I've heard a lot of people saying that Gerard Butler does not have the vocal ability to pull off the phantom. But I totally disagree. His voice is different from those earlier Phantoms but it is just a new take on it, kind of like an update. Anyways, I thought he did a fantastic job and conveyed the emotions of the phantom well through his singing and his acting.Emmy Rossum was fantastic! Of all of the recordings and versions of the Phantom that I have heard and seen, I think she is the best Christine, in my opinion. Her voice is not very operatic all the time (only when she needs to be) and I believe it works well in the movie. She is incredibly talented in acting and singing. Well done! Partick Wilson was also very good in the movie. His voice is fantastic. I have always had a problem with the character of Raoul because there was not too much depth to it. But I think the movie and the performance of Wilson adds a lot to Raoul. I always wanted Christine to pick the Phantom but the Raoul in this movie makes me understand why she is so divided between the two. I resent critics who compare this to the musical. I mean of course that will happen but many people cannot understand that they tried to go a different route with less opera but more modern performances. I think it worked very well. I would recommend this movie and soundtrack to anyonewho loves the Phantom of the Opera. It is a new take on a classic musical. And by the way I have heard people to be against this movie because it will take away from the musical. Well I saw it on Broadway a week ago and it was sold out. The Phantom of the Opera will be around for a long time.

I couldn't believe my eyes when i saw some of the things people were writing in regards to the comparison of the two casts. I do agree that Gerard Butler's voice was more appropriate for the role than Michael Crawford. I liked the untrained voice because where would the Phantom have gotten classical training anyways?? One thing I can never say however is that Emmy Rossum was in any magnitude as good as Sarah Brightman. For example, Emmy Rossum had trouble hitting all the high notes! Since this was pre recorded and not a live performance, I was expecting to hear a much better and stronger Christine. One thing I found though was that the supporting cast in both productions was excellent, especially both Steve Barton(Original Raoul) and Patrick Wilson(Movie Raoul). On the whole though, I'd say that both casts did a reasonably good job, but if you want to enjoy the music...just don't listen to both casts so that you won't have anything to compare!

If you have seen the movie, heard the soundtrack(s) but not read the original novel by Gaston Leroux, you are missing out on something wonderful. Buy the book, you will not regret it! Erik (the Phantom for those of you who haven't read the book) is far cleverer in the book than he has ever been portrayed on stage or on screen. Concerning the movie soundtrack: the original cast sdtk's Christine is overly fasletto. Emmy Rossum adds an edge of innocence and purity to the voice of her character in the film. Gerard Butler as the Phantom is superb; although the Phantom in the original sdtk is amazing as well, he is softer, higher, and slightly too gentle for an obsessed serial killer genius. I own both the original and the special edition movie sdtk, because I just can't get enough. It depends on the mood I'm in, which one I listen to... but if I had to choose, I'd say go with the movie sdtk. Christine Daae is sung far better by Ms. Rossum.

To the customer from Canada: this is not opera. It is called the Phantom of the Opera because the phantom lives in the opera house, but that does not make this an opera, it is a broadway musical show. If you find opera boring, listen to Puccini, listen to Maria Callas or Renee Flemming, but for heaven's sake don't call this show an opera.

I loved this CD is was great. I wasn't a big fan of opera because i found it boring until i watched the movie and got the soundtrack. I still don't listen to a whole lot of opera. But by getting this cd i find i listen to it all the time. I find that pretty amazing for i never thought i would ever buy a cd with opera in it. But for me i found it as a must have and worth it. I loved the movie which i thought i wouldn't again for the opera thing but it is great. I think they picked all the perfect actors and actresses to play their perfect parts including Gerard Butler. I have seen some people on here say that he shouldn't have played the part of the phantom because of his looks or his singing or....whatever. I think he was the PERFECT person to play it for he has that misterous look to him and with the mask he was great. And also their is nothing wrong with his voice. I thought they couldn't have picked a better actor for this movie.

I have heard so many nagative reviews on Gerard Butler role as The Phantom but I personally fall in love with this Phantom more than any other one. The movie is great and the sound track is amazing. It has been a very long time since I have the urge to watch the same movie more than once . Great movie, great acting and great voices. Looking forward to the upcoming DVD.

This was an absolutely amazing film that I actually just saw yesterday. The soundtrack was put on hold for me at the local HMV. The music has a modern classical flare that I absolutely adore, Emmy Rossum is a wonderful singer and Gerard Butler's voice suited the phantom perfectly. I would recommend this soundtrack and the movie to anyone who is interested in the arts, and everyone else! PLEASE see this movie, and listen to the music and let those images flow!!

I found this soundtrack pretty good. Like others, I did not absolutely enjoy Butler as the phantom. He has an ok voice but compared to his castmates, he is the least talented. I kind of perfer the more full-bodied voice to his raspy grating one. But good effort. The london cast recording has a better phantom but no doubt about it that the girl who plays Christine is absolutely fantastic! She's not operatic with all that vibrato (only when she needs to be) which is nice because her voice is so pure and clear. She's absolutely amazing. The guy who plays Raoul is also good. I would recommend buying this version to hear Christine. I love her voice. For the "special edition" on with the 30 some odd tracks, I would go for the original cast recording. |
