4.0 out of 5 stars Butchery?
Gary Cooper was always one of my favourite screen stars, and I plunked down good money to see him in "The General Died at Dawn", "Beau Geste" and "Bengal Lancer". Was I peeved when part way through "The General Died at Dawn" I realized that a very important scene had been cut out or misplaced, one that first brought the two main characters, O'Hara and Judy Perry,...

3.0 out of 5 stars Great Films, disrespectful transfers
I bought this collection because it was the only way to get "Beau Geste" on DVD. Getting "The General Died at Dawn" and "Lives of a Bengal Lancer" was a huge bonus. These are great old movies. However, the digital transfers are mediocre at best. Bengal Lancer has some missing audio blips, streaking and graininess. It is on par with 99...

This review is from: Gary Cooper 5 Movie Collection (Design for Living / The Lives of a Bengal Lancer / Peter Ibbetson / The General Died at Dawn / Beau Geste) (DVD)
Gary Cooper was always one of my favourite screen stars, and I plunked down good money to see him in "The General Died at Dawn", "Beau Geste" and "Bengal Lancer". Was I peeved when part way through "The General Died at Dawn" I realized that a very important scene had been cut out or misplaced, one that first brought the two main characters, O'Hara and Judy Perry, together. Early on, O'Hara is told to avoid the train at Pengwa and to make certain he boards the plane instead. Miss Perry bleats to her father that she doesn't want to hurt a man she's never met. In the very next scene, they're all at the train station, including O'Hara! He and Judy meet in her compartment and act as though it's not the first time either. Obviously some nitwit who couldn't care less has misplaced the previous scene where she somehow lures him into taking the train. Who knows what else was cut out or lost from this classic old film. Bugger the lot of them! Don't waste your money. Maybe someday someone else will restore these films to what they should be.

However, the digital transfers are mediocre at best. Bengal Lancer has some missing audio blips, streaking and graininess. It is on par with 99 cent videos I have purchased out of discount bins.
But, really, these are discount movies. You are getting 5 films for $25.00, only $5.00 a film... barely the cost of a rental - and all of them worth watching - repeatedly.
