A hidden gem now revealed!,
This review is from: Corner Gas: Season One (2DVD) [Import] (DVD)
For anyone not fortunate enough to live where "Corner Gas" is aired (which I think is only in Canada) please treat yourself and check out the first season on DVD.It's a quirky look at life in Saskatchewan, in the fictitious prairie burg of Dog River, which is little more than a wide place in the road. It could as easily be any small town in America, complete with the everybody-all-in-your-biz syndrome, the travails of a newcomer trying to fit in, rabid rivalry with neighboring towns, creative ways to handle outsiders passing through who criticize the area, and hilarious chaos when something happens to disrupt the routine they are all comfortable with. You come to understand why they really wouldn't want to live anywhere else or change a thing, all while laughing your head off. Really great stuff, and recently voted Canada's best television show. Sharp, dry wit, no laugh track (you not only won't miss it, you'll love not hearing it), and populated with characters who are all just plain hoots. Some inside Canadian humor, but as an American living in Canada I find that I get most of it; some cameos by Canadian sports or entertainment personalities have to be identified by my husband, but not knowing who the person is usually doesn't ruin the joke. Try it! I really think you'll enjoy it.

We received Corner Gas season one as a gift last Christmas and watched one eposide and loved it first time. Half of our family are Canadian but everyone understands the humour and you get the good old small town feeling from this incredible series. I have watched the complete series 18 times now and can't get enough. I would strongly recommend this to anyone. You will love it!Bruce, New Zealand

A sleepy fictional Canadian town, Dog River, Saskatchewan, with off centre characters with too much time on their hands. A place where the possibility of getting a traffic light causes a town uproar. The one thing they have in common is their hatred for the neighbouring town of Wulerton (they all spit after mentioning this town's name). It's the story basically of Brent LeRoy who runs the corner gas station, taking over from his retired father (Oscar) who is still around to critisize how things are run or fill in on occassion, yelling at a customer for taking a penny "right in front of my eyes" from the take a penny, give a penny bowl. The most respected or feared person in the town is probably Brent's mother who's main daily task is putting up with Brent's father. The two RCMP officers spend time arguing over which police car is car one, "I'm car one", "but mine has a big one on it", "whatever car I'm in is car one". Or taking Oscar to the doctor in handcuffs. "We're the handcuffs really necessary?". "Well you did take a swing at me". Or there is Lacy who has relocated from Toronto to run her late aunt's restaurant. She gets a taste of local culture after ordering something other than a beer in the local pub. She orders a red wine. The bartender calls in back, "get that bag of red wine, no not that one, that's the ketchup". Though she knows she's become one of them the first time she spits after mentioning Wulerton. And then there is Hank, Brent's boyhood friend who also never left town. He is probably the most off-centre of the lot, not quite keeping up with happenings of the day and having the ability to find conspiracy in everything. "Lacy, you've been trying to get a stop light at that intersection for years". "But I've only been here 6 months" The writing is great, the interactions between the characters is superb. Hilarious, very highly recommended

A Very Funny Series... Technically Poor DVD Release,
By A Customer
This review is from: Corner Gas: Season One (2DVD) [Import] (DVD)
"Corner Gas" is certainly one of the freshest and funniest Sitcoms on Canadian or American television in they last few years. It is very well written and with good acting. I love the dry wit and sarcasm, and the fact that there is no laugh track. However I found the DVD release to be technically very poor! This is very unfortunate since the show itself is done so very well. Most notably, there are no subtitles and the volume levels fluctuate noticeably every few seconds. I found this to be very annoying indeed. I hope that Video Service Corp. will address these technical issues for the Season II DVD. Overall though, a very funny series!

The funniest show ever.,

I was recommended this show as being along the lines of an Ed with the small town charm and quirks of a Stuckeyville. Since I cannot see it here in the U.S., I went out on a limb and bought the DVD set. Well, it is not Ed. It is much better!! I have not laughed so hard and loud in years. The only disappointing thing is that it will be another year before Season Two is out on DVD. I would gladly pre-order it now.

Corner Gas is a great comedy with a great future. If you ever lived in a small town you can realte to these characters.Brent Butt is classic on the screen and in the writing.Would like to see a better format for next years DVD with the bloopers esp the sound is very hard to hear. Good Quality however on the actual story.

It Just Doesn't Get Any Better,

I work in a nonproffit organization with volunteers. Last year, some of these volunteers began pestering me to watch this new "Corner Gas" show that was coming out. Finally, I did. It was one of those cases where one watches once, to shut people up, and then does not lok back. I am hooked. I watched all of the episodes, bought the DVD's, and even bought copies of the DVD's for some of my American friends, some of whom have said this is the best TV they've seen in years. My only gripe about the DVD's are that CTV's descriptive video track was not included. I am blind, and was grateful to learn that the program was being aired on TV with descriptive video. It would have been very helpful if the descriptive video had been made available as an alternate audio track on the CD's. Even so, this is must-see TV. If you thought that Canada couldn't come out with a decent sitcom, this show will prove you wrong, as it has proven me wrong.

This is really one of the most intelligent comedy shows around, and script writing in the same league as Monty Python. Oh, it is very different, but as quirky funny. And there's no canned laughter, so you will enjoy watching the episodes with regular intervals as each time you discover some new details, as a lot of the jokes are just quiet little comments. The actors are so much 'in character' that I wonder if they'll have problems shedding their Corner Gas persona. Also, in many respects, Corner Gas shows how different Canadians are to US Americans, and in particular that Canadians' mannerism and sense of humour is much more civilised and sophisticated. (Bias herewith admitted: Canadophile). The commenting on the three first episodes gives good clues on how much work was involved getting this show to be the sterling effort it is. The quality of both sound and picture are excellent, and it is played problem-free on a newer DVD player in Europe as well (and then will be in Australia). Now it is just to get the rest of the series! |
