3.0 out of 5 stars Another 80's Movie
This is another John Cusack movie from the 1980's. It is not his best, but is still an entertaining movie for all those kids who have had the summer jobs and have wracked up hours of daydreaming. This movie has funny animations like that of Better Off Dead, another John Cusack 80's movie. Nonetheless, I give this movie three stars.

If I had to list my top 20 favorite comedies, this would have to be in that list somewhere. Lighthearted and funny, and the DVD contains a commentary track that had me laughing throughout. If you like this one, check out "Better Off Dead", also by Savage Steve Holland and starring John Cusack.

Holy cow, do I love this movie. "Look! The craziness!"

This is one of those movies that played endlessly on HBO, and I remembered it quite fondly. One day I threw it in the VCR and surprised myself by laughing almost nonstop through the whole thing.

Sure, it seems a cookie-cutter comedy from the eighties, and it is, but look! the craziness!

The brilliance of the movie is how it's situations keep slowly escalating into pure comic insanity. Sure everybody remembers Bobcat Goldthwait rampaging in a Godzilla costume, but the seeds for the scene were presented about fifteen minutes ago and there was an uninterrupted continuity that took us from there to here. This is pretty amazing for a "cookie-cutter" comedy.

Really, it's this sense of mayhem that keeps bringing me back to the movie. Mayhem. That's what I want out of comedies, and this is one of its epitomes. This and GREMLINS 2.

But who cares about that? This movie brings the funny. What more could you ask for? No thanks to all the cute and fuzzy bunnies in the world.

1.0 out of 5 stars just another dumb preppie vs. nerd movie, April 17 2003

This movie has been done over and over again, with different actors and by different directors, but the plot is stale and has gotten extremely boring. Don't bother with another cookie cutter movie of this kind.... buy something original or save your money!

5.0 out of 5 stars More Surreal Comedy From Savage Steve Holland, April 2 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: One Crazy Summer (DVD)
This is what 80's movies were all about, having fun. John Cusack returns this time as Hoops McCann, a character much like Lane Meyer from Better Off Dead. The dark surreal humor from Better Off Dead is all over this movie, and with the addition of all these quirky characters like Bobcat Goldthwait, this is a movie you won't easily forget. Sure, some of the gags are a little corny, but most of the humor works since it is so off-the-wall and/or ridiculous. I sure wish Savage Steve Holland had continued making movies like this.

The DVD is actually decent. The video is quite good in a lot of scenes, but scenery shots and miscellaneous other scenes are grainy. In that sense the video is sort of a mixed bag, but it looks way better than any previous version. The colors are nice, but the picture is a tad soft. This shouldn't distract you though, it still looks impressive for an 80's movie. The audio is a bit of a setback as it is only single channel mono. It sounds good for what it is, but since it only comes out of the center channel speaker, it ends up sounding dull. Why not make the mono mix 2 channel? That way we could at least get some separation. The trailer is included on the dvd as expected, but I was shocked to see a commentary with Savage Steve Holland, Curtis Armstrong, and Bobcat Goldthwait! I wasn't expecting much, but man this is a funny commentary. If you're the type who normally skips commentaries, don't miss this one. So the dvd is light on the features, but at least it got better treatment than Paramount gave Better Off Dead.

4.0 out of 5 stars What happened to Savage Steve Holland?, Feb 25 2003

I enjoyed this film more than Better Off Dead. It has a peculiar logic not seen in John Hughes' teen comedies.John Cusak wallowing in his "artistic self misery" is taken to Nantucket island for a holiday. Here he meets the Stork twins (Bobcat Goldthwaite and his identical(?) 6'4" twin) and the evil supercilious A+ crowd. Scattered throughout a fairly predictable plot of coming-of-age wisdom and redemption are truly insane characters and moments. I could watch this film over and over savouring the loopy characters, animation breaks and the ridiculous situations - the mechanical giant dolphin with rabies, Ack Ack's power crazy scoutmaster Dad, Uncle listening to the radio waiting to win money and his final revenge and the dangerously unpredictable Stork twin Egg.Cusak is delightfully restrained and uncomfortable in these situations. Demi Moore is bland as a hippy folk singer.

This is a film that is more than a sum of its parts and if you think 16 candles was the best Hughes movie watch this picture. It's left field but it's worth it.

This was Savage Steve Holland's follow up film to the cult classic better off dead... he had big shoes to fill and boy did he ever make another winner! Starring John Cussack, Demi Moore and Bobcat Goldthwait this movie is a laugh fest with some very nice touching moments in between! Even after all these years this movie still makes me laugh out loud! I can't recommend it enough to you all!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good eighties flick!, Aug 25 2001
This review is from: One Crazy Summer (VHS Tape)
I've recently rented this and Better Off Dead, and this is my favorite of the two (which should be seen together). It's funny, and a great geeks-beat-the-cool-guy movie. There are really cool animation shorts, Demi Moore sings (if that's actually her voice) and it's also got Bobcat Golthplait and Jeremy Piven as a preppy jerk. I laughed out loud. My favorite scenes were the one where the preppy bullies make a human basketball hoop out of one of Cusack's friends and when Bobcat Golthplait gets stuck in a Godzilla costume and crashes a party. Definately worth viewing.

Here's something I guarantee you will never see on a film festival marquee: "Tonight:Savage Steve Holland: An Auteur's Retrospective". Okay--maybe...in France. Alright--most likely... at an Eighties Theme Party. "One Crazy Summer" is another typically silly yet likeable 80's cinematic slopfest of the "Caddyshack" variety.A young John Cusack plays the mostly reactive Bill Murray character here, wryly observing the "wacky" behavior (and shameless camera mugging) of various 80's niteclub comics like Bobcat Goldthwaite, Taylor Negron and Rich Hall. Demi Moore gives an appealing performance, actually showing more acting promise at this stage of her career(before she started to take herself too seriously).Unintentional laughs abound during some sloppy lip-synching scenes where Demi, wearing her folk singer duds and strumming her acoustic guitar, somehow sounds more like a rockin' Pat Benatar (and gets an electric guitar sound out of that acoustic!)Good mindless fun.
