If you need the facts go read a book !, Avril 20 2004
This is all out WWII action ! If you have a T.V. bigger than 19 inches plugged into surround sound with a much needed subwoofer you will not be disapointed ! Go read a book if you need factual events. First Cage film I have liked. Now go see, "WHEN TRUMPETS FADE". Don't forget the home theater!

This film is good, Déc 22 2003
I missed "Windtalkers" in the theatres, but I bought the DVD when it came out. First off, if you like WWII films, you will love this one. Second, I can understand how some people could say it lacks in story. This is meant for action fans, and war film fans. It was NOT meant for the art house people that would rather sit through some French romance film. This is meant to excite, and cash in on the wave of post 9-11 war films. Like a good John Wayne film, it was meant to be a good John Wayne type action film. It wasn't meant to replace "Gone With The Wind". Afther I owned the DVD for a while, I decided to buy the director's cut edition. It adds to the film, and really makes it more complete, because the original cut of the film left out some details in the story(like the romance between Cage and the nurse). Check it out, but don't look for "Citizen Kane". You won't find it here.

directors cut is great, Nov. 14 2003
I saw the theatrical version and thought it was a cool action flick, but not enough was said about the code talkers. Then I upgraded to the directors cut and it now ranks high in my favorites list. The opening fight sequence is longer and nastier, there is a little more info on the code talkers, but best of all a key scene between cage and frances o'conner that leads to a much better ending and a narration explains if he ever returned her letters she wrote to him.The twenty five minutes that are put back in help this story so much its worth checking out, even if you only rent it.

Absolutely great!, Oct. 20 2003
I have to say, this movie really is absolutely great! The battle scenes, the emotions, the characters, they all tie in together extremely well! This movie really displays a realistic perspective of war. What else can I say? If you have seen Face/Off and Mission: Impossible 2, you should definitely see this movie! For those of you who hate Windtalkers, you're nuts!! This movie is awesome and thrilling in every aspect! Some people may erroneously think that Windtalkers should have been about the importance of the Navajo code and how it helped the U.S. achieve victory in major Pacific battles, why is probably why they may not like the movie as much. Windtalkers isn't necessarily about the Navajo code, it's more or less about the importance of friendship and the immorality of war. Some people may say that Windtalkers doesn't have a plot, that it's just fighting and talking. You don't see the plot in the movie, because it's not about one or more people trying to accomplish a certain physical task (like Tears of the Sun or Saving Private Ryan). It is more related to inner conflict. The plot, instead, is how Joe Enders (Nicolas Cage's character) tries to cope with his new assignment as guarding Navajo codetalker Ben Yahzee (Adam Beach's character) and killing him if Yahzee is about to be captured. At first, Enders tries to stay apart from Yahzee to avoid being friends, but as time passes by, he finds himself drawing closer and closer to Yahzee and eventually befriends him. Enders ultimately sees Yahzee's true character and finds himself unable to kill him if capture is imminent. Enders would, instead, decide to save his life. All other events in the movie, including the beginning where Enders loses all of his men, influence Ender's conflicting thoughts and emotions. I won't spoil the ending for you if you haven't seen it yet, but you will be emotionally drawn to the movie when you see it.

A MOVIE WORTH REMEMBERING! A DVD WORTH COLLECTING!, Jui 11 2003
"Windtalkers" is another great WWII epic that depicts a little known and seldom-told story of the war: the Navajo Code Talkers. The film did not deserve the bashing it received by critics. One of the reasons it was bashed was because the film was a bit uneven in the editing. It jumped too much in some areas. But that has been cleared up thanks to John Woo's impressive "Director's Edition" of the film. The 134 Minute film has been extended to 153 Minutes, and is much more exciting and balanced in editing and emotion. This just proves that war films work better at a running time in excession of 150 Minutes! As for the DVD, it is incredible. Disc two features a documentary on the real Navajo Code Talkers as well as a Tribute that will have anyone tearing up. As for the rest, pure entertainment (Warning: the Special Features are almost 100% identical to the ones found on the "Pearl Harbor" Vista Series Director's Cut DVD, but this does not take away anything at all)! A must-own DVD!!!! Movie Grade: A+ DVD Grade: A+

You're all just too critical, Nov. 17 2002
Ok, so it delivered a lot less than it promised by the title; and yes it did have poor character development but your missing the big picture. This movie is NOT supposed to be about the codetalkers, its about Ben Yahzee and Joe Enders. Nicholas Cage deserves an academy award for his shockingly emotional performance, and John Woo did make the fighting more gritty and realistic than anyone thought he could so stop whining that this wasn't a boring historical drama about a group of people no even knows about and look at this movie in a different light.

Take this movie for what it is and you won't be disappointed, Oct. 30 2002
I loved this movie for what it was. Some of the reviews I read seemed to expect too much from this movie. Sure it was a war movie. Sure it wasn't totally historically accurate. Sure it had some cliches. But let's be honest; not every war movie is historically accurate. A lot of war movies focus more on drama and the soldiers' lives. This one didn't. This was an action epic, and I liked that. While movies like Saving Private Ryan and Braveheart focused on acting, this one focused on action. Both are good. John Woo did a good job, and Nicolas Cage's acting was fine. In fact it was really good, since it convinced some reviewers that Nicolas Cage was actually that dull of a person. But he had to act that way to portray the character, which made the movie even better. So, all in all this movie wasn't the best war movie ever made, but it served it's purpose as an entertaining action movie for fans of the genre.

"Windtalkers", Oct. 28 2002
Windtalker's, in my opinion, is one of the best World War II Movies to come out in several years. I'm not normally a big Nicholas Cage fan; however, he does an absolutely wonderful job in this movie. This film also does a wonderful job of showing exactly what the US Marine Corps is supposed to be used for and how a beach landing is performed. The premise: In the beginning of the movie we see Nicholas Cage's character in charge of his squad, their surrounded and being over run by the Japanese. From that amazing scene we're taken to Hawaii where he's recovering, and then gets the assignment to guard the "Windtalker." From there, we're taken back to the war in the Pacific. What follows is an excellent and sometimes gut wrenching story about a Marine who has an extremely tough job to do and the internal conflict he has about that mission. As I said before, this is certainly one of the best World War II movies to come out in some time and it's certainly the best one about the war in the Pacific in a great many years. The SPOILER paragraphs. I've noticed that some of the other reviewers stated that they didn't understand what this movie was about. They also said that it was nothing but blood, guts and just a lot of killing. With all due respect to those reviewers, I'm not exactly sure what you expected when you sat down to watch this movie then, because blood, guts, gore and senseless killing is what war is all about, quite unfortunately. For those that didn't understand what this movie was about; maybe you have to be in or have been in the military to understand this one, I'm not sure. First and foremost, the movie is about the suffering that Nicholas Cage's character goes through after his entire squad is killed and he's seriously injured. As the squad leader who ended up in charge, he feels responsible for the death of his men and that he is the only one that survived. He obviously has the whole gamut of emotions to go with it, to include a healthy portion of rage. He take's that rage with him to Saipan and unleashes it on the Japanese there and in the same sense, becomes a heroic Marine, doing things that most people get killed quickly for. While suffering the emotional spectrum of his earlier combat experience, he's given the mission to protect the code. The ideological thing to pay attention to here is, that it's the code he's assigned to protect, not specifically the bearer of that code. That in and of itself is the inner turmoil that makes this movie and the character the winner that it is. As a human, he has the ethical upbringing that is telling him that he shouldn't kill a fellow American, no matter what. As a Marine though, he has the training that, by military law is supposed to supercede his ethical upbringing. When he does actually have to kill one of them, pay attention to the fact that he doesn't care if he dies now. This is an extremely emotional and gut wrenching movie that very clearly tells its story. Nicholas Cage should at the very least, earn an Oscar nomination if not the award for his work on this film.

A True Masterpiece, Oct. 27 2002
Par Un client
I just bought "Windtalker" and I think it is one of the best war movies to come out of Hollywood. I love war movies and my personal favoret is "Platoon" with Charlie Sheen and William Daefoe but "Windtalkers" is up there with it. Cage is one of the best actors to date and deservese a award of some type for his performance. Marines should love this movie. SEMPER FI.
