Gerber 09841 Diamond Knife Sharpener

I ordered this as an alternative to packing around a large sharpening stone when I am camping or hiking.

The sharpener is about the size of a pen, very light, and the stone extends from the metal casing and tightened into place.
It has a flat side for straight blades, a rounded edge for serrated blades, as well as a groove for sharpening fish hooks.

I am far from an expert knife sharpener, but would consider myself competent with a normal sharpening stone.
It was very tricky to figure out the proper/ergonomic way to use this to sharpen a knife.
No literature came with the tool and I could not find any on the Gerber site either.
I ended up watching a youtube video of a competing product to figure out the way to use this one properly.
Lack of experience with this type of sharpener is certainly a contributing factor to my difficulties, and other may not have the same issue.

That being said, once I figured out how to use it, it puts an awesome edge on both a straight and serrated blade.
It is not very aggressive and would take a long time to repair a badly damaged blade, but does a great job while taking off very little material from a maintained blade.

Being a Diamond sharpener it tends to put on a fine edge and so you may find it dulls faster, but it quickly puts a razor sharp edge back on, and without needing to wet it.

A great lightweight field tool that gets the job done and at a reasonable price, but is not even close to a replacement for a good dual sided sharpening stone.

This item is a must have if you go outdoor or use your knife for your job...

This sharpener is really portable (size of a normal pen) and has a retractable diamond coated rod.

It has some indents into the rod so you can sharpen normal blades (flat part), serrated blades (round part) and even fishing hooks (track part).

Pros:
Really does a great job on serrated blades... I was never able to sharpen my serrated blades with a normal sharpening stone.
Portability makes it ideal for you everyday carry in your car, suitcase, even on yourself...

Cons: It's pretty hard to keep the good angle (25 or 30) on the blade, because it's a rod. But maybe with practice, i'll be able to master it.

At this price, it's a must have, if you don't own one...

I have 2 of these small sharpeners and love them, super small and work awesome. i would buy them again for sure and i know i would to get on as a gift lol.

This diamond knife sharpener has been of use several times in the past few months. I am happy with the quality and durability of this product. I do wish the handle was a little thicker but that is not a deal breaker for me. It is easy to transport and a good value. There is a flat edge for straight edge knives (which is what I use it for, I also use it for an axe) that works well and a curved edge for serrated blades which I have never used. All in all a handy, portable and well made knife sharpener.

This product is good quality, but a little difficult to use until you learn how to. But like all Gerber products it is a quality product!

I used it once and the "Diamond" coating peeled right off! Don't waste your money on this sharpener, buy a good one instead!

This slick little sharpener can put an acceptable edge on steel in a very short time. The product is very solid and heavy, with no play when fully extended. Because it's so heavy, it now lives in my pocket and, should the need ever arise, should serve as a handy, legal, nonthreatening kubotan for self-defense.

this will put an edge on a blade but in a very rough way. It is ok if it is all you have to use because stones are so heavy and require oil, etc.

I bought this as a quick edge sharpener to compliment my usual blade maintenance. I was under-impressed at how it handled my EDC (which isn't a premium steel 8Cr13MoV). I wasn't looking for a sharpener, just something to touch-up the edge between full sharpens. This hardly did a thing. So I tried it on another knife made of very soft 420SS. Nope.

I think it's more useful as a kitchen knife sidekick. I'm sure it's would do a fine job on a good blade if used once a week. The name is "sharpener" but it's really just a honing rod.

One thing to note, if you have a serrated blade (veff serrations, bread knives, etc) then this might be your best option. Take about 85 hours of your free time to see results though.

Two stars on performance but for the low price, I'm bumping it up to 3 stars.

Gave this a 3 star revue not because it wont do the job but because I haven't yet really put it to the test. It seems very good but has no instructions with it so I dont know if you need to use any lubrication or just use it dry. Something the manufacturer could put on the card for no cost!!
