This is a touching and heartfelt glimpse into the twilight age of the Samurai through the story of one Samurais struggles to survive through poverty and loyalty to his masters. Quite apart from the modern propensity for fast cuts, fast action and fast story this beautiful movie is a quietly paced, thoughtful study. The last action scene, when it comes, is intense and hints at the desperation and struggle to survive in the end. This film is not about the violence, however, and develops strong and sympathetic characters. The young daughters are adorable, and the love of family is tangible. The poverty and struggles are very subtly hinted at through his coworkers and relatives interaction with him, and through heart wrenching scenes by the river. This is a brilliant and beautifully filmed human character study and is one of my favourite movies.

Great movie. Modern day samurai movie that has a sensitive side and good action.
A samurai that would prefer to be simple farmer, he struggles to provide for his family and elderly mother.
This movie is a classic Hiroyuki Sanada movie.

Très bon film historique japonais. Un peu trop sombre par endroit, mais les prises de vue sont souvent des belles (un cerisier en fleur dans un coin, Belle vue sur le samouraï pêcheur, etc). Malgré l'image de couverture il y a fort peu de combats (2 en fait) dans ce film. Il s'agit d'un drame dans lequel un samouraï pauvre, Seibei, qui perd sa femme et reste avec ses deux petites filles et sa mère qui a perdu la mémoire. Il a un travail de genre de commis pour celui qui gère le riz du clan et il fabrique des cages à insecte le soir pour tenter de joindre les deux bouts. Un jour il revoit une amie d'enfance, soeur de son ami également samouraï, qui vient de se séparer de son mari ivrogne et violent.
Très bon petit film selon moi. Touchant.

This is a love story about a widowed low ranking Samurai that has his childhood girlfriend return after a divorce. The acting is very good acting and so is the script. The viewer is taken inside moderate and expensive homes in rural Japan. There are two small fight scenes where the katanas are drawn. There is no gushing blood. If you are sensitive you will need the tissue at the end of this one.
