3.0 out of 5 stars Yeah -- it's OK
But at the end of the day there is alot better garage/punk out there than this.

Get the new Buff Medways -- get the first White Stripes album -- Pick up the money Suzuki record on Estrus. Don't forget to look out for The 1234's!

1. Bang - a song that will make you fall in love with karen o's voice instantly & youll defiantly feel an urge to sing & dance too, its a great way to start off the ep.
2. Mystery Girl - now this song will not only inspire you to sing along & dance too but also will make you feel as is if you must keep listening & find out more about this wonderous band.
3. Art Star - it starts out much like 1 & 2 but than she begans growling/screaming 'art star'... i enjoy the song & find it very useful for letting out frustration. also it gives the album a bit more diversity which brings it together very nicely.
4. Miles Away - this is a very pleasant song that will probably become one of your favorites, but than again theyll all probably be your favortie... it gives you a sense of triumph a real good feel-good song.
5. Our Time - also a feel-good song, if your feeling sad this will defiantly bring you up... its a very nice way to end the ep.

So, once you listen to this throughly, & theres no doubt youll enjoy it, than you should pick up 'fever to tell' there most recent album, yeha youll love it, enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Definition of Yeah!, Feb 14 2004
By
matt (Dublin, Ireland ,EU) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Yeah Yeah Yeahs (Audio CD)
I got this EP after I heard "Fever to tell" and I was pleasently surprised.
It puts all their other songs into context, brings their musical style back to basics with a rawer indie sound.

Karen O's voice is fantastic. She varies from a cute kitten purr to a demented shriek often in the space of one song, and her voice is what make the band special.
"Bang" is the perfect opener to the album with its wonderfull jerky guitar riff, and sex filled lyrics setting the tone for the next 14 minutes.
"Mystery Girl" proves the band capable of a steady rock'n roll number, and "Art Star", my favourite, contains all the elements which make the Yeah Yeah Yeahs such a great band;the inspired guitar riffs, versitial vocals, and punk sensibility.
Not to mention the pop catchiness in all those "doos".

As a guitarist, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs have a lot of appeal for me because of Nick Zinner's exellent guitar work. Just listen to the riff in "Miles Away" and the way his guitar parts sometimes echoe the lyrics.
"Our time" is the closest thing to a slow song on the EP,and showcases the Yeah Yeah Yeahs potential for writing emotive and sincere songs like "maps" on "Fever to Tell".
I would recommend that anyone who enjoyed "Fever to Tell" buy this record as it condences the Yeah Yeah Yeahs sound into 5 slices of brilliance.A fine introduction or definition of the band.

5.0 out of 5 stars thought they were the La's but I like the "Yeahs.."better, Dec 27 2003

This review is from: Yeah Yeah Yeahs (Audio CD)
I love this cd. the lyrics are so inspired and I can see this band becoming HUGE.The music is intense but I think that Art Star is almost a bit humorous. I normally dont purchase cds because I feel like they are fads unless you get something classic like The Doors. I think however that I will make an exception for Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Join with me it will be a revolution!

5.0 out of 5 stars I'll give all their albums five stars! This band is Amazing!!, Dec 16 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Yeah Yeah Yeahs (Audio CD)
Now when I say this band's amazing.I mean they've set a standard of being off the wall, and that's great. To me they're absolutely not generic, they don't have a sixties, seventie's or eighties sound,at all, except for a slight punky sound, that I guess I'll be willing to over look. But,to me they sound more like a loungy ,swanky, styled rock band.Kind of like a spead up really hyper enthusiastic version of Mazzy Star.As a matter of fact, all the band's that people compare them to that I've heard,Suck!!!The White Stripes, the KILLS,Green Day,The Strokes,to me this band sounds WAY,WAY different, and a billion times better. And that's good, because alot of those other bands symbolize a retro sound that I don't like, and will never miss. Now if this band wanted to sound as totally generic, and lame as the other's.Well then I'm sorry to misinterprit them, and this album, and their other one Fever to Tell. It's in my personal opinion that the Yeah,Yeah,Yeah's are on a totally higher level than those other bands. Now whether or not they know this,I don't know, but now as we speak they headline for the White Stripes, and the White Stripes should thank their lucky stars that their no talent behinds can even wittness the Yeah,Yeah,Yeahs.

And I'm not talking musical talent,as far as the guitars, and drums are concerned,if that was the case none of the these bands would have, really any talent.I'd just listen to the stuff I've been listening to,and playing, practically all my life, and that would be,Power Metal.(You see I've been playing guitar quite excellently for 10 year's now,and I'm 23 today)!and I'd of never found this diamond in the rough if I didn't reavaluate what it really takes to be a good sounding band.Karen O's amazing, and unique, totally uncopied vocals, make this band.Along with the fun, totally simple, yet hum worthy lerics. My only problem with this album, and some of the other one,is that it's hard to listen to her singing about what she'd like to do dirty wise to a man. When I am one!Okay,it's not that hard,to listen to HER sing it,SHE'S A WOMAN,think about it!She sound's great.I just don't want people to think I share her views, and ideas. In short it's just not something you want to blare out you'r car.Unless ofcourse you're gay,in which I'm totally, absolutely not!Either way I highly reccommend this album,If you hate Punk Rock,or if you love it.That really doesn't matter with this album, because the good's will really out way the bad's.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well well well!, Dec 3 2003

Ludmila (Tallahassee, FL) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Yeah Yeah Yeahs (Audio CD)
I absolutely love all of the Yeah Yeah Yeah's material. But I'll try not to rave (too much) about this spectacular band in this review. This EP is where my fascination with the YYY's began; it is slim, yes, after all, it is only an EP. (Some critics seem to forget that album length is not one of the qualities of an EP). Anyhoo. I understand (and agree) with a lot of the musical comparisons people are making to the YYY's; among them, PJ Harvey, Chrissie Hynde, The White Stripes, et many many alii (there seems to be some sort of musical comparison, however far-fetched, for every YYY's song). . . However, even though this band definitely seems to have been influenced by a variety of other (mostly garage-type) bands, I'd like to view them in an isolated manner; i.e., as their "own band". And I'm oh so very tired of naysayers of some really great new bands out there whining about the so-called "revivalist" rock movement. "Is there nothing original anymore?!" they proclaim in exaggerated angst, tugging away at their goatees. This sort of thinking/complaining has been occuring since the beginning of that timeless and honorable genre we call "rock and roll". How soon many forget that a supersensational group like the Beatles weren't entirely original, either. Anyhoo. On to the YYY's EP. "Bang" kicks it off with a supersexual, supersexy, "come hither" attitude which just about knocked my indie socks right off the first time I heard it. Karen O howls about "needing the real thing tonight" in an electrifyingly powerful and femme manner. . . "Art Star" explodes onto the "art scene" (if you will) with unrestrained energy and irreverence. Totally out of control. The music complements Karen's now-frantic, now-sweet, vocals most (unconventionally) gracefully. An extremely tight-woven song; intermittently blatant aural attack and soothingly soulful massage. . . "Miles Away" is my favorite on the EP. Many many nights have I spent driving (and singing/ screeching along) to this mind-blowing tune. . . also "picturing people in a better world". . . "Our Time" tones the otherwise totally frenetic energy of this EP down, just a notch or two. It's not the most complex song, but it's totally captivating. Karen's vocals are absolutely enchanting. She is a siren with the ability to lure her fans (unknowingly and ultimately uncaringly) to just about anywhere. What we have here is a very talented trio of "hipsters" (as they are so often called), who have all the talent, drive, and that ineffable "it" to continue marking their territory in "indieland", and to endure. Flavor of the month? as many critics/naysayers like to claim. Hardly. Oh, no. Hype, schmype. These kids have enough talent, energy, vibrance, charisma, and on and on, to keep their fans very very happy for a very long time. Well, at least they've got me dancing in my Docs. Oh, yeah, and if you ever get the chance, do go see them play live. . .their live shows are like a rock and roll rollercoaster ride, leaving you dizzy and wanting more more more. . .

This album rocks my socks over and over. I can't help but listen to it every day. With Karen O croons odd voice, it makes the band very origional. And just the fact that it has a female single makes me happy. Great beats. A must have for everyone. :)

Q: Hyped? A: OVER HYPED!
How can a band not even release their first e.p. and be in every magazine? Oh yeah. have a really really sexy lead singer that is a girl whose style is trashy and rock-n-roll. and then play shows with media hypesters the strokes and the white stripes.

that being said, are the YYY's worth your time and money?
YES!!!
The first song "bang" is perfect. This is worth the cost of the e.p. It is a very sexy song that introduces you to Karen O in a good way. The minute you hear you'll want to know more about her and what she eats and where she sleeps. This is true whether your male or female. She puts a total spell on you. Its a very jitter thunderous song.
The rest of the songs on here are great except for "art star" which is annoying because it is a grind song with this horrible pop chorus that will make you scratch your head.
the YYY's add a fresh face to this media hyped rock revial. hype well deserved.

4.0 out of 5 stars It's a Mad House, Feb 10 2003
This review is from: Yeah Yeah Yeahs (Audio CD)
First note: yes, this EP is short... but it's an EP. They are supposed to be small snaps of music released at a lower price. Ideally, this CD should be cheaper, but ten bucks isn't too bad nowadays, especially if the quality of the songs is this good.

Basically, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs are another of those critically hyped hip New York bands that sound like other bands. That's not a bad thing, considering how modern rock needs more acts that are fun and just plain sound good. If that means borrowing from the past, I'm all for it... for the meantime. The Yeah Yeah Yeahs are to punk-era Patti Smith as the Strokes are to the Velvet Underground, and the YYY's pull a lot of other influences together as well. My favorite cut, "Miles Away" builds up and up until it seems like it taps into the heart of rock and roll, and the cool "Art Star" combines poppy "do do doots" with primal screams and drone lyrics. Both songs are as good as anything I've heard from the New York kids so far, and good reasons to spend 10 dollars. "Mystery Girl" feels like a Broadway show tune disguised as a punk smash-and-grab, which is cool with me also. "Bang" doesn't do too much for me, but its smarmy and sexy lyrics make Karen-O seem a lot like a garage rock Patti Smith, and "Our Time" is a straightforward sarcastic rock ballad with some good points.

5.0 out of 5 stars YYY, Jan 20 2003
This review is from: Yeah Yeah Yeahs (Audio CD)
I heard about YYY from two guys at school. One raves about Karen O being so hot and talented. The other raves on the songs. So I looked 'em up.

One thing I recommend: DON'T BUY THIS! EP's ARE A WASTE OF MONEY!

You can pull this entire EP set off the piolet p2p program from download.com. You will also find one or two live tracks, plus "Graveyard" and "Machine" from their single.

Not to say this is a terrible collection of course.

1. Bang - It takes some getting used to. Don't judge them on the unorthodox stylings of this song.
2. Mystery Girl - This is the most talented of the 5 tracks. Rollingstone said once that Karen O's frequent use of the word "yeah" is never wasted. Listen to this one and you'll hear it - The "yeahs" aren't just thrown in
3. Art Star - Also takes some getting used to. It opens like a pop song, with the best hook on the disc, then rips into some hardcore blister, back to pop song...do do dodo doot do do doot do...
4. Miles Away - Clear cut punk. This track uses a brilliant slide technique on the guitar to pump up the intensity of the two minutes.
5. Our Time - This one's actually kind of moving. It's not spiritual or anything, but the chorus rythms really get to you

In summary:
- Don't buy this, ep's are a waste of money.
- Download the songs from piolet. you can find piolet software (free) on download.com.
- YYY is a great band.
- Fabulous material here
