not really a single duff track here,

Wow! What a debut! From the start with "Attack of the Ghost Riders" the sound hits you like a freight train. A cross between the Jesus and the Mary Chain and every punk/pop band you've ever heard and that only half explains the Raveonettes. The use of sirens on "Cops On Our Tail" also mirrors the best of rap songs that do this but the bonus is there is an actual tune on here. Definitely pick this up no matter the price.

This is what indie is all about,

This is indie and direct. There is some repetition but haven't you heard of serial music or techno? Less is more with The Raveonettes. Plus they look like a real band. They look cooler than 905 of the bands out there. I can't take bands serious when they come out in t-shirt and jeans. This record is a daring experiement. If people don't get it, that's their fault. Every song is hit on this CD.

Terrific and short debut from Danish band,

This EP is repetitive and sounds llke it was recorded in a tunnel somewhere. However, the low-fi nature of the album works in it's favor because all of the songs are written in a minor key making this album a noisy, short, depressing ( in a fun way), experience. It's pretty good and reminds you of bands like Sonic Youth who don't mind using fuzz guitar.

wow. this whole album sounds the same through every song.monotonous doesn't even begin to describe the unchanging and anoying structure of every single song. i just saw them live opening for the strokes. every song is "sung" in a monotone boring drone and EVERY song they played live sounded exactly the same. they are the type of band that gives garage rock a bad name.

Lot's of trippy guitar fuzz. Wipe out!,

Be prepared for a whirlwind spliff-induced stupor. The Raveonettes are much in the same vein as The Warlocks or Black Rebel Motorcycle Club of reviving tripped-out guitar-distorted late 60's psychadelia. The Jesus and Mary Chain comparisions seem to constantly pop-up to describe these trippy-snare-pounding-guitar-fuzz-thrash bands, and 'Whip It On' is no different. The vocals have this ominious Clientele-like drone, a twinge of slick 50's rebelliousness (just think Rumble by Link Wray on speed) and even a bit of XTRMNTR by Primal Scream. Listening to this CD, you can sense the free-wheeling danger, and if you concentrate hard enough, you'll be able to smell the leather jackets and motorcycle diesel in the air.

Distorted punk-pop-rock, with an eerie 50s-style cover and a small number of short, hard-hitting songs. Either it's a pretentious waste, or a glimpse of future excellent music -- for the Raveonettes' "Whip It On," it's a little hard to tell just what it is. But it seems that it's going to be the latter.Starting with a piercing electronic screech, "Attack of the Ghost Riders" is a steady track, followed by the more flowing "Veronica Fever," the siren-filled "Cops on Our Tail," the heavy-thumping "Do You Believe Her," the rocking "My Tornado" with its haunting whispers, and a few others. Comparisons to the White Stripes may be the wrong thing to listen to; the Raveonettes sound quite different from the Stripes. They don't have the flexibility or versatility; the songs are a lot more monotonous musically, as many of them seem alike when you first listen. On the second or third round, the differences start to pop out. It's also very short -- only eight songs, and most of them are about three minutes or less. Despite this, the music is fairly raw and dark, but broodingly danceable. The distorted, slightly distant vocals seem to blend in with the whirling guitar feedback. And the songwriting has the same dark quality as the music, sometimes well-written and sometimes just repetitive. ("Delinquent girl/and all her angels on death row") The words dwell on darkness, crime, Vegas lights, and catching rays off the sun. The Raveonettes may be the next big thing, or they may not. "Whip It On" is a nice diversion but gives only some hints of what may be ahead for the Danish duo. A nice (if short) listen.

unusually amusing & vibrant retro-rock,
This review is from: Whip It On (Audio CD)
Hilarious. I mean that in a good way. These guys know how to craft tunes, with attitude. And what can I say? I love Bminor, and the whole CD is recorded in it. If you want a SOLID, hard-rockin` 60s-without-the-kitsch, ULTIMATE REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE soundtrack (LOL), this is it. And the caricature is solidly supported with structural aesthetics that make it sound flawless (as a capitulation for the style). Now, granted, the vibe that "Whip It On" offers is a bit skewed from my usual persona; however, for something refreshingly "different" this is smack VERY, very well done.(FYI, I sampled their full-length, B-major follow-up but didn't care for the surprisingly syrupy bits I heard.) - hyperbolic squiggly, dressed up in the black skins & studded angles

Many say that B.R.M.C. sound like Jesus and Mary Chain, which really isn't true at all, they are more like the Verve with more shoegazing. The J&MC comparisions are much much more true with the raveonettes, who sound so close to J&MC it's kinda scary, but maybe that's not a bad thing, since the first and best J&MC cd 'Psychocandy' is only avalilible on import we need something to listen untill Pyschocandy becomes availible for less that 25 dollars.Despite that the Raveonettes do carve their own niche with the duo vocals and short odes to sex and police chases, and the Raveonettes are getting even more their own sound with currnt release "Chain Gang of Love", but this is a great start, and I suggest it for anyone who likes J&MC, and don't mind a little too much similarity.

Maybe the Raveonettes' 8-track first offering won't change the world of pop and rock music yet one thing is certain : it is undeniably one of the most enjoyable , powerful debut albums of the last few years . Sune Rose Wagner and Sarin Foo pen some first-class tunes here like " Do You Believe Her " , the psychedelic " My Tornado " and ofcourse " Attack Of The Ghost Riders " in which " ... the strippers go insane " . They perfom their sweet-noise , gripping melodies with these impersonal , sexy vocals of theirs which are being perfectly combined with their frosty and strangely addictive image . Cool and certainlty interesting , " Whip It On " should be on the top of your must-buy list of records .
