Why can't game developer's get it into their heads that we appreciate content and open ended-ness. 3.0 out of 5 stars Way too buggy and slow
This could have been a great RPG. This could have been a fantastic RPG. This could have been THE RPG. Instead, we have this. It's buggy, it's slow, it's far too easy once you reach level 30 or so, etc. Generally, it's just too ambitious. The game world is huge; you could literally spend several hours walking from one side of the continent to another if it didn't...

The most popular titles are ALWAYS the games that allow the player to be creative, rather then just responding to obvious plot and crude visual cues. Morrowind really allows players to involve themselves in the game with a lot more freedom of action than any other I've played. Steal someone's big house, lay out your favorite weapons, grab your lute, and a jug of mazte, maybe some moon rock and chill until you decide to master a continent that will take you MONTHS to explore... literally!
(the problem is that all the guys that were playing Dungeons and Dragons in the eighties got jobs writing code, instead of game design.)

4.0 out of 5 stars A World of Possibilities, July 18 2004
By

Right off the bat let me tell you one thing: Morrowind III is a great game. The animation might not be great, but don't let that trick you into thinking that is a crappy out-dated game, because you would be dead wrong. Morrowind is a great RPG for XBOX (one of the few). You have limitless possibilities for what you can do. You dont even have to follow the main quest if you don't want to. You can join any of the various guilds, houses, etc. and rising through the ranks will take a considerable amount of time. This is not a game you can finish in a few hours. This is not even a game you can finish in a few days. With so much to do and see this makes for a great game. It is totally customizable (name, race, class, etc.) right down to how much the NPCs like you. Using an endless array of magic, weapons, armor, and items, you can choose any path you want. This is my second favorite RPG for XBOX (my favorite is Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic which, if you haven't already, you have to go out and buy because it is awesome). All in all, a very good game. (A little advice: get the Platinum Hits version of the game. Its the same game but its 10+ dollars cheaper.)

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome, July 15 2004
Ce commentaire est de: Elder Scrolls 3 Morrowind (Game of the Year) (Video Game)
The Elder Scrolls III series is an amazing, wide and beautiful world. Dont listen to the other reviewers that tell you that the graphics suck. The truth is, it doesn't matter. The world is so large and beautiful that you don;t even notice. Sure, there are bugs such as that if you add soultrap on target to ANY spell it stays forever. Character creation and development is awsome, with many classes. If you are one of the beast races, people may make rude comments on your posture and societal standing.

Overall, a wonderful experience that will provide a long and entertaing journey through Vvardenfell(yes, i spelled that right).

Hmmm... The guy near the bottom is an complete idiot for saying this game sucked... Maybe because he dosent know how to play different game other than lord of the rings (attack and kill... point of game. Thats it.) So dont listen to people like that guys. If youre a smart person, youll be able to actually play a game that isnt only based on one button. You can do what ever you want in this game, you dont HAVE to go on the main quest, really. Do what you want, when you want, how you want- As they say. By the way, im 14. =P

This could have been a great RPG. This could have been a fantastic RPG. This could have been THE RPG. Instead, we have this. It's buggy, it's slow, it's far too easy once you reach level 30 or so, etc. Generally, it's just too ambitious. The game world is huge; you could literally spend several hours walking from one side of the continent to another if it didn't freeze.

This brings me to the most frustrating part of this game. It freezes every 30 minutes or so! It's like the programmers had absolutely no idea what they were doing. Also, there's some sort of weird problem where NPCs drift from their normal locations over time.

I'm pretty sure Morrowind runs below 30 frames per second. This is shocking, because the graphics are blocky, the animations are unbelievably bad, and the texturing is muddy and pixelated.

Now on to the good parts of the game. The experience system is different from most RPGs; instead of just gaining experience points for killing stuff, you get better at things as you use them. There are about 30 different categories from Destruction spells to lockpicking. Every time you perform one of these actions successfully (even stuff like taking a hit while wearing heavy armor), you gain experience in that skill. When you gain ten levels in your selected major or minor skills, your character gets a level. Depending on what other stats leveled up in between character levels, you have different amounts of points to spend upgrading your character.

Combat is simplistic; you basically just keep hitting the R button until the enemy is dead. You can build up your weapon skill a lot faster if you just repeatedly chop instead of building up for a more powerful swing. Once you get to a certain level (30 or so), you become invincible. Nothing can kill you, no matter how hard they try. You don't even need your healing spells and potions.

There's a huge amount of quests for you to undertake, from running errands to escort missions to being hired as an assassin. All of these quests are kept track of in a near-worthless log that records all events in the order you experienced them; there's no way to look for a particular quest.

Morrowind is a good game. It's not great, but it's passable. The slow pace will drive some away; the freezing will drive away others. Those that stick with it will find 300-500 hours of gameplay to keep them busy for a long time. Just make sure to save often.

5.0 out of 5 stars It grows on you so steadily, it will be surprising, Jun 24 2004

When i first purchased morrowind, i had JUST built my first computer, and figured that my onboard video would be enough to handle this game. LOL was i wrong, and since i was having so much... er of a slow time playing it, i shelved it... until i had completely forgotten i bought it altogether. well, down the road, i bought a vert nice video card, and was goin through some games and i picked up Morrowind again, completely astonished that i had forgotten of its existence in my house. Boy oh boy, what an overwhelming feeling it is when you get started, and have not a CLUE as to what the hell you are supposed to do, of course, this is a GOOD feeling ^_^. You immediately are swathed in the games... how to say... Openness, and it gives you this feeling of adventure that you perhaps had not felt before. So you continue on roaming around, perhaps attempting to be sneaky and be a thief, mashing the quicksave before each attempt lol, and then you make your way over to the big bug called a silt strider, and plop on over to balmora by chance. Perhaps then it is when you find that you should maybe partake in the story a little. So you venture to find Mr Cosades and when you do, you go through your little sequence of events and when you are done talking to him, you embark outside the city walls. At your first siting of an enemy, you may be a little overwhelmed with the, WHAT? why am i not HITTING this thing? Relax, relax, it takes time and effort to build these things up. Weapon skill builds up with useage, and each time you hit an enemey, the skill meter bumps up a bit, the more you use it, the easier time you will have with an enemy. No worries folks, it is quicker than you might think. Then you wonder how exactly you level up? Well, to be of some service and save you the effort, you might notice that each time you level a major or minor skill, your level meter goes up by 1/10. you are thinking, wow, that is a cool way to level up! so of course, you figure it out, after your first three levels, leveling is a Cinch, and of course, you keep on embarking... now you may or may not find that embarking on the main quest is HARD without a strategy guide, well, in my opinion, it is VERY hard to do so... but, not impossible. There is SO much in the world of morrowind to see. The world is enourmous, and you can quite literally do anything you please. Walk, run, steal, kill, travel, fly, ANYTHING. you dont like the price that person is trying to sell something to you for? why... if you are brutish, just kill him/her and loot the fort lol, but beware, as the law system in morrowind is very unforgiving... you will find yourself sneaking around quite avidly if you pull off too many stunts like that. There is a small secret that perhaps will aid the beginner, upon your arrival in Balmora, seek out the weapon shop owner, Tal Virr or something, he is a Kajiit salesmen. Upon entering you will notice that he has stacks of gold sitting right next to him. well, simply steal ONE piece of gold, and the Kajiit will come after you, be ready to fight! You can as a level 1 character take him out, but it is difficult, remember to save beforehand. When he is dead, drop all your stolen loot, and run outside, pay the guards 1 gold, and run back. Congrats, not only do you have a place to stay, and put all your belongings, but you have an assortment of goods to keep, or sell for gold :)
In any case, try Morrowind out, it is a deeply enthralling experience and is very much worth the money to try it. I do recommend both PC and XBOX versions, but make sure you use the patch for pc and have a powerful enough system to run the game ok. Have fun!
and a little PS, once you obtain a place of residence, it is very fun decorating your house, quite fun.

If you're a RPG lover than The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind Game of the Year Edition (GOTY) is a must have. Nine playable races, a wide arsenal of weapons, armor, and spells, large maps, stunning graphics, what doesn't this game have. You have a wide variety of classes and if you don't like the options, then you can make your own class. This game is packed with every thing a RPG gamer would want.

Many people before me writing there reveiws have said this the greatest rpg of all time, while i have to admit this is one of the better rpg's and mabye one of the best rpg for Xbox, their are definitly better games then this. Sure their are many paths you can take to play this game but it pales in comparison to the infinate choices you make in Arcanum: of Steamworks and Magick Obscura.
In Arcanum you can complete the whole game without picking up a weapon; i actually have done ecaclty that with a charismatic gnome
The illustrius title for the best RPG has to be a three way tie of
-Everquest(and all its expansions, everquest 2 has me drooling with anticipation)
-Star Wars KOTOR (my personal favorite)
-City of Heroes (even though it has just recently came the number of subscribers combined with future patches will make it a fantastic game)

But i digress, this game is a great buy for any hardcore gamer, it has few noticable flaws and the pros heavily outwheigh the cons

The RPG of all time i think not, a great game that will supply you with hours of fun now that is this game
