WYNONNA = GREAT SOUL SINGER!!!,
By
This review is from: What the World Needs Now Is Lo (Audio CD)
In concert, Wynonna is a stunning soulful singer with no limitations!! Finally this broad scope is happening in the recording studio and all the better for us fans!! Wynonna is a classic voice who sings with a great deal of passion and a must-see concert experience that I have had the pleasure of experiencing numerous times and this is the real deal!! Originally this collection was going to be a really broad departure for Wynonna but scaled back to include old country feelings~still a step forward!! Music industry always like to pigeon-hole artists but Wynonna is too vast a talent for this tired practice to control for long and this great work shows this clearly!!! GO WYNONNA!!! Lady you got SOUL!!!!!!!

I just love Wynonna Judd's breadth as an artist. Anyone who can drift so seamlessly between grace and wistfulness deserves accolades! This is her most fully realized glimmer of brilliance!Just kidding. This is histerectomy music for hick chicks with trucks. I once dated a girl who liked this. I dumped her. Furthermore, I'm glad I dumped her. I guess this is popular in West Virginia. Well... I guess I won't go to the WV, either. But if y'all come rollin' up in my crib, I got sum bizzniss 4 ya: How's about a shot o' straight-up So Cal Death Metal.

I have never been a big Wynonna fan, but this CD is awesome. Great mix of tunes that leave you wanting additional tracks. Both the new & re-make tunes are well done with Wynonna's voice as pure as ever. I'm very impressed with this overall effort...Wynonna, you go girl!

This is one gorgeous CD that starts slowly and keeps building momentum so that the final product feels like a nice little journey in which you are being led by one of the sweetest and must powerful voices on this earth. Although originally released in 2003, Wynonna indicates in the insert that she'd been working on this release since 2000 and almost gave up as she felt that nothing was feeling quite right. I hope that she is resting comfortably as this may be her best release since she went solo.Not surprisingly "What The World Needs Now" is filled with songs about not giving up and finding salvation through love and faith. The first single "What the World Needs Now" has Wynonna sounding like a goddess with a contagious banjo and fiddle side by side with popping drums and electric guitars. She has rarely sounded more in control of her voice than she does here. "Heaven Help Me" is an emotional plea with a piano and a sweeping strings arrangement that lifts this song above being just music. This song is pure Wynonna. "It All Come Down To Love" takes on politics, telemarketing, trash talking tv evangelists and talk-show hosts. It sounds great and again the answer to all these evils comes from love. It may sound cheesy and single-minded to make such a blanket statement, but at the core not even the biggest cynic can take away Wynonna's desire that her faith and love will carry her through life's punches. "Flies on the Butter (You Can't Go Home Again)," has Wynonna singing with Naomi as they take a nostalgic look at childhood in general. It's a wonderful ballad and should remind those who only know Wynonna through her solo work that this mother and daughter harmonized like few in the business. She makes a strong case for the fusion of country rock, r&b, and pop as exemplified by "I Will Be.' Purists may not like when their favorites expand their horizons, but Wynonna is simply too diverse of a singer to remain within any genre. In my view this is simply country soul. Other standouts include her soulful cover of Foreigner's "I Want To Know What Love Is" with Jeff Beck dropping by for some killer guitar mid through the song. The song loses none of its anthem power although I do miss the strong choruses of the original. Wynonna's version of Elvis' "Burnin' Love" is playful and Wynonna sounds like she's having a ball. The low-key "Who Am I Supposed to Love" may be my favorite cut in the whole CD. It has a light jazzy feel blended with her country grit that makes for a lush change of pace. Great strings! ("No One's Gonna) Break Me Down" has Wynonna channeling Janis Joplin via Melissa Etheridge and winds up being pure Wynonna. "You Are" is a gorgeous ballad about.... love of course, but this time it's celebratory and appreciative rather than full of sorrow. The CD ends with "Rescue Me" and there is no doubt that by the end of the song that Wynonna and the listener have been rescued. Since I've fawned all over this release I do have one quibble, which involve the tight Mutt Lange-like choruses that is found in several of the songs. It's not that they sound bad but a little bland to match Wynonna's chops. Although there is not a single dud in the whole CD, "It's Only Love" has a Bonnie Raitt-like feel and has a contagious chorus but it pales versus the vast majority of this amazing release. "Sometimes I Feel Like Elvis" is just OK but it's probably he only song where I did not think that she was connecting with the song. In a nutshell, if you like Wynonna you will love this release. If you have not had the pleasure this would be a great place to start. This release almost earns 5 stars as it makes a strong impact and it earns it. No histrionics, just a great singer named Wynonna.

She has a new fan!,

I've never listened to Wynonna before, I am an R&B, Jazz music fan, anyway I heard her singing "Heaven Help Me" on the Sharon Osbourne show one evening and I was captivated by her sound, her voice moved me to tears. I tenatively purchased the CD for that one track and fell in love with the whole thing. Her voice is addictive, soulful and gospel. I am humming the words even when I am not playing the CD. I love all the tracks, but I have to say "Who Am I Supposed to Love" stops me in my tracks each time I hear it. "Flies on the Butter" reminds me of family, friends and everything that is love, comfort and family. Thank you Wynonna for this wonderful experience, and now lead me to your backlist....you have a new fan!

It is fantastic to listen to this disk and hear the powerful set of pipes of Wynonna. She's had such a hard couple of years that this disk is such a breath of fresh air. She went back to what she does best...singing from her heart and soul. This just solidifies her place in country music history as one of the most talented and versitile artists.

Her Best Ever!!,

This review is from: What the World Needs Now Is Lo (Audio CD)
I am a HUGE Wynonna fan and have all of her work with and without her mother. I have to say that this is the best she's put out in a while. Mind you, I love it all, but there is something special about this one. It seems to ooze with all of the emotion of what she's been through the last three years. Her voice is in prime form and only seems to be getting better and better. From the very first cut "What the World Needs," I was hooked. By the time I heard "I Want to Know What Love Is," one of my favorite Foreigner songs from high school, I had goosebumps. I will still be playing this one regularly five years from now.
