Simply Beautiful Music,
By "underscrorelou" (Denville, NJ United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Canto (Audio CD)
I first heard Gino Vannelli back in 1975 by accident. American Bandstand was on the TV featuring a vocalist singing this very funky catchy tune called "People Gotta Move". Enthralled with the unique sound and this long haired vocalist with a tremendous voice, I instantly became a fan. Since 1973, Gino has made fourteen albums. Each work is brilliantly written, performed and produced. Canto, the culmination of 30 years of creating exposes Gino for what he truly is, a brilliant vocalist, writer, musician, and artist. Sung in four different languages, this album is a beautiful showcase for his extraordinary talent. Had a rough day? Sit back and listen to this CD. This music will touch your heart, your mind, and your soul. If you're a fan of Gino, then this album is a must. If you have somehow stumbled on to this review and have never heard any of Gino's work, do yourself a favor and start listening. Gino is one of the finest musicians in the world and unfortunately not too many people know about him. He is so much more than the guy who sung "I Just Wanna' Stop". It's time to spread the word and give Gino his due.

Thank you Mr. Vanelli, for creating another *masterpiece* that opens the heart and makes the soul sing!!What a beaufiful cd...every piece is amazing. Since Crazy Life, you have inspired me...with Pauper and Paradise, you stunned me! I have no words to describe Canto. Just....Thank you! I am so glad that you followed your heart and decided to share this wonderful music with the world! What a loss if you had never recorded again! Your fans will always adore your music and want more! Always! May the Universe give back to you what you have given to us!

CANTO is beautiful - every track exceptional - I love it,
By Karen W (USA) - See all my reviews

The tracks in Gino Vannelli's CANTO are, each and every one, wonderful - heart wrenchingly beautiful. I cannot fully articulate how much I enjoy this CD. I've listened to, and loved, all of Gino Vannelli's albums / CDs / music / over the years. If you are expecting the same synthesized pop/rock/jazz that you liked (and I loved!) in his "Powerful People" album (which was co-produced by Herb Alpert) you may be disappointed by CANTO - which is more in the "Classical" music genre. I feel - enriched - each and every time I listen to it.

Beauty and Brawn,
By A Customer
This review is from: Canto (Audio CD)
This collection presents Gino Vannelli's magnificent voice in a format he hadn't recorded previously. Let's call it pop-opera, for lack of a more precise description. The beauty (tender, heart-tugging ballads) of this music is matched by the power (brawn) of Vannelli's voice, soaring to operatic heights with passion and confidence. I'm no opera critic (or fan), so I can't really say if the performance compares to those of legitemate opera singers. But I can say that, for a popular recording, this is one remarkable vocal tour de force, accompanied by lush but not over-done orchestration. A highlight: the Celtic folk-influenced "Wayward Lover," a song that brings me to tears. Why this CD has not been formally released (or marketed) in the US as of this writing is beyond me. Millions more should be exposed to the beauty of this remarkable recording.

this is NOT a return to the jazz-fusion of his best work,

Gino hasn't really done anything for me since the late 70's... I am in it more for the musicians and the groove he USED to display...for the past 20 years it's been this romantic "from the soul" stuff. Great, if you're a female looking for love and longing for romance, but please Gino, return to the "Brother to Brother" days or "Storm at Sunup". This sleepy stuff bores me to death. You and Sting need to wake up!

The Voice that Launched a Thousand Ships,

This review is from: Canto (Audio CD)
From the very first time when I awoke in college in 1975 to the strains of "Storm at Sunup", I have been absolutely enraptured by this man's voice. Having seen him in concert twice, one in Toronto and once in Greece, his nearly 4 1/2 octave range has long been his mainstay. This album should push him over the top and his recognition which has been long overdue will finally reach the stars. His voice should be placed next to Sarah Brightman and Michael Crawford, and inactuality, if they were ever looking for a person to surpass Crawford's performance as the Phantom, they should give it to Gino. As for the person who wanted to give his cd away, send it to me. There is always room for two cd's of the best performer to ever sing from his heart on my shelf. Gino is, the best voice in music today!

"Moonlit tears",
By Nad Sylvan (Stockholm, Sweden) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Canto (Audio CD)
First time I broke into tears listening to Gino Vannelli was way back in 1981 when I had just purchased "Nightwalker". There had been a three year gap between the previous "Brother To Brother", and some ugly rumours were going round that Gino had been killed by the maffia or something like that. So half way through the title track (Nightwalker) I just bursted into tears, partly because of the joy Gino wasn't dead and partly that the song was just beautiful. Now, 22 years later I am still in awe over this mans work, his soul and his great passion for music. He has got something that is very unique and rare these days - it is spelled c-l-a-s-s, it is spelled i-n-t-e-g-r-i-t-y. Gino is almost overly sophisticated in his flawless performances and of course only gets better and better which he here showcases in his latest and perhaps most beautiful offering entitled "Canto". I just cannot get enough of this album. I have broken into tears several times this last week (I have had the album for five days now!!!) something that usually don't happen from listening to "new" music. Why good! That's emotions and they should be used! My absolute faves are "Canto", "Parole Per Mio Padre" and "Wayward Lover". These are the "criers" for me! The rest of course are just as good and I am slowly beginning to love them all. The only thing that keeps me from giving this album five stars, is that I would have wish for a little more variety in the orchestral arrangements and song textures; there are big crescendos in almost every song (big cymbals, very strong emotions). Two more lighter tracks would have been the perfect mix I think. But still..., every individual composition on this album are worthy of more than five stars to me. Get it? Now go get "Canto" and be blessed.

I did not like this album at all. If I had heard it I would not have purchased it. I can appreciate the effort it takes to make a CD but......I will be giving it to the first person I encounter who likes it.
