This review is from: Star Trek: The Original Series - Season One (Remastered Edition) (DVD)
I was quite impressed with the mastering of this series, now beyond 40 Years... Plenty of time and effort has gone into this effort and it shows. Colors are vibrant, especially in High Def, truly an amazing experience, despite the fact that this set at 133 aspect ratio... Don't expect these to be in widescreen, read the packaging carefully. As well, all of the Special Effects, have been upgraded to 21st century technology. The effects are impressive to say the least and, in my opinion, enhance this gem. As well, with the spruced up effects, they have managed to maintain the original effects, intention. This is a HD-DVD combo, which means that the discs will work on both players, side A is HD DVD, side B is standard DVD. Both sides are remastered beautifully in Dolby 5.1 on DVD, Dolby True HD in Hi-Def. The extras are fabulous, especially with the technology, interactive menus, of the HD DVD format. 7 episodes feature behind the scenes commentary. Several extras, were already present with the previous box set, but the rest is definitely worth the look. Overall, it is pricey, but if you are a true fan of the series, definitely pick this jewel up

I love this series!,

Star Trek is my favorite T.V. series of all time. I'm so glad that they're finally releasing it in box sets. I avoided buying the previous releases because at $20 for each 2 episode disc, I would have felt more guilt than joy everytime I bought one. I feel bad for the people that purchased those. That was really a greedy money grubbing move that Paramount made. SOB's, It always really pissed me off. This box set is also too expensive, but they know we'll buy them. It's like health care. You have to have it, so they take advantage of you and charge as much as they possibly can, making sure that they can make themselves richer and richer at the expense of us, the common man.

Great Season,
This review is from: Star Trek: The Original Series - Season One (Remastered Edition) (DVD)
All trekees will love this special edition with its modernized general space effects. No damage done to the integrity of the original shows, and we are favoured with more realistic looking planets and Star Ship Enterprise. It is a lousy packing job, but that does not matter as the material in just so perfect. So you can improve slightly on a good thing, and they have with the shows. Go buy it trekee.

Star Trek 1,
This review is from: Star Trek: The Original Series - Season One (Remastered Edition) (DVD)
I was very impressed with the DVD's. Colors are vivid and clear. The only part I don't like is that we cannot choose to play all on the CD, have to choose the episodes one at a time, which I find tedious.

I recently examined a set of these DVDs, purchased by a friend. The quality is fine, and the enhancements are worth the expense. However, take note: for some reason, despite the product explanation to the contrary, there are NO English sub-titles included. There are French and Spanish sub-titles, and there is English closed-captioning, but the more easily readable, and less intrusive sub-titles in English are missing. This also applies to set 2. It will be interesting to see if set 3 corrects this oversite. This is all the more puzzling and annoying, as the earlier, un-enhanced versions of these DVDs do, indeed, have sub-titles in English.

Good Shows, Poor Packaging, Price Too High,

This review is from: Star Trek - The Original Series: Season 1 (DVD)
The content is as it always was, so if you liked the original Star Trek series, you will like these. We have been fans for years, and these old shows never seem to be out-of-date; as time passes, the issues that some of the shows depicted and examined are as relevant now as they were in the sixties. The video and sound quality are considerably improved over what one commonly sees on cable or satellite re-runs. However, the packaging leaves much to be desired. It seems that their folding plastic disc carrier is meant to come apart with repeated use, and the paper sleeve doesn't look too durable, either. Lastly, wherever you buy this package, you can't avoid paying the high price. It's unfortunate that Paramount sees fit to gouge customers repeatedly. Surely DVD technology will eventually be replaced, at which point they will likely release another over-priced package, if they even wait that long.

There's no pleasing some people... various "reviewers" are content to whine, complain and nit pick about packaging. The episodes in the ST:TOS box sets look FAR better than the TV re-runs, and the Dolby Digital audio is miles above the original Mono VHS soundtrack. You have to remember that this show is pushing 40 years old now. There's only so much the engineers can do to clean up the original source video and audio. The Okuda commentaries, bonus features and interactive menus are very well done, however the menus can be a little clumsy to navigate. That being said, you get used to them fairly quickly. The original TV previews for each week's episode are a nice touch. These sets are a little expensive, and the packaging isn't the best, but a couple of $1.99 Ikea CD-Wallets solves that issue. It's still FAR cheaper than buying the original 2-episode per DVD issues. |
