Frightening and disturbing,
By
This review is from: Cool World (DVD)
You cannot judge this movie by conventional standards. This is not meant to be Roger Rabbit for adults, it is not meant to be Citizen Kane, it is not meant to be Wierd Science. It is meant to be a completely different genre all by itself, and must be judged as such. This movie scares me. Not in the sense of "it scares me that anyone would make a movie this bad," but more in the Blair Witch Project kind of scary. What it lacks in plot and scripting, it makes up for in atmosphere and creepiness. The "wooden nickels" scene is an example of this; some guy throws a handful of wooden nickels to some innocent kids, and the nickels proceed to open their mouths and devour the unsuspecting children. It's this kind of random, disturbing event that makes Cool World worth watching. This is a wierd movie for when you need to go on a major acid trip but you don't want to actually put drugs into your system. It is the movie to watch when you want to leave all reality and morality behind and think about what could happen if we could interact with cartoon characters in a cartoon world that, unlike the "toontown" of Roger Rabbit, resembles our own world much more closely than we'd like to think.

ADULT ANIMATION, NOT FOR YOUNG CHILDREN,
By A Customer
This review is from: Cool World (DVD)
The dvd has Great Quality Sound and Video with lots of vivid colors and many sexual inuendos. There is a Great story line as long as you can follow a plot that suggests that there is more to life than just living on "earth" such as going back and forth to alternate universes. If you have seen and liked "MEET THE FEEBLES" You'll like this one too - this one does not have any bloody scenes or explicit sexual scenes, much is left up to the imagination. I think that Many people need to Learn to use their imagination more and not be so closed-minded.

Kim basinger is probably the main problem with this movie. As soon as she came into the picture the movie lost its coolness. The animation was awesome though.

Ralph Bakshi's live-action/animated film,

I just saw that movie on YouTube yesterday, and I thought it's an awesome live-action/animated film. I do admit, Ralph Bakshi is an artistic genius, and this is a great movie; even though I prefer his 1977 animated film Wizards. And even though, I usually watched family-oriented animated films; but I guess, I am like wholesome vs taboo, and sure it is not much of a comedy, but it is high on fantasy to me.So overall, I enjoyed it - this film; and the soundtrack too. And you know, Kim Basinger (Holli Would) was great in this film (though many people disagree) and also in Tim Burton's film version of Batman as Vicki Vale; even though she screams too much!

Bakshi's worst movie,
This review is from: Cool World (DVD)
The movie is poorly written not to mention the lame special effects. Its a completly souless film. If you liked Fritz the Cat,Wizards,American Pop, or other films by Ralph Bakshi, than stay away from this, because its embarassing.

Cool World is a more mainstream effort from Ralph Bakshi (Lord of the Rings, Wizards, American Pop) than some of his other works but it still shows his genius. There exists a two-dimensional world called Cool World. Sometimes our worlds overlap. In Cool World, humans are Noids and cartoons are Doodles. Brad Pitt is a Noid who has been stuck there for years and has been acting as a detective. The villain (if you want to call her that) is Holli Would, a sexy, talented and smart doodle who wants to get to the Noid world. She plans to do this by having sex with a cartoonist who thinks he created Cool World for a comic book. Pitt works to prevent this from happening as the results could cause the destruction of both worlds. But Pitt has his hands full as Holli is no mere brainless bimbo. The effects are wonderful as cartoon scenery goes from drawing to prop seamlessly. While Cool World looks a little like Toon Town (Roger Rabbit) with its faces on buildings and twisted landscape, but these are not cute toons (although the Tex Avery-style wolves do make an appearance). A fun movie with adult themes and unique imagery.

Let Holli Be Holli - And Me Be Me,

Well, the reviews certainly run the gamut with this one! I personally very much enjoy seeing this film, and continue to do so, whenever it comes on cable. It's not on my top-ten list of DVDs to get, but I'll certainly put it on my "Wish List." I'm not saying so much that this is a "truly great film," nor am I agreeing with the "complete waste of time," crowd, either. I just find it interesting at how quickly people make their declarations and seem to expect that everyone who disagrees with them are some kind of lower form of life, and if you don't want to be like *that*, then you'd better agree with them, post haste. I happen to have a pretty loose sense of humor, and am a bit of a letch (come on - who really isn't - deep down), and so this type of material appeals to me. If you're more the conservative, Christian Coalation, family values, Disney-type, then we can expect more severe opinions from you with regard to this movie, and that's okay, too. I'll make you a deal: I won't force you to watch it, if you don't try to prevent me from liking it. How's that?

Needs more appreciation!!!,
This review is from: Cool World (DVD)
In my opinion, this movie is vastly underrated! One problem is that people want to compare it to Who Framed Roger Rabbit since they both make use of live action and animation. This movie, however, is not aimed toward children. In fact, the language, violence and adult situations make it unsuitable for children. What it DOES offer the grownup crowd, however, is amazing animation sequences along with top of the line actor "live" sequences. (We're talking Brad Pitt, Kim Basinger and Gabriel Byrne here.) This movie begs to be watched over and over again as the animation sequences are so intricate you see new things happening on screen everytime you watch. The animation/live action crossovers are also compelling. My suggestion, when first watching this movie, is to go into it expecting something different. In my opinion, it's well worth the time.

I was never aloud to watch this movie when I was younger, and for good reason. This movie would only be good for people who know curse words and know about sex. It is no childs movie. All in all it was a very good movie to watch. The plot is funny, and the characters are very amusing. If you watch it you should like it.

I can understand everyone else's opinions about this movie...true, the script was a little messy...true the animation interaction with live action was quickly done...but all that is beside the greatness of this film, this movie remains one of my favorite movies of all time. WHY? Because this movie is much more than what it is...obviously there are hidden messages/images in this film...especially in the ending when Holli picks up the "spike" on top of the tower in the real Las Vegas. The title "Cool World" is meant to be a sarcastic quotation. Holli seems to portray evil in the most appealing way. There is a lot of evil going on in the backround and foreground in this film throughout. Temptation (I believe) is the main subject, but there are other subjects tackled in the movie as well. If you have only seen this movie once...it deserves a second look...and if you still don't get the message, then I can only say that "Cool World" is a reflection of who people really are, and it is ironic that so many people seem to hate this film. You simply cannot compare this to "Who Framed..." that film was a typical disney flick...Cool World is a satire of our society. Kim Basinger's cocky acting as the real Holli, was done on purpose (I believe). Because it shows what would happen when you take someone such as a cartoon charater out of it's own environment. Kim Basinger pulled that off really well, she was supposed to appear more animated then the doodle Holli. I don't even believe Holli is really a doodle...and if she is then obviously she may be the 'demon' of Cool World, besides all she does is use people throughout this picture...and whenever she is around...evil is in full effect...and when she's put in her place at the end...Cool World's scenery has changed a bit. I'll leave the rest of this stuff to your own imaginations...I won't spoil it, cause there is much more in this flick. Cool World is a very complex film, and seems like it was written as a puzzle for people to figure out later on. Every time I watch it I noticed something about it that I didn't notice before. The themes in this film are very depressing, dark and gothic and a little to real, so I would not reccomend this picture to children; and I believe it was not intended for children. Cool World deserved better for sure. Highly mis-understood. |
