5.0 out of 5 stars Captures the real life of a Las Vegas Showgirl.
I recently purchased this movie on DVD because I am a big fan of Elizabeth Berkley and watched her as she grew up on Saved By The Bell. 3.0 out of 5 stars Um...
Hey, "viewer from USA", if you burned your DVD after the first 30 minutes, then how exactly did you know about the "demented/crazy rape scene" at the END of the movie? That's weird...

I recently purchased this movie on DVD because I am a big fan of Elizabeth Berkley and watched her as she grew up on Saved By The Bell. I thought this movie was outstanding and brilliant in every way! It is beautifully shot, and the special features on this edition are neat too. This movie is about a girl, Nomi, who is running away from a troubled past. She flees to Las Vegas in hopes of making it big as a Las Vegas Showgirl. Gina Ravera, known as Molly, takes Nomi, Elizabeth Berkley, in off the streets. To survive, Nomi works at a seedy strip club, The Cheetah. As she attends Molly's work, she realizes how wonderful it would be to be in the show, Goddess. She auditions and gets into the show. Then, a rivalry develops between the star Cristal Conners, Gina Gershon, and Nomi, and Nomi ends up hurting Cristal in roder to be the star off the show. After sleeping with the entertainment director, she ends up as the star of Goddess. All goes well, until Nomi realizes that she has hurt everyone along the way of making it big. She also realizes that Las Vegas would have probably been better if she never hitched a ride to that city. She makes a couple paybacks, and travels home with some gained knowledge of Las Vegas Showgirls.

All and all, this movie looked beautiful, and kept me wanting more. Buy this movie today, you'll never regret it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful but sleazy, Aug 11 2009

Even though I have seen the movie on video tape and DVD, it was a good movie. Even if I do not agree with other peoples dissaproval, I would think it is wonderful. Perhaps they should have a 3 DVD set. 1 for the NC-17 rating, 2 for the R-Rating and an unrated version.Showgirls

4.0 out of 5 stars Eye candy, July 17 2004
By
Eolake "eolake.blogspot.com" (Lancashire, United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
Showgirls is one one of the most universally panned movies of the nineties. Everybody hates it, or laughs at it.

Frankly, I don't know why. Or rather, I do know why, and it is not because it is bad. OK, granted, it is pretty bad when you consider some of the acting, and most of the story. But how many movies is this not true for? Certainly it is no worse than most action flicks, and you don't see Jean-Claude van Damme being drop-kicked all over Hollywood.

The thing is that this film is obviously eye candy. And today you cannot be politically correct and not attack something like that. I notice that it moved straight to the third place nationally when it came out on video, and that it has an average rank of four out of fives stars with the audience at Amazon. Critics; can't live with them.

See it for the girls. What girls! They can even move. Elizabeth Berkley's moves are smoking sexy.

And that's all I have to say about that... (Lahf is lahk a box of chokolates.)

4.0 out of 5 stars So Much Fun, July 11 2004

I'll never forget the first time I saw this film. I saw it in a crowded theatre with a bunch of people who really got the joke. ALL ABOUT EVE crossed with VALLEY OF THE DOLLS, this flick is irresistible in terms of sheer trash. Kudos to Elizabeth Berkely for having the guts to get involved with a film such as this one. Like her or resent her, that girl is no fool. Since this, she has managed to work with both Oliver Stone & Woody Allen. Not exactly shabby company. Is she maybe a little like her character Nomi? Kudos to Gina Gershon for delivering such a fantastically entertaining screen bitch(Not long after this she did some fantastic work with Michael Mann in THE INSIDER). A hilarious script with similar set design(check out Kyle Mclachlan's swimming pool)& choreography, SHOWGIRLS has to be seen to be believed. Has To Be Seen!!!!!!!!!!

2.0 out of 5 stars THE Funniest movie I have EVER seen!, Jun 29 2004

Showgirls is the most entertaining, (un-intentionally) funny movie I have ever seen. From beggining to end, it is filled with cheesy scenes, bad acting, and hilarious dialouge that will have you rolling on the floor!"Showgirls" tries to be sexy, but completely fails. The film is crap, thats why I only gave it two stars, one because it has good production values, and the other just because it honestly isn't worth just one star. But it get five out of five in being entertaining and laugh-out-loud funny!

4.0 out of 5 stars Seriously, Jun 17 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Showgirls (Widescreen) (DVD)
I get a huge kick out of people who bash movies like "Showgirls" and "Poison Ivy" for being "inappropriate" or for in any way taking these movies at all seriously. People that do are hypocrites. They want to be cultured snobs but are too lazy to read books so they demand and expect movies and television shows to provide that intellectual stimulation, and are aghast when it doesn't work out that way. Get over yourselves. Movies are made for entertainment, "escapism" if you will, not to be some big life-changing thing. Just enjoy this movie for its campiness and delightful ridiculousness, and for the fact that Gina Gershon and Elizabeth Berkley are perpetually naked, and therefore, burning hot.

1.0 out of 5 stars Sex and nudity in the city of gambling, Jun 15 2004
This review is from: Showgirls (Widescreen) (DVD)
This movie is about a woman who goes to Las Vegas to try gambling but instead becomes a prostitute.
If the nudity could be removed I believe this could be an exciting thriller about gambling. Instead it is really just like a silly soap opera with lots of nudity.
Because of the large amount of nudity in this film I wouldn't recommend it for children or women.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bad Bad Movies Don't Get No Better Than This!, Jun 13 2004
By
This review is from: Showgirls (Widescreen) (DVD)
This is the quintessential bad movie. It's so bad it's great! I remember when this movie came out and I believe it was the director's intention to make a serious movie. Well I'm glad it didn't turn out that way. This has to be by far one of the most hilarious movies I've seen. The over-over-overacting by Elizabeth Berkeley is pure comedy and will keep you laughing from the first scene to the last. It's pretty hard to take any of it seriously when scene after scene after scene is just so ridiculous, I.E. the pool sex scene. If one could even call it that...watching that poor gal flop around in the water like that reminded me of a fish out of water fighting for its life. It was great. The dance sequences were great, I must say I enjoyed the dancing. A lot of people say this is a horrible movie and it is, but the key is to not take any of it seriously and just turn your brain off and watch it. You can't help but laugh, I promise. I know when I first saw it years years years ago, I thought it was the worst piece of crap I had seen...then I saw it again and again and it's the movie I watch when I need a damn good laugh. Definitely a must have.

2.0 out of 5 stars Lots of girls showing..., Jun 8 2004
By
This review is from: Showgirls (Widescreen) (DVD)
It's an eye opener, reading the reviews, that the kitzhiness of a movie can also be good. A cheesy story, actors who cannot act - I have to admit that watching this movie I felt like I was transported to another planet. A fascinating experience in its own way. Some of the nude scenes are arousing. This movie plays best when you have the mute button on. I'd pick Basic Instinct over this one any day because there the story line is better even if chaotic.

4.0 out of 5 stars Underrated, Jun 2 2004
By
C. Baker "cbaker" (Washington, DC) - See all my reviews

This review is from: Showgirls (Widescreen) (DVD)
This is one of those movies that people seem to either really love or hate. I actually liked the movie for a variety of reasons.

First, the plot is believable. A down and out, although attractive woman dreams of being a Las Vegas showgirl. She clearly has the looks and talent to be successful, just not the pedigree. The movie is about what it takes for her to achieve her goal, in a somewhat seamy world where women and men are exploited by a cast of sleazy characters. Secondly, Naomi, the main character played by Elizabeth Berkley, does have character. She eventually has to decide if her dream is worth her compromising her values. And despite being stripper and former call girl, she does have character.

I'm not sure why this film is so reviled by some.
