5.0 out of 5 stars This music reminds me so much of L.A.
I purchased this CD while I was on vacation in L.A. at Amoeba music, the BEST CD store in the world. Before I had heard from my friends that it was an amazing CD, and it is.

American Idiot 9.5/10 A good, self titled song that gets the listener hooked in.

Jesus of Suburbia 8/10 OK, this is definetly a good song which I listened to SO much in L.A., but it drags on so...

3.0 out of 5 stars Good Power Pop - not too much more...
Well-done melodic power pop matched by band members who suddenly are dressing (and using make-up) in a trendy fashion and making trendy videos... While I have nothing per say against this fairly calculated commercial approach, there is simply not to much beyond the surface here (as opposed to a Gnarls Barkley, Amy Winehouse, etc.).

For better power pop, go...

I purchased this CD while I was on vacation in L.A. at Amoeba music, the BEST CD store in the world. Before I had heard from my friends that it was an amazing CD, and it is.

American Idiot 9.5/10 A good, self titled song that gets the listener hooked in.

Jesus of Suburbia 8/10 OK, this is definetly a good song which I listened to SO much in L.A., but it drags on so long and gets a bit tired after a while.

Holiday 10/10 I LOVE THIS SONG! Really great lyrics and a good beat.

Blvd. of Broken Dreams 10/10 This song was #1 in America for 3 months! 3 months! Green Day just about clinched star status right there.

Are We the Waiting 7.5/10 A good chance for the listener to catch their breath. Overall it has great lyrics, but the song just doesn't feel like Green Day.

St. Jimmy 8/10 A good fast paced song. Kinda weird; who is St. Jimmy???

Give Me Novacaine 5/10 I don't like this song at all. There isn't much point to it at all.

She's A Rebel 9/10 I have a feeling this is Green Day's next big hit.

Extraordinary Girl 6/10 Pff... I just don't like this song. It doesn't make sense and it is really annoying.

Letterbomb 9/10 "Where have all the b*stards gone?" CLASSIC! A good song with some funny lyrics.

Wake Me Up When September Ends 7/10 They really messed this good song up with the TERRIBLE video, but I like it.

Homecoming 8.5/10 Another long song, but this time I like it. Some lyrics throw the song back but overall a good one.

Whatsername 5/10 Most likely a filler so there were 13 songs on it. It doesn't seem to want to decide whether it is a slow or a rock song. Don'tlikeitatall.

This is a must have album and is definetly one of the best CDs ever published!

BUY IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars dont bring them down, May 30 2006

This review is from: American Idiot (Audio CD)
K im tired of everyone bringing greenday down because of the whole "image" thing. Everyone in the history of music have depended on image some what. Kurt cobain went for the dirty, bum look, sex pistold the rough, punk look, now its greenday with the emo look. Besides that, this album offers an arangement of styles mixed with very, very political views. My favorite song is give me novacaine, because of the hooks and drmatic sound. the entire band has improves their wirting and performing skills to a great degree, theres even some guitar riffs which arent too common in greenday songs. All in all i feel this album lives up tot he hype and i worth grabbing.

8.2/10

5.0 out of 5 stars Punk Rock revived!, Oct 20 2005

After they released a greatest hits cd, I thought that it could only go down for Green Day. The day I heard American Idiot on the radio AND saw the video, I knew that punk rock was back, and its name was Green Day!
Bands like Sum 41 had done an okay job, and the Offspring tried following suit with a hits cd of their own (and don't even get me started with that sorry excuse for rock music by the name of Simple Plan). Green Day presents American Idiot, and they present that you are an idiot if you don't buy this album. Every song is worthy of being a single...the two rock opera tracks, "Jesus of Sububia" and "Homecoming", were put in the right places to help the flow of the album, and even tell a story, and a good one, at that.
Punk rock is out of the coma, and back in the mainstream, BABY!

5.0 out of 5 stars Pop rock at its finest, April 28 2005

Many of the complaints about American Idiot are in regard to how overplayed and annoying the singles are without actually saying much about the album in general. American Idiot is not a record that can be judged by the singles.

This album was crafted as a cohesive work; it isn't meant to just be thought of as a random collection of songs. I don't have a TV and don't listen to the radio very often so I can't attest the accusation of these songs being overplayed, but I know that I ordinarily would not be able to stand a song along the lines of Boulevard of Broken Dreams. However, while listening to the album, it's the perfect song to follow Holiday, which itself is the perfect song to follow the end of Jesus of Suburbia. There is a logical, musical, and lyrical progression from one song to the next through the entire album.

I'm somewhat privileged to live in the relatively media-free bubble that I do. I don't feel the need to defend my punk rock credibility by tearing down the pop rock band that was part of the punk scene over 10 years ago, and I'm not driven to buy into the hype surrounding whatever band is popular at the moment. My opinions of this record come from my experience of taking it home and sticking it in while I was washing dishes, and being completely amazed by the quality.

Also, the fact that I, an aging punk rocker, and my roommate, a jazz musician, both think that it's the best album of 2004 should say something.

4.0 out of 5 stars Impressive, Feb 23 2005
This review is from: American Idiot (Audio CD)
These guys have gotten a lot better since their last albums, which were a little too "pop" for me. This album on the other hand is pretty catchy. Everyone has (or should have) heard "American Idiot" and "Boulavard of Broken Dreams" before (they're constantly playing the music videos on MTV). But it's the massive 9-10 minute song "Jesus of Suburbia" that impresses me the most. Although it's not the best track, it manages to keep you entertained for the whole 9-10 minutes... not something a lot of bands can do. All in all this is a pertty damn good album, it's a little too slow for my taste, but still very good. Green Day fans should love this album!

5.0 out of 5 stars Nothing like what I expected, Dec 13 2004

This review is from: American Idiot (Audio CD)
I remember buying Dookie way back in '94. That album was great, but didn't have too much lasting appeal. After I sold it at a second hand record shop I never really payed much attention to Green Day. They fell way under the radar while at the same time maintaining a respectable audience, but it wasn't until this year that they evolved into genuinely gifted musicians. Green Day's American Idiot is a punk record, BUT it is more sophisticated than 90% of the punk bands out there right now. This one is melody-driven well constructed and expertly executed. They are much better musicians than they used to be, and much better musicians than anyone else in their genre. This is a record really worth paying for. Downloaders who didn't pay a red cent for this one really don't deserve to listen to it. I love this one and will for a long time. Congrats, Green Day, on your crowning achievment.

4.0 out of 5 stars welcome back..., Dec 10 2004

this is something i have been waiting for since 1994. Sure, Green Day has been consistent with ctachy music, but not since Dookie have i been completely knocked off my chair by a pwoerful sound that i heard in 'american ideot'. The album starts off wit a bang with the title track 'American Ideot', and takes us through a journey of music, politics and powerful lyrics from then on. The song really does set the tone for the rest of the album. As much as i do enjoy 'Boulevard of broken dreams', my next pic has got to be 'Jesus of Suburbia'. It reminds me of when iw as younger having to stand through about 5 different hymns with no break, just a 2 second progression into the next one. This song, with 5 differnt songs within it, is a montage of catchy beats and good melody-music. Finally, St. Jimmy. This brings back the old sound of Green Day. A fast paced, pure-punk sounding song. Enough said. I would recommend this too any music fan, not just another punk-listnener, but any one person who enjoys music that means something, grab this album as fast as you can!

5.0 out of 5 stars Green Day On Top Of Their Game, Feb 12 2005
By
b (somewhere in québec) - See all my reviews
This review is from: American Idiot (Audio CD)
When I went out and bought this album, I had heard a couple of the tracks such as American Idiot, Jesus Of Suburbia and Boulevard of Broken Dreams. (Who dosn't know that one?) To be honest, I had never listened to Green Day CD in my life. But what I heard blew my mind. The vocals are amazing, and Mike and Tré, are also impressive. The album is extremly well plotted out and the packaging is also incredible. Although keep in mind that since this is a ''rock opera'', it is much better if listened to in continuity. Here's my review for each track:

1. American Idiot: Good opening song. Fast paced and catchy. Very meaningful politically. 4/5

2.Jesus Of Suburbia: This song has five parts stringed together. Part one and two are the better ones but it's still a good song overall. 3/5

3. Holiday: My personal fave. Good guitar. Good basslines. Meaningful. Follows perfectly into Blvd Of Broken Dreams.5/5

4.Boulevard Of Broken Dreams:Whoever dosn't know this song isn't in the right decade. Very popular, good vocals, good guitar although somewhat getting old. 4/5

5. Are We The Waiting: An O.K. song, but not the best they have to offer. 2/5

6. St.Jimmy: Very good song. They've gone back to the very roots of punk with fast-paced, three-cord guitar playing. Catchy
4/5

7. Give Me Novacaine: Softer and slower paced but nevertheless a great song. 4/5

8.She's A Rebel: Not their greatest. 3/5

9. She's An Extraordinary Girl: Good but not great. 3/5

10. Letterbomb: Very good song. Verse is particularily good. 4/5

11. Wake Me Up When September Ends: Very soft. Remains a great song. 4/5

12. Homecoming: The second song with multiple parts. Not as good as Jesus Of Suburbia. 3/5

13. Whatsername: Good way to end the album. Bittersweet touch of sadness to it. 4/5

All in all, I highly recommend this album not just because of the pacing or the songs but for its meaning and its plotting. I hope my review helped you a lot.

Sincerely,

b
