MY overall favourite track on the cd. A powerful ballad which has to be the next single! Too good not to be! Its one of those songs that really does something to you when hearing it! This song is kelly clarkson!

Thankful has something for everyone, kelly can fit to any style of music and make it look easy! Her voice can suit any song.

2.0 out of 5 stars Kelly Clarkson Doubtlessly Have So Much Things To Be Thankful For, Jun 1 2008

Here is another mini-Alanis, but she also seems to have an edge that is common in Madonna. After all, she chose to sing "Express Yourself" rather than, say, "I Will Always Love You".

Album Cover: 3.5/5
Kelly doesn't really come off as sexy, but she looks pretty good. Her hair has changed a lot, and it looks a bit disgusting. Not the best cover ever, but certainly not the worst. (Mariah's "Emotions" comes to mind."

1. The Trouble With Love Is: 4/5
This is a pretty decent song with a catchy chorus and verses. Absolutely love the lyrics, and Kelly's girl growl adds a little something more.

2. Miss Independent: 4.5/5
This is a really great rock song with lots of words that start with "mis" or ends with "ent".

3. Low: 3/5
This is an okay song about a betrayal. It is just... okay. I kind of love it, but... it just doesn't blow me away.

4. Some Kind Of Miracle: 1/5
BLAH!

5. What's Up Lonely: 2/5
Just barely listenable.

6. Just Missed The Train: 2.5/5
It's getting better, but still not good enough.

7. Beautiful Disaster: 2.5/5
I am still alive and the song is passable.

8. You Thought Wrong: 1/5
No. Just... no!

9. Thankful: 1.5/5
I am not feeling thankful that I listened to this song AT ALL!

10. Anytime: 1/5
YAWN!

11. A Moment Like This: 4.5/5
I really love this song! People say it's too Adult Contemporary, but I absolutely LOVE it.

12. Before Your Love: 1/5
Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

Overall Rating: 2/5

Since its release, this has sold over 4,000,000 copies worldwide.

4.0 out of 5 stars Thankful = solid debut, Mar 8 2006

I love Kelly Clarkson!! I must admit that I was not a huge fan when I first bought this CD. But since her second album came out and blew me away, I gave this one another chance and have fallen in love with it. It's not nearly as great as 'Breakaway' but as a debut album, it's more than decent. It's a solid effort and Kelly's voice is amazing, as usual!

5.0 out of 5 stars Thankful for "Thankful", Jun 2 2005
This review is from: Thankful (Audio CD)
I love Kelly's first CD! I love the positivity that's somehow lacking in her second one and a lot of CDs by other female pop stars. She's the first American Idol and she will always be THE American Idol for me. Way to go, Kelly Brianne Clarkson!

This is, in all honesty, my favorite CD of all time. Kelly has the most beautiful voice of any other female singer I have evr heard, and her fame is success is well-deserved. All I can say to anyone who is reading this, BUY THIS CD! I guarantee you won't be disappointed. Many of the songs that haven't even made fame yet are excellent. "Just Missed The Train" and "Beautiful Disaster" are fantastic, along with all her other songs that have been released as singles. This CD is highly recommended to anyone who appreciates marvelous songs with awesome vocals.

I never watched American Idol until mid way this season to watch Diana DeGarmo, but I do have to say that I bought this cd along with Ruben's and then Clay's. I love it ! Kelly has a knock em dead voice that she can make whatever she wants whenever she wants it. I like the fact that her pitch changes a lot, this makes the songs energetic, and exciting. I love the fast songs and I love the sad songs as well, to me its like she relates to you personally and to me thats a real singer... Great album! I can't wait for second one - Ive heard Breakaway, so I can't wait for that to be released too...
