WHAT A POWERFUL AND MOVING FILM. MADE IN 2003 IT HAD VIRTUALLY GONE UNNOTICED. THERE IS SOMETHING VERY PURE AND GENUINE ABOUT THIS FILM.THIS FILM DOESN'T INSULT THE INTELLIGENCE OF THE VIEWER AS THE MORE RECENT BIG BUDGET HOLLYWOOD FILM THAT DEPICTS THE CRUCIFIXION OF CHRIST WITH ITS GRATUITOUS SCENES OF VIOLENCE. I RENTED THIS DVD AND VIEWED IT WITH MY YOUNG DAUGHTER, AND FELT THAT PEOPLE OF ANY AGE CAN FIND IT INSPIRING.

4.0étoiles sur 5 Kept an eleven-year-old boy spellbound!, Déc 11 2008
I wanted to show my nephew the first few minutes of this film - the moving first verses of the Gospel of John - just to ask him what he thought it meant (he does not attend any church). I turned it off as we talked. "Can't we watch any more of it?" he asked. He continued to watch, absolutely spellbound, for two hours. I was so thrilled that he was getting this excellent introduction to Jesus! I, myself, have found this film very moving.

My only concern as I watch it is the placement of a very beautiful Mary Magdalene in scenes in which her presence is not mentioned in the gospel. There seems to be an implication in the film that she and Jesus are more than just disciple and master.

Jesus asked his disciples to leave their families and homes to follow him, so it seems to put him in a hypocritical postition (to say the least) to imply that he himself wasn't willing to do the same. I feel it is unfortunate that the director chose to confuse viewers in this way.

Otherwise, this is an excellent effort to help people to connect with the Gospel of John.

5.0étoiles sur 5 A deeply moving masterpiece., Mai 25 2004
Ce commentaire est de: Gospel Of John (DVD)
"The Gospel of John" is one of the best films I seen during the last few years. As a word-for-word interpretation of the gospel from the Good News Bible, TGOJ gives a faithful representation of the Gospel According to John. Henry Ian Cusick, I believe, is one of the best actors ever to play Jesus (ranking in the company of Robert Powell in "Jesus of Nazareth" and "The Passion of the Christ's" Jim Caviezel), and Christopher Plummer's narration is also powerful. I know it's been noted here before, but I'll go ahead and say it again anyway: TGOJ and "The Passion..." make great companion films to each other, with one film focusing on the crucifixion of Jesus and the hours leading up to it, while the other movie focusing on His life, teachings and ministry. Both movies are great, although I would have loved to have seen TGOJ get as much exposure as "The Passion."

The producers of this film stayed completely true to the Gospel of John and recreated the entire book on film. Even after having read and studied this book of the Bible, I discovered new truths as they were revealed during the depiction of Jesus' ministry, death, and resurrection. The craftsmanship of the production was excellent and the actors gave the respect and credence due the story of Our Lord. This is a wonderful movie for believers and should be used as an evangelism tool for unbelievers. It is a beautiful and reverent work.

I believe this is one of the greatest evangelical tools present before us. I recommend it to everyone, and especially to those who are trying to discover the Good News about the life of Jesus.

The film is well documented, and the producers are scholars in the subject matter. Further, the voice of Christopher Plummer gives an exemplary power to the narration. I frequently listen to the movie in the background while doing my work. It is well produced. The Gospel of John is the most preferred book in the Gospels.

Other movies I recommend: "Jesus of Nazareth" and "The Greatest Story ever told."

5.0étoiles sur 5 One of the best Jesus movies!, Avril 30 2004

Definitely a treat. Not only is this word for word from the Bible, but they went to great pains on the sets and costumes. This Jesus is more realistic - one you can take seriously, unlike the happy-go-lucky "smiley Jesus" of the Visual Bible's Matthew video (In "Matthew", Jesus laughs as he calls someone a hypocrite, or jokes around in comic relief while he's talking about how it would be better for a person to be drowned in the sea than to cause a child to sin.)

I found The Gospel of John absolutely riveting. I couldn't stop watching it. What a great way to actually listen to and understand the words that Jesus said, as recorded by eyewitnesses. In my opinion, it is the best movie about Jesus' life, ever.

5.0étoiles sur 5 A Spiritual Feast, Avril 5 2004
Ce commentaire est de: Gospel Of John (DVD)
Jesus the Messiah is portrayed as God's joyous, loving, and forgiving Son in Director Philip Saville's "The Gospel of John." The film, as the title suggests, is based on the fourth gospel which is the preferred scriptural text in the Eastern Orthodox Church. The East emphasizes life, resurrection, and redemption. Hence the film is a stark contrast from Mel Gibson's Catholic theological emphasis of suffering in "The Passion."

Nominated this year for two Genie Awards, the primary national film award of Canada, The Gospel of John is needlessly repetitive. The screen writer (John Goldsmith) needed some editorial assistance.

The actors, however, offer solid performances. Jesus (Henry Ian Cusick) beams with friendship, good cheer, and acceptance. Even when he chides the apostles for disbelief or for being dense Jesus does so in a nurturing way. The actor possessed an aura or presence that made Jesus unique - of this world and yet of another. John the Baptist (Scott Handy), although a small role, is brilliantly and memorably portrayed as a mysterious, contemplative prophet. The film is woven together by the rich, Shakespearean trained voice of narrator Christopher Plummer.

A few colleagues with whom I attended a showing thought the cinematography muddy. There's merit to the criticism that some scenes were too narrowly focused. It didn't, however, disrupt my overall enjoyment of the film. The opening scene is well done - the morning sun rising with Plummer narrating, "In the beginning was the Word." There are similar well-crafted scenes. The narration and dialogue of the actors, massaged with several additions, had an almost poetic ring.

The movie has tasteful, realistic depictions of the life of Jesus without high drama. Blood and water, for example, drips from the wound of Christ - it doesn't come forth like a rain storm as in the Gibson film. Angels at the tomb of the resurrected Jesus are shown as bright light. It is one of several believable supernatural interpretations of scripture.

The film focused on a positive message that is shown to be timeless and everlasting with an emphasis on the post-resurrected Son of God. Probably 30 minutes is devoted to the risen Jesus. It's an important reminder to stay focused on the end result.

In one scene the living Christ says to a disciple, "If I should have John [the Evangelist] live till I return what is that to you." I recall watching the film and thinking of an ancient icon, "Ladder of Divine Ascent," where monks journey up the long ladder of life while staying focused on the living Christ. If you worry about your own soul and avoid all the many distractions along the way, there won't be time to worry about anything else.

The film offered a believable depiction of Christ's divine and human duality - a great prophet and teacher who travels through life to emerge as the savior of mankind. It's a challenging, complicated theme to bring together in cinema, yet it's done effortlessly. There are sub-themes - an intense eye contact with Mary Magdalene - gently suggests that she may have had a role that complemented both the divine and, especially, human nature of Jesus. It's done tastefully.

From my Eastern theological perspective I would have liked to have seen a greater role for the Mother of God. Gibson does this quite successfully in his film, but in The Gospel of John the Theotokos is just another disciple, though holy.

The film made me reflect on the many faces, or more properly, the many interpretations of Jesus. Theologically I felt at ease with this caring, nonjudgmental portrayal. But is this the Jesus I'll meet on judgment day? Time will tell.

5.0étoiles sur 5 "this was the real light", Avril 1 2004
Ce commentaire est de: Gospel Of John (DVD)
Using the American Bible Society's Good News Bible, this word-for-word production is meticulous in its detail, and exquisitely acted and filmed. The Gospel of John emphasizes the divinity of Jesus, and has some of the best loved passages of scripture, and perhaps the most well known verse in the New Testament, John 3:16, "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life".
The superb cinematography, the authenticity of the costumes and sets, and the marvelous acting make this production a must in every Christian film library, and it would also make an excellent teaching tool.

Henry Ian Cusick is brilliant as Jesus; an actor with extensive theatrical credits and a varied life experience, being born in Peru, raised in Trinidad and Scotland, and now living in England. He has a face of depth and beauty, with much expressiveness and a voice that is a joy to listen to. There are scenes with a wide range of emotion, from the sensitivity before the raising of Lazarus, to the driving out of the money changers with passion and rage. This is a strong, vital Jesus, not the ethereal slender man that is sometimes depicted in films, and one that I am sure is more like the Jesus of history.
Other splendid performances come from Scott Handy as John the Baptist, Daniel Kash as Simon Peter, Richard Lintern as the Leading Pharisee, and Stephen Russell as Pontius Pilate.
The narration by Christopher Plummer is masterful.

The lovely outdoor locations were filmed in Southern Spain, and the score by Jeff Danna, using native instruments, is wonderful, and includes the ney, a middle-eastern flute, and an ancient fiddle called a rebab. Soprano Esther Lamandieu adds much to the music with chants in Aramaic, especially during the final credits. Total running time is 3 hours.

The Special Features: "Behind the Scenes", total running time 1 hour and 39 minutes.

4: Director of Photography Miroslaw Baszak.
5: Production Designer Don Taylor, on building the sets and finding the outdoor locations.
6: Costume Designer Debra Hanson on the 2,500 costumes, and the symbolism of the color palette used.

8: Hair and Makeup Designer Trefor Proud on the magic of his craft.
9: Narrator Christopher Plummer.
10: Henry Ian Cusick.

4.0étoiles sur 5 Very well done, but not perfect, Mars 24 2004

This word for word adaption from the Gospel of John is one of the better Jesus films available. I love the scenes at the wedding of Cana, the woman at the well, the healing of the lame and blind men, the feeding of the 5,000, and the interaction between Jesus and the Sanhedrin and Pilate after his arrest. One gets to know the various disciples better in this film than most.

Although never stated in the dialogue of the film, the film portrays Mary Magdaline as a former prostitute who gradually changes over time (all done by the clothes she wears). Of course, no text in the Bible ever calls Mary a prostitute. Mary is also portrayed as being present at the Lord's Supper. That may have been true, but it is not mentioned in the Bible.

The one negative critique I have is that the character of Jesus appears more confrontational than I have viewed him. One can either read the biblical lines in a confrontational tone of voice, or in a pleading tone of voice. Here the film tends to take a confrontational tone in the interaction between the Jesus and the Jewish leadership. Either way would upset the religious leaders because of Jesus' attempt to point out the inconsistencies of the leaders. But it is the softer approach that better fits my view of Jesus.

All in all, it is a very well made film and I love the fact that computer generation now allows entire biblical towns to be created on screen.
