3.0 out of 5 stars An Enjoyable, But Overrated "Aloha"
"Aloha From Hawaii" has some classic moments, particularly Elvis Presley's definitive rendition of "An American Trilogy." However, this is not among Presley's best concerts. Though he looks and sounds great, Elvis' performance lacks the passion and humor so evident in "The 1968 Comeback Special" and "That's the Way It Is." Still,...

5.0 out of 5 stars slice of history made good,
By A Customer
This review is from: Elvis - Aloha From Hawaii: Deluxe Edition (2DVD) (DVD)The re-mastering of this slice of history finally does the landmark concert justice. The quality of the picture is excellent considering the age of the concerts and the re-cutting of the camera angles works better than the dated looking original. The sound quality is miles better than previously releases but as a bit of a hi fi buff I think it could have been better still. DTS always souns better than Dolby Digital in my view and it would have been nice to have had the sound in this encoding system. I also felt tat there could have been a better spread of instrumentsacross the sound stage as the drums and lead guitar tend to be on top of each other centrally. Still minor gripes really as the sound is full and deep and Elvis's voice and piano in particular sound great.
I did read that someone slagged off the DVD for content but I would suggest you read the contents list before you buy as it is quite clear whats contained!
The Elvis arrival section is interesting to the fan to see EP relaxed and showing how much respect he had for the fans particularly when he clearly ignores Col Parker and continues tomeet and greet - shame he didn't ignore Parker more often!.
The rehersal show looks and sounds great and captures Elvis in a more relaxed mood than the actual event. I think several versions of songs here are better than on the actual broadcast.
The main event is just great.Elvis is nervous to start with but soon gets in to his stride and sings well throughout. Some benchmark versions of songs are contained in this set.
The after concert footage is interesting to view to see whta a professional Elvis was and also how knackered he was! I was only surprised how few expletives there were. Nice version of Early Morning Rain in particular.
Original broadcast is contained as well for historical content although once you've seent he updated concerts in their entirety you probably wont watch this again.
This is all about the two concerts and they are presented here in great picture and sound quality. For Elvis fans the extras are great. For non Elvis fans check the contents before buying and I am sure you will not be disappointed withn the quality of the package or performances.
A landmark release.

This review is from: Elvis - Aloha From Hawaii: Deluxe Edition (2DVD) (DVD)eLVIS INVOKES PASSION IN HIS PERFORMANCE AND THE BAND AND ORCHESTRA COMPLIMENT HIS MASTERFUL PRESENTATION. tHE SOUND AND PICTURE QUALITY ARE EXCELLENT! tHE DVD ENABLES ONE TO VIEW THE COLORFUL SPLENDOR OF THE SHOW AS WELL AS THE EXQUSITE BEAUTY OF HAWAII. tHE FULL ARRIVAL SEQUENCE HOWEVER (17 MIN) SHOULD HAVE BEEN EDITED AS ORIGINALLY BROADCAST BEFORE EACH OF THE SHOWS AND INCLUDED ON A DIFFERENT SECTION ON THE DISCS. tHE ONE MAJOR FLAW IS THE LACK OF QUALITY PHOTOS ON THE BOOKLET. iN THIS DAY AND TIME, THERE IS NO EXCUSE FOR THIS. jAPAN OFFERED HIGH QUALITY BOOKLETS ALONG WITH THE SONG LYRICS ON THEIR ALBUMS BACK IN THE 70'S! ASIDE FROM THIS, THE PACKAGE IS A GREAT EXAMPLE OF A TRULY TALENTED ENTERTAINER.
5.0 out of 5 stars WOW,
This review is from: Elvis - Aloha From Hawaii: Deluxe Edition (2DVD) (DVD)Ignore the above AMAZON DISCRIPTION, all songs are here. I have got to say this is probably without a doubt the best ELVIS DVD, along with the '68 special that we've had. The 1/12/73 concert is great and with the different camera angels is more exciting. The special itself, the show is show completely unedited and with some different camera angels and most of the split screen gone. Also we get the after show recordings, where Elvis recorded songs to be inserted in the US showing of the special. The the actual special with inserted songs, split screens and all is presented. If that's not enough there's a booklet with pictures and information about the recordings. The only complaint is why is Elvis not on the cover?
5.0 out of 5 stars Aloha DVD is great but sadly, Elvis' performance is not,
This review is from: Elvis - Aloha From Hawaii: Deluxe Edition (2DVD) (DVD)Buy this DVD only for historical and sentimental reasons.
I was 10 years old, living in Spain and heard/saw Elvis for the first time when the concert was televised via satellite in our B&W TV. But unfortunately, I think I fell asleep after the 4th song.
Anyway, after I became a fan and more familiar with all his work, I have realised that this concert does not really represent Elvis at his best. Indeed it was a big production etc... but the selections of the first songs were boring and too slow. No wonder I fell asleep back then.
It is a great DVD if you want to see a disoriented Elvis arriving and strangely ignoring the greeting dancing woman (funny)...or the rehearsel concert in where he appears tired and without makeup... and finally, it is a great DVD because it has the concerts in their entire forms, it has great sound and great color ... a huge improvement from my old spanish B&W TV.
5.0 out of 5 stars Aloha, that's the way it should be!,
This review is from: Elvis - Aloha From Hawaii: Deluxe Edition (2DVD) (DVD)I was only three years old when Elvis died, and the only television broadcasting network in Norway in those days, in rerun gave us the Aloha from Hawaii-concert. Music to me up until that day was my mother's lullabye at bedtime, but after Elvis' appearance in his shiny white suit and stunning vocal capacity, I became a true fan of his talent and music. For starters, I have just seen the arrival scene, the rehearsal concert, and six of the first tunes of the 'real' aloha-show from the 'Aloha from Hawaii deluxe edition'-dvd. It's only a few hours since I've got my greedy hands on the deluxe version here in Norway. My review must be read in that perspective.
The arrival scene is very 'bootleg', with the camera bouncing around here and there, giving the impression this is a homemade video. At first dissapointing, but then you feel this gives a closeness which the edited show couldn't give. Hey, I feel I'm there waiting for the chopper to land, and the King to take his first steps into television and music history! And at the same time it builds up your expectations.
With the 'That's the way it is'-dvd somehow dissapointing when it comes to soundquality, the 'deluxe edition' is breathtaking! I felt like a goose in very cold weather, if you know what I mean. In other words, the way Elvis sounding if the concert was held the 12. of January 2004 instead of 1973! But if possible, what's even more interesting is the use of 'new' camera-angles. Now you can see Elvis from the best angles at all time. A true delight for everyone to see!
Now, this is written in the context of being a Elvis fan, if you're a casual fan, a dvd-set with almost three identical concerts can be to much. Of course, Elvis sings a little different in some of the songs on the rehearsal. For example, Elvis sings 'You gave me a mountain' much greater on the broadcasted show than on the rehearsal. My point is, you have to be a real fan to enjoy the small details. But on the other hand, instead of buying the regular Aloha from Hawaii on dvd, you can get so much more with this one, at a cost you can afford. This is something you can enjoy in years to come!
5.0 out of 5 stars elvis dvd wonderful,
This review is from: Elvis - Aloha From Hawaii: Deluxe Edition (2DVD) (DVD)I have just purchased the new Elvis Aloha from Hawaii dvd it was wonderful. While I know it isnt Elvis at his absolute greatest it still brought home to me why he is still called "The King". Don't compare it to earlier concerts just watch and watch you will see many moving, funny and magnificant moments to satisfy any true Elvis fan. Seeing the three versions of the concerts back to back is really interesting and I see something new each time I view them. Elvis you are The King!!!
5.0 out of 5 stars SIMPLY AWESOME!,
This review is from: Elvis - Aloha From Hawaii: Deluxe Edition (2DVD) (DVD)What can I say that hasn't already been said about this DVD Deluxe Edition???? It's simply Elvis at his best! You get the complete, and unseen until now, footage of Elvis's arrival in Hawaii and the rehearsal show on January 12, 1973 and the absolutely complete January 14, 1973 concert that has been upgraded with new sound and picture and the footage of the songs done after the actual special were a nice touch. The original 1973 version of the television special is included for "historical purposes"......and I actually enjoyed seeing it again even though I've seen it hundreds of times.....
This is one awesome DVD box set that you do not want to miss! GET IT NOW!
5.0 out of 5 stars Masterful reissue,
This review is from: Elvis - Aloha From Hawaii: Deluxe Edition (2DVD) (DVD)I needed to make a fast decision about purchasing either the new issue of the "TV Special" or "Aloha." Determined to pay cash, I decided to go with the less expensive one. (Next week I'll shell out for the '68 extravaganza). The earlier NBC Special was far more exciting; had no restrained performances. And viewing Chapter One of the Hawaii show, featuring the uncut welcoming party to Elvis, made me wonder if I should have bought the "Comeback" show first: interesting and fun, but I coulda lived without it.
It was the alternate Hawaii show, the "just in case" show [meaning if something went wrong technically on the global telecast they had something to run with], which really makes the (reasonable) price almost irrelevant: it's Elvis doing great versions of his set songs and practically without choreography! Indeed, it's been written, that the '73 producer asked Elvis to be more animated than he had seen here and there, and on the first show Presley does not concede to such wishes - he simply stands and delivers, presumptively because he wanted to conserve energy. What we get are tremendous versions of "You Gave Me a Mountain", "Steamroller Blues", "Something", and on and on. This Chapter is worth the price of this DVD.
Another section has Elvis performing "insert" numbers, all but one from "Blue Hawaii". He couldn't have been thrilled with having to stand in place and sing old soundtrack tunes, but his professionalism is notable. Nothing for a time capsule, but very entertaining.
Ofcourse the big show is next and we are treated to a complete reworking of the tapes, concentrating on Elvis with the original multi-screen stuff outa there. Just like in the recent reworked "That's The Way It Is" video, this approach is what the fans really want.
I agree with what critics and fans have said regarding the laid back, somewhat tired renditions, but let's get real: here's Elvis, bouncing off a long airplane flight, onto a stage knowing he's got two full shows to do, plus extra filler, and the whole deal is to be viewed by an astronomical number of people. He paced himself beautifully.
4.0 out of 5 stars Great Sound, Great Picture!,
This review is from: Elvis - Aloha From Hawaii: Deluxe Edition (2DVD) (DVD)If you are an Elvis fan, this 2 DVD set is one that needs to be in your collection. Capturing the historic Hawaii concert, the DVD brings home the sights and sounds in terrific 5.1 Digital sound and truly wonderful pictures. Not only does it provide the original USA broadcast of the 1973 concert, it also has the original feed that was shown live to most of the world (the US did not see it until weeks later). Also provided is the rehersal show the night before and raw video of Elvis arriving to greet fans. The reason to buy the package, though, is the sound. It is obvious that a reat deal of care went into presenting the music in the 2 DVDs. A great job is also done with recreating the original live show, using the original video, which looks like it could have been shot this year. For fans of Presley or those who have an appreciation for the history of rock, this is one worth owning.
5.0 out of 5 stars Elvis' spectacular Aloha from Hawaii concert!,
This review is from: Elvis - Aloha From Hawaii: Deluxe Edition (2DVD) (DVD)The picture quality and sound are excellent; second only to his performance. All available footage is presented from the original broadcast version through the complete rehearsal concert and a newly re edited version. It also offers the complete arrival footage. However, I do think that it would have been more entertaining to edit the arrival footage before each of the concerts and then offer the full 17 minute arrival sequence separately if one wishes to view the entire arrival.I also feel that the "delux" booklet ought to have contained far better Quality photos then what is offered. A few of the photos look worse than the typical bootleg versions. Japan offered high quality pictures with song lyrics with their LP releases 20 years ago! It is a shame BMG/RCA has chosen to skimp on the budget; their is absolutely no reason for bad quality photos. The sound and DVD picture quality is excellent and the Aloha delux set makes for a wonderful gift.
