3.0 out of 5 stars Not as Funny as the TV show but Still Enjoyable!
This movie remake isn't as funny as the TV show episodes but that doesn't mean that I thought the movie was not funny and wasn't good, the movie had some scenes that were very funny and all in all it was a pretty cute movie and I got a lot of enjoyment from watching it and I thought the actors were really good, especially Jim Varney, (Ernest Goes to Camp), Deidrich Bader...

I would recommend this movie gets put on dvd. I really enjoyed the movie with Jim Varney. I had started a dvd collection and I have been watching for this to come available on dvd for quite some time. I think it is a really funny remake. And I would recommend this movie to everybody who loves Jim Varney as I do! I would also like to add that Lilly Tomlin and the rest of the cast were excellent in their protrayal of the orginal characters in the tv series. I have to admit I was very surprized as to how well Jim Varney played Jed in this movie. He had to follow Buddy Epson, whom is an excellent actor, as Jim Varney I believe, if had he lived longer, he would of shown us his real tallents.

I had this movie on tape and I would love to have it on DVD so I hope it gets released on DVD. I would also love to see the TV show get on DVD in complete season boxsets. Yes I know the TV show is on DVD but it's only some best of episodes and not complete season DVD boxsets!

2.0 out of 5 stars Y'all come back now, you hearwho will?, July 1 2003
This review is from: Beverly Hillbillies (VHS Tape)
Beverly Hillbillies, The (1993) Jim Varney, Erika Eleniak, Lily Tomlin, Dabney Coleman, Cloris Leachman, Diedrich Bader, Lea Thompson, Rob Schneider, Buddy Ebsen, Dolly Parton, D: Penelope Spheeris. From the TV show of 1962 arrives the big-screen update, with the Clampett clan striking oil in the Arkansas boondocks where they turn billionaires and move to Beverly Hills ("swimming pools and movie stars"), falling target to calculating Schneider and his wife Thompson. The cast matches the old faces and is greatly enjoyable (Tomlin is good as Miss Jane Hathaway and Leachman is a spitting image of Granny), but they try too hard to mock the former hillbillies . . . it's modernized into a big mess. The cornier script is cluttered with physical comedy and dialogue that's given half a brain, and above all, sex jokes are added in by four writers and given a final approval by a female director (why carp?)! Running Time: 93 minutes and rated PG for adult humor.

2.0 out of 5 stars Most TV-Inspired comedy films are MUCH better than this, May 4 2003

This is one of the lesser efforts to bring a Classic TV Sit-Com's story to the big screen. "The Beverly Hillbillies" were a surprise super-hit during its 1960s sit-com run. Personally, I never quite understood the appeal. The film certainly removed all of my doubts that the entire story was [weak].

To watch an unsuspecting newly welthy former hillbilly farmer fall for the very first determined "gold-digger" is not only insulting, but also unfunny. To make this "idea" the main focus of the entire plot shows that everyone involved with this braindead "comedy" was nbanking solely on the recognizable name power of the title.

Only [real] fans of the TV show may get a few chuckles out of this film, all others don't count on big laughs. Hold the vittles, just pass me the remote!

1.0 out of 5 stars "Hey, Jed, Who Are These Goomers?", Dec 19 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Beverly Hillbillies (VHS Tape)
"I don't know, Granny, but they shore ain't no kin to the Clampetts. Better get out the rock salt and bacon rind, 'cause it looks like they're a-makin fun of us." After watching this sad little film, the viewer is left wondering whether any of the persons involved in producing it had ever seen any episodes of the original sitcom. As a feature film allegedly based upon the series, it falls flat in nearly every aspect. The most obvious flaw is the lack of humor; it appears that neither the writers, director, or actors knew how to effectively set up or execute a funny situation. The script is poor, and the direction is even worse. Although some very talented actors were hired, they were given nothing worthwhile to do, wasting both their talents and the viewer's time; most of the rest of the cast are untalented, and (fittingly) just as obscure now as they were at the time this was filmed. The casting of Jim Varney as Jed Clampett was another bad idea; perhaps this film should be re-titled as "Ernest Goes To California"; Jed was a simple man, not a simpleton. In short, viewers are advised to avoid wasting time watching this mess; enough time was wasted in filming it.

1.0 out of 5 stars Worse Than Ellie's Vittles, Dec 18 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Beverly Hillbillies (VHS Tape)
For those who thought that the botched 1981 TV-movie "Return of the Beverly Hillbillies" was as bad as it could get, guess again; this ill-conceived film is even worse. There are some very talented actors in the cast, but their talents are not used effectively; the remainder of the cast are woefully untalented. With a hackneyed script and an unskilled director, the result is predictably poor. The viewer is left with a muddled series of contrived and unfunny scenes, with no laughs in between. Even the cameo by original sitcom cast member Buddy Ebsen fails; one has to wonder whether Mr. Ebsen later regretted having participated, or why he chose to soil his hands (and reputation) by appearing in this sorry film. This half-hearted film reeks of incompetence at all levels, and seems to be simply another in a series of inferior and unworthy feature versions of classic sitcoms produced to make a quick profit by exploiting the name, with no regard for the quality of the finished product. Stick with the re-runs of the original series, which are vastly superior to this dreadful mess. Everyone associated with this project should be profoundly ashamed of themselves. Even Jethro Bodine would have had better sense than to turn out anything this lousy.

This is one I save for time requiring sheer silliness with no observable traces of reality. I have to admit that it is a very contrived and predictable plot, but anything that is such an obvious spin-off of a fabulously popular television series would have a hard time being anything but derivative. Having said all that, I laughed all the way through the movie, and still chuckle thinking about a lot of the slapstick shtick used so liberally here. The storyline has been updated to make it a bit more topical, and the characters as depicted in the movie are slightly more contemporary than their counterparts in the TV series. But they are just as refreshingly corny and ordinary, and sometimes that is such an invigorating act to watch that it seems liberating somehow.

The cast is uniformly terrific; the best is easily the late Jim Varney, showing surprising range in his star-turn recreating the Jed Clampett character in the shadow of the legendary Buddy Ebsen, who so many of us baby-boomers remember as being Jed Clampett. Of course, Cloris Leachman shows why she is such a celebrated actress in her hilariously naughty portrayal of Granny, and Erika Eleniak gives a wonderfully corny interpretation of sexy but innocent Elly Mae, more interested in 'rasslin' than boys, and as quick to "whup" those boys if they get our of line.

Also quite good is Diedrich Bader as Jethro (and also acting in drag as Jethro's sister Jethrine, on the make and virtually unstoppable), as is Dabney Coleman as Mr. Drysdale, and a wonderful Lily Tomlin as Miss Hathaway. Of course, the villains are key in all this, and Rob Schneider and Lea Thompson spread their wings into comedic farce quite well. The scene with Thompson vamping Jed Clampett with her false French accent is hilarious for its "shocking" unintended double-entendre, and is typical of how funny this movie is at times. As I said earlier, I save it for comic relief when I really yearn for mindless yucks, and it never fails me. Come on down and take a dip in the cement pond. I reckon you'll find it powerful entertaining. Enjoy!

This is one of the best movie remakes of a classic TV show that I have ever seen. In the movie, the salt-of-the-earth Clampetts discover oil, get fabulously rich, and move to Beverly Hills. Jed Clampett (played by Jim Varney) is in search of a wife to help raise Ellie Mae to be a real lady, but the family must beware of evil people who want to steal their wealth. Now, perhaps that sounds a little far fetched, but if you've ever met some simple folk who come into a lot of oil money, the whole story sounds very, very close to home.

The casting is superb -- there are cameo appearances by Dolly Parton, Zsa Zsa Gabor, and Buddy Ebsen. Lily Tomlin is hilarious as the familyï¿s secretary, and Jim Varney actually plays a very believable straight guy. This movie has no sex, foul language, or violence, and will bring lots of laughs to the whole family.
