3.0 out of 5 stars not bad , has some very funny moments
this movie isn't too bad.there are a couple of very funny moments in
the movie.i also liked the energy level of the film.it was very
high.the movie is entertaining for the most part.the only things i
didn't like,is that i felt Steve Martin over exaggerated his
expressions and action in some of the physical comedy.i also thought
the "inspirational"...

1.0 out of 5 stars A dreadful monstrosity which reared its stinky head from infernal cesspool, Oct 26 2010

This horrific travesty of a family movie is a veritable proof that the efforts of controlled birth societies are not wasted: a normal person who watches this eyesore of a picture will want to have nothing to do with big family, or God forbid, to start one.
Here is the lowdown: a dancing monkey of a father, a wussy type, has a large family of 12, who totally disrespect him and make the family life look like hell on earth. Whenever he says something, just watch the expression of their faces: they show either contempt, or outward mockery. Smiles are feigned, dialogs are labored and unnatural, and it is clear that there is no love in this family -- apparently, they hate one another's guts.

This is such a contrast with the beautiful book with the same title, by Gilbreths, which has totally different spirit.

the "inspirational" theme music was a bit overpowering at times.but
these are just small complaints.otherwise,it's a pretty good movie.i
thought the kids all did a good job acting.i really like Bonnie Hunt, who
played the wife and mother.i thought she was a standout in the movie.i
did think the ending was predictable, but i'm sure that's by design.with
most movies of this genre, you usually know how things will end up.
after the movie ended,i felt satisfied that i had got my money's
worth, which is more than can be said for many movies.i give "Cheaper by
the Dozen" a strong 3/5

2.0 out of 5 stars An OK movie with some throw backs., Mar 27 2006
This review is from: Cheaper By the Dozen 03 (DVD)
This film is a remake of the 1953 film along with a movie based on the book. It isn't as good as it could have been; they had an oppurtunity to make a great film but they didn't execute as well as they could have.

The story basically goes that a family with 12 children lives in the countryside. When the father gets a coaching job in Chicago the family moves there, but the children are hesitant and angry to go. The rest mostly consists of the children being angry and the mother going on a trip touring a book called Cheaper by the Dozen.

This film is not at all great and, in my opinion, not above average. Why? Well, here's reason number one. Hilary Duff. She wrecked the movie with her terrible acting (although she could have acted a TON better,) and her SUPER ANNOYING 'fashion guru' act. She keeps on making lame mentions to fashion and make up, etc. It is really, really annoying and takes away from the film.

The second is the script. There are some bad lines (i.e. when Steve Martin is hanging from the chandelier,) and it can just make the viewer cringe. I cannot say how bad the script is sometimes. When the kids are soaking Hank's underwear in meat, I don't think the kid (if he was logical and actually knew anything about hockey,) would use an EASTON STICK to soak his underwear in meat.

I do not recommend this film, although little kids may enjoy it. They could have done so much better on the film, and I'm skipping CBTD 2.

2.0 out of 5 stars Heavy Handed, Tired Jokes, July 19 2004

Of course, Steve Martin is a joy to watch in almost anything, and I was expecting a reprisal of his role in the wonderful PARENTHOOD. Sadly, this was not. I do not think he makes a believable football coach.

But most of all, I was bored to tears and a little disgusted by kids bratty behavior being the centerpiece of the jokes. If you come from a large family, or know someone who does, you know that discipline is the cornerstone of that many people living together. I find it incredibly hard to believe that a parent of so many offspring would calmly accept or condone any of their behavior. I wanted to spank all twelve of them (and the parents for letting them get away with it).

Waste of talent, insult to parents who can cope, and just plain bothersome. You might stay awake for the first hour, but then it gets embarassing. So give into your urges and take a nap. Remember Clifton Webb.

4.0 out of 5 stars 12 kids, lots of laughs and lots of trouble!!!!, July 14 2004

This movie was hilarious!! I really enjoyed it. The movie is about a family who deals with change when both parents decide to pursue their career dreams, and even more chaos ensues. You have a bunch of children who don't want to move, leave their school and friends, getting used to new schools, and playing major pranks on each other and on a boyfriend. You have one child who feels like an outsider, but the other siblings do really love him. Years ago this couple only wanted 8 children, but when they had a set of twins, decided to go for an even number. So they ended up with 12. You have one child who is a fashion person, very into her looks, make up and clothing. The oldest child has moved out, has her own life, and is trying to get her family to understand that. She is dating her boyfriend who is an actor her siblings don't like.

The scene that is so funny and I kept watching over and over and over again was the scene when the dog attacks the boyfriend whose shorts were soaked in meat. He is grabbing the floor and his screams reach a falsetto that just had me laughing and crying so hard. I love that scene!!!! Then he leaves the house and is chased by more dogs and has to jump in his car. What a riot!!!!

The story is ultimately about finding a happy medium, and deciding what is more important. Career or family. It is possible to have both, but at what costs? This movie is fun for the entire family to watch.

2.0 out of 5 stars You could find better family movies, July 13 2004
This review is from: Cheaper By the Dozen 03 (DVD)
Cheaper by the Dozen is a hokey, predictable film with very few laughs. The kids generally don't come across as cute and, unless you are a kid, watching their tired antics and their efforts to "outsmart" the adults gets boring pretty quickly.

The one enjoyable thing about this movie is Steve Martin. Still, I wouldn't recommend watching the movie because of him; he doesn't have good material to work with. If you want a great Steve Martin film that centers on family life and raising children, watch Parenthood.
