4.0 out of 5 stars This is the Cary Grant I will always remember!
The films of the 30s and 40s with Cary Grant saw a film actor on the rise and his final ascension into superstardom. Some prefer his 50s and onward persona of suave and sophistication. While I liked the on screen Grant of that era too it is this time period I believe that shows Grant at his best. Here was an actor with great energy, charm, charisma and an understated depth and...

3.0 out of 5 stars Awfully good movie - awfully bad dvd transfer
The Awful Truth is a great movie with Irene Dunn stealing the show from a still great Cary Grant. My big disappointment was with the quality of the transfer to DVD. I never thought the VHS was too good from the standpoint of picture and audio quality, and the DVD is a big improvement, but come on guys. Is that the best master tape you could make the transfer from. The...

The films of the 30s and 40s with Cary Grant saw a film actor on the rise and his final ascension into superstardom. Some prefer his 50s and onward persona of suave and sophistication. While I liked the on screen Grant of that era too it is this time period I believe that shows Grant at his best. Here was an actor with great energy, charm, charisma and an understated depth and range in his acting. This collection from Columbia is a great showcase for Grant and a must have for all of his fans.
There are five films included here;Holiday,Only Angels Have Wings,The Talk of the Town,His Girl Friday and The Awful Truth.
All are top notch and delightful films in their own rights and have strong leading ladies for Grant to play with.
Holiday is a film which I have not seen for some 35 years and it was a welcome sight. But as others have noted before me it is not available as a seperate release, and I can see why the film execs have NOT picked it as such;it ranges from good condition to poor. This film has been restored through UCLA using material from their archives,Columbia and The Library of Congress. And when one has to get elements from three seperate sources, the alarm bells go off in my head.
To start with from the opening credits to a good 15 minutes into the film, the picture seems slighly cropped, that is to say, we seem to be looking closer at everything than we should.Heads are precariously close to the top of the frame.Compare this to the other films and you'll see what I mean. Also there is a scene where Hepburn meets Cary's friends.I got the impression the friends got a little too cosy with her a little too quickly than they should have, possibly as a result of some slight footage being left out. When you have to get your build elements from three different sources then the odds are a)neither source has a complete print(or a decent working one) and b)some film may be left out/lost.But this is only my impressions/oppinions.
Most of the other films are generally in very good condition, some a little more grainy than others but good nonetheless. If I was to rate them all from the best to the worst,as far as condition goes,I would put Only Angels Have Wings and The Talk of Town in a two way tie for first,His Girl Friday and The Awful Truth in a two way tie for second and Holiday as a more distant third.
As I mentioned previously Grant's range can not be stated enough. He plays everything from a husband going through a divorce,a jungle pilot,a newspaper editor,a disenchanted husband to be and an innocent criminal on the lamb. All are embued with Grant's ineffable charm and charisma and the humour that plays out in each film is of a quite human and realistic nature. It is the latter that helps draw the viewer into the film and makes them care about the characters much more than they otherwise would. Two of the directors Leo McCary and George Stevens(The Awful Truth and The Talk of the Town respectively)are directly descended from working very closely with Laurel and Hardy. That type of humanistic, realistic, gentle and very funny humour is evident throughout those films especially. And no matter where the plots go,and some get pretty serious at times, they always in the end stay the steady course knowing in the end Grant's character will end on a little higher note than he began.
This set of five DVDS comes in a big slipcase with fold out holders. You will have no complaints as to the discs coming loose. In fact I have to say if anything these discs are a little TOO tight(I thought I'd never say that!).I had a devil of a time trying to get them out.
Each DVD has one or two short featurettes on its' pertinent film but nothing much else worthy of note. There are a nice set of 10 cards included;five lobby repros and five pub pics;very nice.
In conclusion, most of the films have been transferred well with Holiday having the worst number of deficiencies,as noted. But for all you Cary Grant fans and lovers of good films, these are five must haves ready and waiting for you all in one place.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Awful Truth: It's great!, Aug 28 2006
By
Canuckfcuk (Toronto, Canada) - See all my reviews
Three classic Grant films: 'Holiday', 'The Awful Truth' and 'His Girl Friday', all in one boxset, is worth the price alone. Along with "Wings" and "Town" this is a great boxset for Cary grants; especially since "Holiday" is not available on DVD anywhere else! The quality is alright (better than watching it some late night on some obscure TV channel). It would've been better if they included "Philideliphia Story" and "Arsenic and Oldlace" instead of 'Wings' and 'Town'; but, that would've been an embarrassment of riches. Get this! You wont be dissappointed. x

4.0 out of 5 stars Decent movie, Bad release., May 28 2004

This review is from: The Awful Truth (DVD)
Cary Grant and Irene Dunne star in this very funny Screwball comedy directed by Leo McCarey who won the oscar for Best Director. The film was released in 1937 and was nominated for 6 Academy Awards.

The story of it is basically, Jerry and Lucy (Cary Grant and Irene Dunne) are a married couple who decide to get a divorce, since they both suspect they are cheating. Lucy finds herself getting engaged to a rich millionaire, named Daniel (Ralph Bellamy, in yet another great role). Jerry and Lucy even try to decide in a court, who is going to get custody over their dog, Mr Smith (Yes, the dog!). Lucy wins, while Jerry gets visiting rights, to see Mr. Smith. This keeps the two seeing each other, and you can guess how it turns out in the end.

The movie is very fast moving, extremely funny, and you will see why it was so successful on its release.

The print on this DVD is not really very good and the sound is not great either, (You might like to compare it to Columbia's other poor effort for the DVD of 'Holiday') but it is worth buying and still very watchable, I am not trying to say it isn't. They just could have done better with it. It has a total lack of extras also.

Even though it has a slightly poor release that could have been a lot better, I would still recommend this brilliant film which I am sure anybody will enjoy.

PLEASE NOTE: I own the Region 2 release, which, appears to be no different to this anyways. The comparison to the bad print on the DVD of 'Holiday', also refers to the Region 2 release.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nothing awful about the Awful Truth, April 30 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: The Awful Truth (DVD)
In 1937 Cary Grant was already a Hollywood Giant... a dynamic actor and a genuine Star. But in the "Awful Truth," Irene Dunn took him to school. Yes, Mr. Grant was as charismatic as usual, delivering his lines marvelously, perfect in comedic timing, and demonstrating great physical humor. Throughout most of the movie, Grant and Dunne sparred on relatively equal terms, each earning a fair share of the proliferus laughter generated by their antics. However, at the last hearty chuckle, it was clear that Dunne had been toying with Grant throughout. No, this is not a spoiler and has nothing to do with the storyline, but rather an evaluation of their performances. Despite the magnificence of his, her's was better.

Irene Dunne was simply phenomenal, deserving her nomination for "Best Actress." She was funny, charming, exuberant, conniving, manipulative, and intriguing. The movie was slow to find it's footing and much time was wasted as Grant and Dunn, in the slower portions, are not on camera together and thus unable to "duel." But as the plot unfolds the momentum builds to a final crescendo and the mutual magic of these fine comedic artists delivers cascade upon cascade of laughter.

The director Lee McCarey, earning his Best Director Oscar, toyed with both the relatively new "Hayes Code" and the censors, implying with sensitivity and subtlety, a physical aspect of love and infatuation that was unnecessarily suppressed in movies for decades. The witty "doublespeak" dialog at the end was fascinating as each of these protagonists explained the situation in self-contradictory fashions and yet their meanings were unmistakable. Yes, there is a predictable plot but the witty words and scrappy schemes are pleasant surprises.

The back of the DVD states "Digitally mastered audio and video", and "Mastered in High Definition", whatever that means. It's still a great movie, but we admirers of old black and whites sure to get played for suckers with some of these old classics.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cary Grant - A Very Intelligent Leading Man!, Feb 6 2013
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This collection of 5 of Grant's early movies showcase both his wit and his intelligence in all of these leading man roles. He goes from a strong leader, with sensitivity in "Only Angels Have Wings" to a fast talking newspaper editor with an eye on the headlines in "His Girl Friday". Just buy this and enjoy!

This is one of the best screwball comedies, but Columbia has released an awful print of the film. There are even frames missing from the DVD. Not only does Columbia overcharge for their products, but they release hideous looking prints. The VHS video is better quality than this DVD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Why can't they make comedies like this any more?, Nov 8 2011

This review is from: The Awful Truth (DVD)
This is a hilarious movie if you like the clever and sophisticated comedy style that was popular from the mid-30's to mid-40's. Cary Grant is, like most of the classic leading men, much more enjoyable than when he later became a cliche of himself. And Irene Dunn is amazingly, unselfconsciously funny. A great movie to watch when you want a lift.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sheer Entertainment, July 6 2004
This review is from: The Awful Truth (DVD)
One of several tremendously fun screwball comedies Grant made in the relatively early part of his career. In actuality, he had already been in nearly 30 movies before he made this one. In 1932, his debut year, he was in seven movies. He was in six in '33 and so on. I guess the idea was to be in as many movies as possible in hopes something would get noticed. Also, under the studio system, inexperienced or not particularly in demand actors were at the studio's mercy and the studio could work them to death if they felt like it. Only fame gave an actor enough power to call his own shots. That Grant was paired with Dunne is a happy coincidence. Their timing and chemistry are perfect. Talent makes all the difference. Dunne was more famous and accomplished at the time. She had already been nominated for an Academy Award for Cimarron. Grant was still perfecting his witty, offhand, debonair and slightly amoral screen persona. He had been in She Done Him Wrong w/ Mae West and that got him on the map but the late 30's were his breakout period with Topper and The Awful Truth.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good!, Nov 22 2003
This review is from: The Awful Truth (DVD)
I think The Awful Truth is a good movie and I would add the DVD to my collection but to be honest I enjoyed My Favorite Wife better. Now I'm not putting The Awful Truth down, I liked it but just not as much as My Favorite Wife. If you like snappy witty dialogue than you will probably like this movie. I recommend it!
