3.0 out of 5 stars Leader in "living dead" genre
I enjoy watching zombie movies and I'd heard a lot about this one before I managed to get my hands on a copy. Some people had told me it was a classic of low budget filmmaking, others had warned me it was an absolute steaming pile of zombie pap. Now, having finally watched it, I don't think it's either of these things.

Zombie(Zombie Flesh Eaters, as it is known in England)is one of the better zombie films. When i first heard about this film i was desparate to see it because it was banned for 16 years in England, and this made me think that it would be very gory.
Then about five Months ago saw it a shop for a very cheap price and straight away i bought it. And as soon as watched it thought it was excellent, the eye piercing sceene alone is very realistic and brilliant. This film only comes second to Day of the Dead. But beware the two sequels they are absolutely awful. If you like zombie films i recomend, City of the Living Dead, House by the Cemetary, Dawn of the Dead, Day of the Dead, Dead Alive and The Beyond.

The acting is bland in general, with the exception of veteran British actor Richard Johnson (looking a bit out of place, but having a great time hamming it up as the slightly mad Dr. Menard) and smirky Roger Moore look-alike Ian McCulloch. Al Cliver isn't too bad as a tough-guy tourist caught up in the zombie infestation, Tisa Farrow (yes, that's Mia's little sis) drifts through much of the movie looking distant and dazed, and Auretta Gay (they must have given her a hard time at school) takes her top off a lot but spends the rest of the time either over- or under-acting.

The plot isn't much to speak of but it holds the attention, and considering the directors other horror movies, it's a miracle there actually is one. The ending annoyingly blunts any disturbing edge the film may have built up towards the end, and drags the movie fully into the realm of cheesiness. The lack of enough real tension and suspense among the pumping blood, punctured eyeballs and blazing gunfire is pretty disappointing too. That said, the action scenes are genuinely exciting (despite being kinda slow in coming) and the climatic sequence in Dr. Menard's hospital with the invading zombies vs. humans is quite enjoyable.

Overall, I found that all this was not quite as horrifying as reputation suggests, probably because of it's age, lack of tension, or my stamina to being scared/disgusted. The memorable parts a battle between a zombie and a shark, and a graphic tracheotomy, (to name just two) easily make it worth the rental, plus some good special effects really caught my interest. Just don't expect much intelligence here that you'd find in Romero's undead flicks. On the whole, it's not brilliant, but it fits respectfully in this genre.

5.0 out of 5 stars Zombi 2, Mar 8 2005

this is an ode to all aspiring filmmakers because its concept was, and still is, so easy to realize. for any videogame lover, zombie is a must see. james bond never dealt with such filth on his tropical vacations. the voodoo element adds to the fear factor, not to mention the live worms crawling out of the zombie's eyes as they torment the camera. some very disgusing motifs dealing with eyes. if you are able to keep yours open for long enough you will be able to see the zombies take over NYC.

When I first bought this movie I was hyped about it. Then I started reading reviews saying that it was not that great of a movie. When I recieved it and started watching it..To my surprise it was much better than people said! The zombies looks so realistic in this movie..it is crazy! The gore is amazing..this is one horror film that sacres me. The music is unbelievable! I still have that theme coming in my head from time to time..If you enojoy italian horror and zombies then this is a treat for you! Watch it in the dark...alone..it will scare you.

2.0 out of 5 stars Thanks alot all you fan boyz out there, Jan 4 2006

This review is from: Zombi 2 (DVD)
Thanks to this web page, and all of the fans of this movie, i rushed out and spent 40 dollars on the 2 disc 25th anniversary edition of this film.
Needless to say, i was VERY DISAPPOINTED...how anyone can compare this work with the work of the zombie genius George Romero is beyond me. I will admit, some of the gory scene's made the film worth watching. BUT COME ON, ALL THE ZOMBIE KILLS WERE PEOPLE THAT JUST STOOD THERE AND DIED...very predictable, and very boring. DAWN OF THE DEAD c. 1970's is still the all time Lord of Zombie movies....Zombi 2 is, like I said, does have some redeeming features, but on the whole, i suggest anyone wanting to buy this disc, RENT Zombi 2 first.

4.0 out of 5 stars Just what you'd expect from an old italian gore hound, Nov 17 2011
This review is from: Zombie (DVD)
personally i was very impressed with this italian made zombie movie. I personally havent been the biggest fan of italian horror in the past, despite all the great reviews and attention they get on the horror scene. I've havent seen a whole lot but suspiria and the beyond both in mind did not live up to their hype. Zombie however definatly left me satisfied. There you can definatly see Fulci's style in "zombie" after watching the beyond. He has his own style of music that he plays in the background and the pacing is also similar, the difference is that zombie delivered the goods and actually reached the climax i was waiting for. Also it helps that there is an awesome zombie vs shark scene that was shot amazingly well for how old it is, it puts most shark movies to shame. Also popular is the eye gouging scene that happens nice and slowly and looks incredably real. Through in plenty other scenes of zombie related gore in Fulcis wet and splattery style mixed with numorous other scenes of zombie related flesh ripping and blood shed and this definatly sticks out as an above average zombie adventure. Another thing i liked was the whole setting a look to the movie. there was a redish hue to the picture and was set on an island with all different kinds and colors of zombies, the red hue made everything look more grungy and the zombies looked truly discusting. This movie was revamped my confidence in italian horror and i definatly wont write off any directors from that area quite yet.

5.0 out of 5 stars Attention customers..., Dec 22 2006
This review is from: Zombi 2 (DVD)
A word of warning about the two Shriek Show editions of Zombi 2. The version from 2006 is cheaper, but it is cut. The more expensive version from 2004 is uncut. And the Blue Underground version (called Zombie, although it is the same movie) is also uncut.

Merry Christmas!

This is the anchorbay release, which is cut. Get the Blue underground release or the media-blasters release. Three stars for being cut. But five stars otherwise.

5.0 out of 5 stars Veritable choc du cinéma italien, Nov 19 2004
By
This review is from: Zombie (Widescreen) (DVD)
