5.0 out of 5 stars Best CD I Own
Sam Roberts is an artist who is in my opinion unmatched in today's music industry. Every single song on this album is great. It makes me proud as a Canadian to have him as one of our nations musical talents.

3.0 out of 5 stars This Flame does not burn bright !
Sam Roberts has a fresh lyrical perspective for the Canadian music scene. His powerful lyrics remain the beauty and core of his CD.

However, his vocal performance is bland and non outstanding clearly lacking style for a male rock act aspiring to cross over into warm international waters (a la; Bryan Adams or Neil Young).

ROBERTS' musical arangements towards his...

5.0 out of 5 stars a lasting, relaxed rock band, Jan 22 2005

This review is from: We Were Born In A Flame (Audio CD)
i bought this cd back in 2003, and now it's 2005. i still listen to this cd about once a month. now if that doesn't say something about the quality of the cd, i dunno what does. now, sam roberts has a beautiful simple voice, perfect for for rock. now, if you ever have the chance to see the boys live, do it! they have a great, hard rocking sound at shows. "brother down" is a catchy single, "taj mahal" is the most beautiful love song, delicate but still solid. "no sleep" is haunting and amazing, with two french verses talking about a beautiful girl. the music is happy, but listen to the words, and the cd will blow you away.

Sam Roberts' album 'We Were Born In A Flame' is honestly the best album I have ever ever EVER heard. Heavenly honest lyrics who hit you with just breathtaking tunes. I just can't stop listening to this album. I listen to alot of music and always try to find something that reflects the inside of me. This album hits completely right through to the middle. If I ever would get the chance to shake Sam's and the band's hands I would do it in such thankfulness I cannot explain.

Simple, honest straight out Rock and roooooll!!! Music for the soul!!!

This is a really good rock CD. It is full of intelligence and talent and has its own unique, memorable sound. I first heard Sam Roberts as a live band before this album was released, opening for the Hip and was very pleasantly surprised by them. Any band that comes on the stage as an opening act and can intrigue the audience and catch their attention (even when the crowd doesn't know them or their songs) is a band worth giving a chance to.

I quickly bought this album and have never regretted it. It's been in my playlist for a couple of years now and I'm always delighted all over again when the tracks come up in my list. It's a quality purchase with the power to last over a long period of time.

HARD ROAD: (10\10) 10 to the lyrics 10 to the solo 10 to the vocals 10 to the music! Some great rifts in here man! A wicked beginning! A brilliant sound, some great life-lessons here too!!

WHERE HAVE ALL THE GOOD PEOPLE GONE: (10\10) 10 to the lyrics, 10 to the solo, 10 to the vocals 10 to the music! Great to sing through! A true song about reality man, like all the songs there isn't a part where things tend to loop. A great vocals, love to hear this live!! The part in the middle is enjoyable, music calms down - alittle, and he starts sing WOW!! Brilliant ending!

BROTHER DOWN: (10\10) 9 to the lyrics 11 to the solo and the music, 10 to the vocals! This is a song where the music is brilliant! Don't get me wrong the lyrics are awesome too, but there are better ones--believe it or not! The solo guitar and those little drum things you beat with your hands are cool too!!

HIGHER LEARNING: (10\10) 9.5 to the lyrics 10 to the vocals and music and solo! There are little bits that you love to hear, "we will rise like a pheonix from the ashes" a really awesome song. Love to blare this one, well i do with all of them, but you know how it is. Brilliant guitar solo work!! Nice drumming too!

DEAD END: (11\10) Brilliant fun bouncing vocals and lyrics and music, all 11. Its such a great tune, Listening to it now, <laughs> wow, I can so relate to this song. Great rhyming, true rock man! You'll be crazy if you like rock, and you don't like this song, man! There's a slow bit, but it ain't real slow the music still kicking! It suits the mood of the song wickedly! AHHH I GET COLD!! as he says in a line, wow SAM ^_^

TAJ MAHAL: (10\10) A love song yes, but he don't get into all the sappy details. We all have views of songs, and my personal view is he lost TAJ MAHAL. The music is wicked, there is a special instrument used here, dunno what its called, but its superb!! More brilliant vocals, lovely closing, Sam is a true rocker!! The chorus is great, now awesome but is great!! The music tops everything, but the lyrics are beautiful man!! He sings it right too. Another nice closing! LOL

EVERY PART OF ME (11\10) OK, so you know those old days when you were young call that old neighbor a witch, and riding your bike around! Oh the memories. Well this song brings back those memories the sound is so wicked! Lyrics are so meaningful an 11 to everything the special instrument used here is so nice for it!

THE CANADIAN DREAM (10\10) 8.5 for the lyrics, 10 for the vocals 10 for the music, its such a true piece. I love it! Starts off slow, and then he gets into the middle and its a greater than ever! would love to hear this live man! absolute brilliant!

RARIFIED (10\10) 10 vocals 10 music 10 lyrics.This is SAMROBERTS!
a great ending!

ON THE RUN : (11\10) 10 for everything except the music I would give an 11. Its such a jumpy beat, and its a really wicked song! Don't skip it, I dare YA not too! Especially the chorus, you'll love the guitar! What to listen too the vocals or the guitar, such a hard choice, I love his lyrics especially in this one!!!
I bleed ROCK N ROLL

DON'T WALK AWAY EILEEN (10\10) 10 lyrics 10 music 10 vocals, its such an amazing song, ya I'm forgetting the solos, but do you see my point when you hear this song, this is another great one! A great story, and use of words. Its funny! On the video the man is watching HOCKEY! About in the middle of the song you hear some great creativity!! SHAWEET! = )

NO SLEEP: (10\10) Some really nice music, and the lyrics WOW! He sings french and english on this one! The chorus is good, but I love everything else more! SAM rock on! I love this bit! TRES BIEN!!! Slower, but that don't mean its back, cuz its not, it is really good!

THIS WRECK OF A LIFE: (8\10) My least liked Sam song, but it is still a wicked tune! In a sense where its all slow, but the music and the lyrics and the music are gorgeous! I never skip it, its such a wonderful piece. Some words of encouragement in there too!

PARANOIA: (11\10) A brilliant ending to a facinating album, some slow accoustic. Really nice melody like all of the songs! His voice, those lyrics, wow! This is an album you won't wanna put down. The end of this song where the slow bit rises to a much faster pace and just ends, absolute FANTASTIC! Sam may have trouble topping this album, but its ok, I will still buy his next one. Prove me wrong Sam : D.

I am your number one fan in NEW BRUNSWICK, I know it!!

Before today, I didn't know who Sam Roberts was. Now I can't get enough of him. Bouncy, fun loving and mellow, "We Were Born in a Flame" is like a modern Beatles, but with its own vibe. My favorite track would have to be "Brother Down", a really beautiful, totally truthful song. There are plenty of other good songs on this album, but "Brother Down" is the best way to represent this CD. I wish Sam lots of success in the future. Congrats sir, on a wonderful release.

I'll be the first to admit that until the summer of 2003, I had never heard of Sam Roberts- I saw them at a Molson House Party in Windsor in August and have been hooked ever since. This is a brilliantly-put together CD, and those who are judging them based on a TV performance have no business reviewing these guys. They are awesome live, and "Born In..." does anything but disappoint. With all the haters reviewing this CD, they should be asking "where have all the good music lovers gone?"

4.0 out of 5 stars Shaggy Roberts offers up some gems, April 13 2004
By
This review is from: We Were Born In A Flame (Audio CD)
"We Were Born in a Flame", the eagerly anticipated full-length release by Sam Roberts, the Montreal singer/songwriter, had more expectations heaped on it than people would have origianally thought, Roberts included. But this disc lives up to expectations, as he gives us some solid songwriting and catchy tunes that are more or less entertaining.

The faults with this record are that two of the best songs, "Don't Walk Away Eileen" and "Brother Down" are also on his debut EP. But he serves up another big hit with the anthemic "Where Have All the Good People Gone?", a great song that was plastered all over Canadian radio upon its release. While those are the best three, there are some other worthy tracks here, although the sound on some of the more mellow numbers gets a tad repetitive, taking away from his intelligent lyrics. Had he gone to a different song structure on some of these songs, they could have been much better.

But overall, this is a very good disc, showing the world that there is indeed a strong young crop of Canadian musicians, and Sam Roberts has shown himself to be one of the scruffy leaders of this movement. There is much influence here from the 60's and 70's, which gives many tunes here a certain foot-tapping delight that is becoming more common, but is still relatively rare. "We Were Born in a Flame" signalled the arrival of Sam Roberts on the Canadian scene, and no doubt we will be seeing more of him in the future, when he comes out with his next disc of undeniably Canadian rock.
