Joseph's story is inaccurate
This video was culturally inaccurate. It could have been great. The Elizabethian accents were ridculous as well as the pale egyptians. I was sorely disappointed in this films portrayal of Israels and the Egyptians....by the way I believe the Africans were darker than Leslie Ann Warren.

Though this interpretation of Joseph's life has been substantially embellished, the heart and soul of the story remain intact, and is ultimately quite faithful to the Biblical account covered in Genesis Ch. 33:18 through Ch. 46:30.
Much of the acting is marvelous, especially Ben Kingsley as Potiphar, whose part has thankfully been enlarged, because he is riveting in every scene he is in.
Martin Landau is also excellent as the patriarch Jacob, who mourns the apparent loss of his favorite son, Joseph.
Australian actor/dancer Paul Mercurio ("Strictly Ballroom") is good in the lead, and others in the cast include Leslie Ann Warren as Potiphar's lying wife, the always beautiful Dominique Sanda as Leah, and some fine character actors playing Joseph's brothers, notably Michael Attwell (Judah), and Vincenzo Nicoli (Simeon). Included in this film, and intrinsic to Joseph's life are the stories of Tamar and Judah, and the horrific tale his sister Dinah, both done effectively.The only parts that are less than first-rate are the scenes in Pharoah's court; almost campy in costuming and acting, they can provide some amusement in the midst of all the drama. Stefano Dionisi is a most unlikely and modern looking Pharoah, and has the ultimate babe for a wife, the pulchritudinous Monica Bellucci. The entire film though, is always mentally and visually entertaining, and has much spiritual content. As with so much of the Old Testament, there are allegories that run through its narrative that point to the New Testament, and the story of Joseph has much of this symbolism. Filmed in Quarzazate, Morocco, with its exotic ancient structures and landscapes, the cinematography by Rafaele Mertes is wonderful; this is a way above average production for television, and a film about a man who "does nothing against his conscience even on pain of death" is worth watching again and again.

Thoroughly enjoyed this depiction of the life of Joseph and learned much by viewing the movie! Even though I have read the biblical account, seeing it come to life in the movie filled in things in the story that I missed in the biblical account.Sometimes it's nice to read the bible story first and then follow it up with seeing the movie. Movie very well done! Highly recommend!

This is absolutely one of the best produced and acted Bible stories around. It's accuracy, acting and pacing set a new standard for Bible-based productions. Bible scholars will not be offended, and movie buffs will not be disappointed. It tightens my throat at the end every time. I strongly recommend this for your Bible movie collection.

I truly enjoyed this film. I think it was superbly done, however, I did not agree with the scene between Joseph and Potipher's wife. I think it was a bit too sexy and it was not necessary. This scene does not make it suitable for younger audiences and I think that is a shame because it is such a great movie. However, that was the only scene where I saw Hollywood getting carried away.

I watched this video and followed along in my bible. It follows the word of god exactly. Way to go. It almost brought me to tears. My kids loved it. I would highly recommend. A Must see.

Whether you are a fan of the Bible or just a fan of the movies, this is a blockbuster you will go back to again and again! It is scripturally very accurate, packed with the true stories that would be the envy of any scriptwriter! Adults and children alike will learn this important historical account through all the talents and wonders of hollywood, and yet maintain the integrity of the biblical events! This is a must see for anyone interested in this exciting story!

I've seen other bible stories before and I am always a little annoyed at how they will tend to deviate from what the bible actually says. One title that springs to mind is Moses. I haven't seen many Moses movies that stick to the biblical account and I figured this movie will probably be the same. I was pleasantly surprised. Actually, that's an understatement, I was extremely happy at what I seen. I have read the bible and this story in particular is my favorite and this movie was very accurate. There's only one or two minor spots that was a little off, but it was nothing major. I wasn't sure how Martin Landau would be, I only remembered him from Space 1999... his performance in this was awesome. Especially when he was told Joseph was killed, his display of grief was really nicely acted and moved me. I also felt they done a nice job of filling in the details that the bible doesn't cover and I got the feeling that a lot of research was done in an honest attempt to be accurate. There are some things we don't know what happened, but when you watch this, you get the feeling they got it right. Well thought out, well acted and a very good movie. I was brought to tears several times through the movie. We need more movies like this. This is a must buy.
Here are the spots I thought were a little off what the bible indicates. I felt the brothers were a little too "angry" in spots, like near the end some still didn't seem to have repented of what they did to Joseph, when the bible indicates they were very sorry for what they did. The brothers never attempted to attack Joseph like they showed in the movie. Also, I felt that Joseph being upset at them for what they did to him and trying to come to grips with it and decide what to do with them wasn't accurate. The bible indicates that Joseph understood completely that God had intended all this to happen and he had NOTHING at all against his brothers. Also, Joseph never spoke to his brothers until he revealed who he was. He spoke in whatever language Egyptians spoke and a man interpreted for him. There was never a question from his brothers about how this Egyptian knew their language. At the end of the movie it indicates that all the brothers are considered part of the nation of Israel when the bible says quite clearly that Israel's name was given to Joseph's two sons, not Judah or any others. These are all fairly minor points, but it is important to understand the complete truth, read the bible story first so you know.
Anyhow, awesome movie... ;)

Biblically accurate and very suspenseful. An excellent portrayal of the Bible story. Who cares about the skin colors and the false accents (who knows egyptian anyway?). LOL!

The Best way to see Joseph, Nov. 17 2003
I bought this film after seeing most of it on A&E. This film is by far the best way to see Joseph. The settings are beautiful and the entire look of the production are perfect in presenting the story. The casting choices could not have been better! Paul Mercurio is a perfect Joseph. Everyone of the cast was perfect for their parts. This film is the best Joseph movie to date.

AMAZING!, Mai 13 2003
Having just seen this movie for the first time last night, I have to say that in spite of the very white actors in a culture that would clearly be darker in appearance, this movie in writing, production, and acting overcame that one glaring inconsistency with accuracy and with beauty.Bible in hand, we marveled to see that this story followed the actual biblical account with astounding accuracy almost never seen in biblical productions. Entirely enjoyable and a marvelously acted piece, my entire family loved this movie. We had been expecting another biblical mish mash eliciting merely yawns, but were startled to see such a wonderful movie. Martin Landau (Jacob) gave a fantastic performance, as did Ben Kingsley(Potiphar), Paul Mercurio(Joseph) (which bumps STRICTLY BALLROOM out of #1 on my Paul Mercurio list of favorite performances), Leslie-Anne Down was good as Potiphar's wife, and the 11 brothers of Joseph were fabulous. The supporting cast was excellent. The sensitive and well rounded way in which this story was handled was fresh, creative, yet took no liberties in veering from the original story. Although it is not as spectacular in production as THE TEN COMMANDMENTS and other such movies, this movie was more like it "really" would have happened complete with humanity in all of its misery and magnificence. I can not speak highly enough of this movie. What a pleasant surprise. We even got a chuckle out of it now and then!
