5.0 out of 5 stars nearly forgotten and underappreciated
After finally seeing this wonderful movie,I am stunned anyone would not consider it one of the great films. The pacing is so casual and relaxed in places it reminds me of Fellini. Some reviews correctly mention that the battle scenes are brief and somewhat underproduced, but they are secondary to the subtle poetic images Sam Fuller is putting on the screen. If you have seen...

3.0 out of 5 stars Everything you could possibly ever want to know.
This re-construction of the hacked up mess that was 'The Big Red One' is the pet project of film critic, Richard Schickel. I have other DVDs with Schickel doing commentaries. He's okay. He knows his film history, but I always find his comments sort of on the surface. He doesn't achieve the depth of analysis that I like when I listen to someone like Christopher...

5.0 out of 5 stars Second only to Saving Private Ryan., Dec 31 1998

This review is from: Big Red One, the (VHS Tape)
A wonderful WWII masterpiece that follows the first infantry from North Africia to Omaha Beach and all across Europe. One of my favorite war movies. Mark Hamil does an exelent job as Griff the sharp shooter. And has a real tear jerker ending when the Big Red One goes to liberate a concentration camp.

1.0 out of 5 stars Worst war film ever?, April 20 2004

This review is from: Big Red One, the (VHS Tape)
This film is a disgrace, the combat is unrealistic and i'm sure the tanks in it are all the same for americans and germans alike. The narration is very annoying and quite pointless. I know the film is trying to put across an important message but it could have done it better; better actors for a start, Lee Marvin is not exactly my favourite. Overall leave this film alone, if you want to see a good war film watch Patton, A Bridge too Far or The Longest Day.
