5.0 out of 5 stars A lot of fun for a cheap price!, Mar 19 2005
By A Customer
This review is from: Hercules:Journeys S1 (DVD)
I was so happy to see that the price for season one of Hercules the Legendary Journeys had been reduced from a whopping $100 to a reasonable $42. I have wanted to order this show for a long time, but was too cheap to do so. With the new price, I ordered my own copy immediately!

Having only watched bits and pieces of seasons five and six (which ended just as I was getting into it) I was unsure if I would enjoy the "beginnings". Typically, the first season of any show is it's roughest. However, being a huge fan of Xena The Warrior Princess and the cast of characters on that show (Salmoneus, Autolycus, Ares), I could not pass up the opportunity to watch a similar show that would allow me to enjoy those same characters for awhile longer.

I was pleasantly surprised with the collection. Granted, the acting, effects and storylines will improve as the series progresses, but any viewer can see how much potential this series has! And frankly, for the time, the effects are pretty good! Kevin Sorbo really brings Hercules to life, something that no actor has done successfully in the past. Michael Hurst does an equally amazing job as Iolaus, Hercules' often forgotten side kick. Rounding out the cast for the first season, are Salmoneus - the travelling salesman who steals every scene that he is in! and a very young Xena (who obviously had not been fleshed out yet, compared to the first season of her own show). Ares, at this point, was not fully developed and only appeared within other people's bodies or through creepy voice overs. Kevin Smith's absence was definitely felt in the first season!

The five full length movies that are provided in the collection provide insight into Hercules past life and why he is now on his "journeys". The first movie, Hercules and the Amazonian Women, is relatively forgettable. The acting is awful, the effects are pretty bad and they have stuck poor Lucy Lawless in the role of an amazon warrior. Roma Downey is the head of the amazon warriors and rather bad at it. Forgive the collection this one movie. The next three movies are excellent, Hercules and the Circle of Fire being my favourite, with the perfect blend of suspense, humour and campiness that is expected from this series. The last movie was a bit of a bust, in my mind, as 1/3 of it's time was spent showing flashbacks to the first four movies! Hello? I just watched them! Ai yi yi...

After the five movies, the viewer is then treated to the first 13 episodes of the Hercules and the Legendary Series which comprises the first season. These are good episodes, but not as great as the future seasons because they are still developing who and what they really are.

I was a bit disappointed with the Xena trilogy, only because, as I said before, the character was not fully fleshed out, and Xena the Warrior Princess on her own show seems tougher, more capable and smarter than the Xena on HTLJ. Plus, her romance with Hercules seemed rather convenient, if unnecessary.

One thing I noted while watching these episodes over a very short time, was how often they reuse actors for future characters! One week, Hercules has slayed the King's evil son and the next week that same actor is now a gladiator! They also use the same stuntment to play the evil henchmen in just about every episode, so try not to look at the faces too closely. I was also surprised by how many up and coming actors participated on the show, like Lucy Liu or Karl Urban.

Another aspect of the show to note is the "jiggle" factor. My goodness! They have dressed the women on this show SO scantily! As a female fan, this is doing nothing for me, other than creating an annoying distraction. At first, I thought that I was being too critical, but after listening to Kevin Sorbo and Michael Hurst comment on it too, I knew I wasn't being too picky. In fact, Kevin Sorbo was amazed with some of the things that they had gotten away with and how shameless they were! And Michael Hurst commented that sales of the Wonderbra increased tenfold after the airing of this season. Thankfully, there are many beautiful men cast on the show, Michael Hurst included, and Kevin Sorbo has a body quite worthy of Hercules. So ladies, there is something for all of us! It's not just for the guys!

One feature that I enjoyed probably more than anything else, was being able to watch some of the episodes with either Kevin Sorbo, Michael Hurst or both. Sadly, KS and MH are not in the same room when watching the episode, which I thought would have been more fun! Their observations are often very cheeky or self-deprecating and always amusing! Kevin Sorbo does seem to forget some of the details of the episodes, but after 10 years who can blame him? Michael Hurst impressed me with how much thought and care he put into the character development of Iolaus. And, it is only when you hear these men discuss their fight scenes, that you realize how difficult they really were to orchestrate -- because on screen they make them seem effortless! And I wish that they had provided commentary for the Xena trilogy episodes The Gauntlet and Unchained Heart, because I am sure that they would have had some great stories to share on that!

I am so glad that I bought this collection! I have gone ahead and ordered the next four seasons. It's a splurge, but I can't resist! If this is just the beginning of the journey, I know that it is only going to get better and better!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Show, Oct 26 2003
By
Matthew Edmundson (Winter Haven, Florida United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Hercules:Journeys S1 (DVD)
Hercules the Legendary Journeys was one of the most popular syndicated shows ever. It was originally part of the action pack with other shows such as Kung Fu, Tekwar, Babylon 5, and Highlander. Hercules was the crown jewel of the action pack and is finally out on DVD.

Hercules is executive produced and founded by Sam Raimi(Evil Dead Series and Spiderman). The lead character is played by Kevin Sorbo and he established himself as the best Hercules ever. He was outstanding and could act unlike some of the previous people to play the strongest man alive.

Hercules The Legendary Journeys contains the five original made for TV movies and all 13 episodes that were put out in season 1. The movies are about an hour and 45 minutes long and are great. I've enjoyed reliving the experience of watching them, and enjoy them all a lot except for the Maze of the Minotaur which lacks the originality of the first four. The 13 episodes tell the tales of Hercules, as he goes off and helps people that are in need.

It's a great show with a great cast. Tawny Kitaen plays Hercules wife in the movies. She it totally hot and it's a shame she's gone of the deep end. Anthony Quinn plays the king of the gods Zues. Michael Hurst plays Hercules best friend Iolas and there is also Lucy Lawless and Xena in a couple of episodes. There are a couple of other actors that are in the show that look familiar and can be seen in a lot of Sam Raimi's stuff.

This is a great show. It's awesome being able to just pop a DVD in and watch a great episode from a great tv show. Any fan of mythology has to get this. Any fan of the tv show should get it. You won't regret buying it. Don't miss out on it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Better Than GREAT, Sep 20 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Hercules:Journeys S1 (DVD)
I've been looking forward to getting the first season of H:TLJ on DVD for the LONGEST time and was not as all disappointed when it finally showed. This set is even better than anticipated.

The background and commentary from the stars of the show, Sorbo and Hurst, is wonderful. You can actually see them watching the episodes along with you or, if you prefer, listen to their comments as you watch. I only wish we could have heard from both actors on more than a few episodes. Also would have loved to heard from Rob Tapert on a few of those first season episodes as well.

The installment with Kevin Sorbo and one of the directors (of his first HTLJ movie?) is fun and quite telling. They obviously respect each other a great deal.

Even the small gaff's in both Sorbo and Hursts memories are endeariong. We tend to forget how long ago these shows were taped and they've been inviolved in so many!

In the furture I would like to see outtakes, comments from other actors such as Bruce Campbell (Autolycus) and Bob Trebor (Salmoneus) and also a segment with Sorbo and Hurst together, in the same room, taking a trip down memory lane, especially about their good friend, Kevin Smith (Ares) who is sadly no longer with us. However, we have five in a half more seasons to go for all that!

The picture quality in these DVDs is superior, much better than any of the videos (tape) done years ago, and I eagerly await Season Two and the surprizes it has in store for the HTLJ fans!

I PREORDERED HERCULES SEASON ONE AS SOON AS I KNEW IT WAS COMMING OUT ON DVD AND I'M GLAD I DID. THE BOX SET IS BRILLIANT AND SO ARE THE EXTRAS. THE COMMENTARY GIVEN BY KEVIN AND MICHAEL ARE BOTH ENTERTAINING AND FUNNY, ESPECIALLY THE COMMENTARY GIVEN BY THEM PHYSICALLY DURING CERTAIN EPISODES. THE PICTURE IS SHARP AND CLEAR. I CAN'T WAIT FOR SEASON 2 TO COME OUT. THIS IS A GREAT DVD AND A MUST FOR ALL HERCULES FANS. THE BOX SET IS DEFINATELY WORTH THE MONEY AND OFFERS GREAT HOURS OF ENTERTAINMENT. I FOR ONE WILL DEFINATELY BE BUYING THEM AS THEY ARE REALEASED.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hours of entertainment at a good price., July 31 2003

I pre-ordered this set as soon as I found out about it and I'm glad I did. I watched Hercules (and Xena) for years while it was on TV and miss it, so I get my fix when I need it now. Hercules and Iolas have a positive buoyancy and a "nothing is sacred" humor that is sadly lacking in a lot of hero action series so it's also refreshing to watch. This set has all the Action Pack movies as well as Season 1 (which includes the Xena trilogy), pamphlets, etc and supposedly a commemortive coin (though I found none in my package and there was no customer service number to call inside either, that was one downer). But the quality is good, the beginnings are the original beginnings, which is fun, and you get to see Zeus when he was played by Anthony Quinn, Lucy Lawless when she was playing bit parts, and Ares before Kevin Smith personified the role so well. In fact, though a Xena fan (and I know I will be making some Xena fans angry when I say this) I must say that the Hercules set is much BETTER than the Xena first season set because it actually has commentary by Kevin Sorbo and Michael Hurst, while the Xena set is sadly lacking in that. The commentary is lots of fun, especially if you're already familiar with the stories. Something to watch out for, that I never realized with the TV shows, is the "No (blank) was harmed during the filming of this episode" in the credits. They usually have some bit in there about "Centaurs" or "satyrs" or "giants" or something funny. Fun to watch for anyway. And Amazon offers a much better price than the fan sites do with the added bonus of free shipping for orders over $... That makes the perDVD price worth it. Yes, I really think it's worth your investment of time and money and I think you should get it. It's too much fun to pass up.

5.0 out of 5 stars The way "Xena" Season One, should have been, July 20 2003
This review is from: Hercules:Journeys S1 (DVD)
I am a MUCH bigger fan of "Xena Warrior Princess" than I ever was of "Hercules". However, I have always had a soft spot for the big guy, and I so I decided to go ahead and buy the season one dvd set, mainly because of the numurous guest spots by Lucy Lawless. Compared to the rushed job that Anchor Bay and Davis/Panzer did with the S1 set of Xena, it seems that they were more concerned with the Herc set here. Xena didn't really have much to offer for extras (unless you purchased at Best Buy, and even then that wasn't much) here, they give you not only audio commentary, but a seperate "video" commentary, where you you get watch Kevin or Michael watching the eps. The quality is great (Xena's quality should reach this leval somewhere along S2, since thats when they went to 35 mm). Hopefully, we will get something cool like this with future Xena and Herc releases

5.0 out of 5 stars CHEESE IS GOOD., July 6 2003
This review is from: Hercules:Journeys S1 (DVD)
The co-produced USA Studios and Univerals productions of Hercules: TLJ and Xena: WP will forever be known as cheese-fests, but that is not necessarily a bad thing. The cheese factor in both of these series is what actually makes them both entertaining and fun to watch. If it's not Xena's screeching battle-cry or Herc's absolutley ridiculous (and not funny) jokes, it's the over-the-top fight scenes and the fight of good over evil that makes these series an absolute joy to watch.

Another aspect to these series that always attracted me to them was the half-way decent wardrobe department. The costumes that both the good guys (and civilians) and the bad guys wore were always fairly attractive and well suited (no pun intended) for the job. The armor costumes for the bad guys and creatures were always a high point for me. Nothing like a tall warlord dressed in a half bronze and leather strap armor set. Take for instance Xena's second in command who later turns against her. Great costume.

But anyway, how's the DVD set? The DVD set although a bit over spaced, IMO, (they could have fit the entire set onto 6 DVDs rather than 7), is a much better presentation than the first season set of Xena that came out earlier this year. However, that's due to the different film stocks used during the filming of these two series. Hercules was always filmed with 35mm film which tranfers fairly well to DVD. However the first two seasons (I think, but I may be wrong) of Xena were filmed on 16mm film and as you may guess, doesn't transfer well to DVD. And so the quality sometimes struggles to stay above VHS quality. But the Hercules set stays well within fullscreen DVD standards for a TV series at least. So you have nothing to worry about here for picture quality.

The sound quality is on par with the Xena set. Remastered in 5.1 Surround, the LFE channel is used quite extensively with the music track and quite a bit for special effects. The surrounds bring in a subtle surround presense with environmental effects and music.

The content itself? This set includes the first 5 Action-Pack movies that basically set up the series and introduces a few of the main characters along with the 13 episodes that make up the short but well rounded first season. These 13 episodes include what is known as the "Xena Trilogy" which introduces the character Xena and how she turns her life of murdererous warrior-ness around to befriending Hercules and fighting for the forces of good against those of the like she was once apart of.

Lucy Lawless co-stars in a couple other roles before she takes the character of Xena. Rene O'Conner also co-stars in one of the movies in some other role, but basically plays the same character-type as Gabrielle.

Overall, I'm pleased with this set and look forward for the rest of Anchor Bays' releases of Hercules and Xena.
