Okay-- this is the movie on 1 disc ... no extras ... that's it. Why did they bother? You can still buy the 2-disc edition and get all the extras. Very confusing marketing move. I'd also like to see the complete 260 minute version.

a majestic, beautifully filmed epic, Juil 15 2004
This film is often compared with the 1961 "King of Kings", and "Jesus of Nazareth", but this one is by far my favorite of the three, because of the exquisite beauty of it, and Max von Sydow's powerful portrayal of Jesus; his performance has a strength and boldness that is lacking in the other two, and therefore for me much more believable. Sydow was only known to fans of Ingmar Bergman's films at the time, having starred in the Swedish director's "The Seventh Seal" among others, and was a surprise choice to play Jesus, and a good one. He does a marvelous job, and I especially like the scene after Lazarus has died...it is brilliant, and very moving.George Stevens' vision of the story has a stark majesty, and is taken at a leisurely pace; it is also quite verbal, with some of the major events in the gospels not pictured, but spoken of instead. Filmed in Arizona and Utah, the cinematography by Loyal Griggs, who took over from William Mellor when Mellor passed away during filming, is glorious. There are scenes that have the composition and balance a fine painting, with extraordinary detail, often framed by doorways or windows, and it's a film I never tire of just looking at. Graphic artists should make a point to see this film, as there is much that can be learned from it. Alfred Newman also wrote a lovely score (with a little help from G. F. Handel) which adds to the aesthetic appeal of this film. In the huge star-studded cast, some performances are truly memorable, like Claude Rains as a bitter and devious Herod, and Jose Ferrer excellent as his son Herod Antipas; Charlton Heston's ferocious, wild-man John the Baptist is impassioned and perhaps more like the actual Baptist than some of the tamer portrayals. With its huge budget (over 20 million in 1965 dollars) it was a critical and commercial failure when it was released, but it has had a long life, and is being watched today while some successful films of the mid-'60s quite forgotten, and will continue to be appreciated by everyone who likes Bible epics. It was however, nominated for 4 Academy Awards: Best Art Direction/Set Decoration, Color Cinematography, Costume Design, and Original Score, losing out in all those categories to "Doctor Zhivago". There is "artistic license" taken with the story, but overall, it is a reverential, fairly accurate telling. Total running time is 196 minutes.

the films not great but this is a beautifully acted christ, Avril 22 2004
Par Un client
this film has an absolutely beautiful, poignant performance from max von sydow as christ.more than robert powell, defoe or clavell von sydow gives us a poetic, highly nuanced performance as a human, sensatively emapthetic christ. von sydow does more with facial expressions, his eyes and gestures than defoe did with his writhing or clavell did with his masochism. powell came close but the quintessental acting role of christ belongs to von sydow. the film itself has an abundance of flaws, most notably all the star cameos, but watch it for sydow

The Longest Story Ever Told, Avril 12 2004
Having seen this movie twice now on TCM (in widescreen, no less), I still found my attention wandering away from the characters and towards the magnificent scenery. George Stevens last film was considered the biggest box office flop in Hollywood history until "Heaven's Gate" came out in 1980. And no wonder, while Max Von Sydow is fine as Jesus of Nazareth, the supporting cast and cameo appearences run the gamut from inspired (Ed Wynn as an blind old man) to the insane (John Wayne as a thoughtful Roman centurian). At times, this film seems more like a stylized retelling, rather than a faithful account. Take for example the scene of Jesus riding into Jeruselam on a donkey. Notice how nearly everyone is wearing spotless white garments. I guess the laundromat was just off camera. But the major problem is the elephant-walk pacing of the film. It simply takes way too long to tell it's story, despite how great it is. However, if there is a standout, it's the incredable scenery shot in perfect color hues and tones. What's even more inspired is that the film was shot on location in the American southwest. The mountains in the backgroud actually augment the "more than human" atmosphere that is the life of Jesus. So, while it takes forever to get there, we at least get to take the scenic route.

Greatest Portrayal of Jesus, Avril 12 2004
Par Un client
This is a great companion to "The Passion of the Christ" that focuses on the teachings and man that was Jesus Christ. Max von Sydow's Jesus has a commanding presence that is missing in the other portrayals. His voice can boom with the voice of God when it wants to, and can also grow soft and soothing. His appearance is also more believable than the surfer dude Christ of "King of Kings," or the waif-like, wimp that was "Jesus of Nazerath." Von Sydow tows the line between a carpenter who is afraid of his power in some places, and God on earth, who has the ability to perform miracles and move the masses. A criticism of this movie is all the cameos that take place, but that's rubbish. It doesn't affect the movie at all, mostly becasue the cameos are not distracting on account that the actors are not as recognizeable in this day and age. Charlton Hesston gives the definitive John the Baptist, intimidating, slightly mad, but ultimately a mysterious tool of God calling out to Herod even after death. The scenery and music is also breathtaking, and if you're not moved by this movie there is something wrong with you. Watch this movie after "The Passion." The Greatest Story Ever Told is the best portrayal of Jesus and a deserves more credit for being ahead of it's time.

Almost as Good as Jesus of Nazareth!, Avril 11 2004
I watched The Greatest Story Ever Told today on Easter Sunday on Turner Classic Movies, Jesus of Nazareth is still my favorite movie about Jesus, I love that version and think it's the greatest movie I have seen about Jesus but I liked The Greatest Story Ever Told too which is my second favorite movie about Jesus and I think Max Van Sydow was very good as Jesus and Charlton Heston was very good as John the Baptist and the only thing that keeps this from being the greatest movie about Jesus is that too many of the big name actors they used for cameo appearances were miscast. I have this movie on tape I bought the two video set sometimes in the 1980s but unfortunately it's just in the cropped pan and scan fullscreen format so today when The Greatest Story Ever told was shown on TCM in widescreen I taped it and I will buy the movie on widescreen DVD someday but first I plan on buying Jesus of Nazareth on DVD first.

MY FAVORITE TREATMENT OF THE LIFE OF JESUS, Avril 9 2004
Par Un client
I prefer this movie to the garish, strident, and overdone Jesus of Nazareth precisely because of its understated and almost minimalist presentation. This is an admirable rarity in Old/New Testament films, many of which strain so much for the pretentious "Biblical" scope that they totally sacrifice their humanity. One particular scene I found thoroughly original, even brilliant: Pilate's asking Jesus, "What is truth?" Here, Telly Savalas as Pilate delivers up the line rhetorically, not ranting like his counterpart in J of N. The exchanges between the great Claude Rains (Herod) and the Magi are also excellent. There is humor as well, such as Pilate and Herod Antippas sizing each other up; John the Baptist (Charlton Heston) dunking Herod's soldiers in the Jordan bidding them to "repent"; and several other instances. The movie is filled with many, many likewise appealing vignettes. Not that The Greatest Story Ever Told has no flaws; there are quite a few. But it does hold up well after almost forty years. This DVD includes fascinating behind-the-scenes features and interviews. I highly recommend this movie.

It's my turn again, Mars 10 2004
Par Un client
I recently wrote a review on Jesus Of Nazareth. Shamefully though a pitiful review of a spectacular and wonderful mini series. I started off mentioning The Greatest Story Ever Told as the definitive Christ movie til I saw Jesus Of Nazareth. But the truth is I love both these films with equal passion.I can't beleive when I read people love one but revile the other. Both of these shows offer intense drama, marvelous backdrops, tear jerking moments, and way of penetrating into the essence of your very being. But credit must be given where it is due. I find The Greatest Story Ever Told to be the superior DVD presentation. The bonus features disc is informative and entertaining. The Widescreen format is breathtaking. I know Jesus Of Nazareth was filmed for tv,but I do beleive if they pulled back far enough from the presented picture we would get a somewhat panoramic picture. The Greatest Story Ever Told is a wonderful treasure to own.

Hollywood tells story of Jesus with stars and cameos., Mars 8 2004
To be perfectly honest, I prefer JESUS OF NAZARETH (1977). I have tried three times to get into this version with Max von Sydow as "Jesus" in The Greatest Story Ever Told and that it is and I think it was wonderul for the people of 1965, that needed to see a film like this. But tweleve years later, "Jesus Of Nazareth" (1977), a television mini-series was broadcast with Robert Powell as "Jesus". It was so much more accurate and so emotional. But now I will sit through 3 hours and 18 minutes of The Greatest Story Ever Told. Here it my review. The locations look like Arizona. I enjoyed the beautiful locations and soundstage sets. So many actors. So many familar faces. I dare not name them all here, but a few. Jose Ferrer, Charlton heston, Donald Pleasance, David McCullum, Telly Savalas, Roddy McDowall, Sal Mineo, Jamie Farr, Karen Black, Shelley Winters, Ed Wynn, Martin Landau, David Hedison, Sidney Poitier and John Wayne. Many cameo appearances. There are alot of gentile actors in the cast. Jesus at the Grand Canyon? Sometimes a littlee Hollywood magnificence is good for a film. VHS version includes Overture, Intermission, Entr'acte, Exit music. I prefer to see Max von Sydow as "Father Merrin" in THE EXORCIST (1973).
