5.0 out of 5 stars The beginning of a change in rock
LED ZEPPELIN'S excellent debut album is the strongest debut album by any band ever. Inspired by the works of Cream and starring the (in)famous Jimmy Page of the YARDBIRDS fame, LED ZEPPELIN will forever be among the greats of rock. Inspiring bands all over the world including AC / DC and RUSH, the combination of Page's masterful guitar hooks, mixed with the super frenetic...

3.0 out of 5 stars ENTERTAINING-Blues covers album?!:-) - CLASSIC Zepp?!
Yeah, that's right I think this is a cover's album. It's entertaining, but you've heard it on the radio before. It's highly creative mood music, but it sound's like some traditional blues material...It's that new heavy music, but hippies are outdated and hair metal went out-of-style in the late '80s. So just put this album on and pretend it's the Strokes or the Hives...

5.0 out of 5 stars Great album that defined rock history, July 4 2004

This review is from: Led Zeppelin I (Audio CD)
This is one of the few albums that doesn't have a weak song and every song on this album is a classic, it may not have a wide diversity like their later albums but this a strong album throughout, so strong that it doesn't get boring as quick as some of the rock albums, and I'm only a casual fan of Led Zeppelin, I remember that one of my mother's friends got me hooked on Led Zeppelin when I was about 10 years old, if you're a casual fan of classic rock or hard rock, you really should get this album cause this is one of the rare albums that doesn't have any filler tracks, I think that 5 stars isn't enough to give, I would give it 11 stars instead.

5.0 out of 5 stars Led Zeppelin (I), Jun 27 2004
This review is from: Led Zeppelin I (Audio CD)
Led Zeppelin had a fully formed, distinctive sound from the outset, as their eponymous debut illustrates. Taking the heavy, distorted electric blues of Jimi Hendrix, Jeff Beck, and Cream to an extreme, Zeppelin created a majestic, powerful brand of guitar rock constructed around simple, memorable riffs and lumbering rhythms. But the key to the group's attack was subtlety: It wasn't just an onslaught of guitar noise, it was shaded and textured, filled with alternating dynamics and tempos. As Led Zeppelin proves, the group was capable of such multi-layered music from the start. Although the extended psychedelic blues of "Dazed and Confused," "You Shook Me," and "I Can't Quit You Baby" often gather the most attention, the remainder of the album is a better indication of what would come later. "Babe I'm Gonna Leave You" shifts from folky verses to pummeling choruses; "Good Times Bad Times" and "How Many More Times" have groovy, bluesy shuffles; "Your Time Is Gonna Come" is an anthemic hard rocker; "Black Mountain Side" is pure English folk; and "Communication Breakdown" is a frenzied rocker with a nearly punkish attack. Although the album isn't as varied as some of their later efforts, it nevertheless marked a significant turning point in the evolution of hard rock and heavy metal.

a classic album perfect for fans of psychadelic, blues, hard rock, and heavy metal. the album even has a couple acoustic songs thrown in the mix (Babe I'm Gonna Leave You, black Mountain Side). this album contains such classic songs as Good Times Bad Times, Communication Breakdown, Dazed and Confused, Your Time is Gonna Come, and How Many More Times. there are a couple of excellent Willie Dixon covers (You Shook Me, I Can't Quit You Baby). altogether, a mindblowing experience. even after 34 years!

5.0 out of 5 stars The first re-birth of blues, Jun 19 2004
By
This review is from: Led Zeppelin I (Audio CD)
A lot of people look down on Led Zeppelin for their use of not-so-original lyrics. This album contains quite a few blues rip-offs lyric-wise, however, it more than makes up for it with the raw power in which the band plays, and in which the band would come one of the greatest rock bands in history.

This album has a lot of blues, and many different styles. From the folk-tinged Babe I'm Gonna Leave You, Black Mountain Side and Your Time is Gonna Come, to the raw blues such as You Shook Me, I Can't Quit You Baby, and the fantastic finale jam How Many More Times. They showed signs of their direction in Communication Breakdown and Good Times Bad Times, which reflect on the heavier riffs that would come in the extremely popular album Led Zeppelin II. The one song that really shines is the immensly popular hit Dazed and Confused. This song seems to tell a story in the music... it begins soft and quiet with Robert Plant's vocals fluctuating from whispers to screams... and a while into the song guitarist Jimmy Page takes a short break on guitar (being played with a violin bow)... and the rest of the band comes back with a rejuvinated beat. This song is really quite a trip whenever I listen to it, and it remains to me the highlight of the album.

All in all, there is not a bad song on this CD. This album is a truly amazing debut by the band that took the blues and made it hard, raw, rock'n'roll.

5.0 out of 5 stars Zeppelin's debut is a masterpiece, Jun 17 2004

This review is from: Led Zeppelin I (Audio CD)
Led Zeppelin (1969.) Led Zeppelin's first album.

In the latter half of the sixties, Jimmy Page was left without a band since his previous one, The Yardbirds, had disbanded. However, he wasn't about ready to be done rocking and rolling. He put together a new band with vocalist Robert Plant, bassist John Paul Jones, and drummer John Bonham. He appropriately called this new band The New Yardbirds. However, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out this isn't a very good band name. Fortunately, the band received inspiration from The Who drummer Keith Moon. He had an expression - "This gig is going down like a lead Zeppelin." Liking this term, they changed their name to Led Zeppelin. And in 1969, one of the great years in rock and roll history, these four young men released their self-titled debut album. How does it measure up? Read on and see.

Good Times Bad Times opens the album. It's a solid, classic hard rocking tune, with a slight bluesy touch. The most underrated member of Led Zeppelin is John Paul Jones, and his bass here really must be heard to be appreciated. Babe Im Gonna Leave You is a slower, mostly acoustic tune about heartbreak. Every musical artist, regardless of genre, has to do a few heartbreak tunes - and here Led Zeppelin serves up one of the finest the world has ever seen. You Shook Me is a cover song. To put it simply, this is a slower track, but it's still a hard rocker. I'm not too crazy about this one, but it's still a decent song. Dazed And Confused features the band serving up an excellent example of classic psychedelic hard rock. This is one of the most popular songs that can be found on the band's debut album - and why not? This song ROCKS! Your Time Is Gonna Come kicks off with an organ solo by Jones, which is nothing short of excellent. It's not long before we have a melodic rocker that almost certainly won't fail to please. This here is what we call an underrated masterpiece. Black Mountain Side is short but sweet acoustic instrumental. Jimmy Page is a guitar god, but the acoustic stuff he does never seems to get the proper credit for some odd reason. Communication Breakdown is straight-up classic hard rock, this one is a premonition to the heavy metal that would slowly begin to surface in the seventies. This one is arguably my favorite song on the album. I Cant Quit You Baby is another cover song. This here is a slower, bluesy rocker featuring some excellent guitar riffs by the one and only Jimmy Page. The bass is also excellent, and it really makes me wonder why John Paul Jones is the most underrated person in the band! How Many More Times is yet another cover song. To put it in the simplest terms possible, this is a slow rocker - but it's still hard rock. It's a shame this track never got the proper credit, because the band couldn't have finished the album off with a better track!

There have been numerous issues of this album released over the years, but really, they're all the same other than their packaging. Don't bother shelling out the extra cash to get one of those foreign LP-style replica packages - it's just not worth it. The domestic versions are exactly the same and cost considerably less.

Led Zeppelin's self-titled 1969 debut is one of classic rock's essential masterpieces. Even after all these years, it still stands the test of time. If this little gem is missing from your rock and roll library, I suggest you add it as soon as possible. I don't know if I can call this the band's finest album (it's tough playing favorites with these guys), but it's damn fine nonetheless - and well worth purchasing.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is really just to set emmbks straight, Jun 16 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Led Zeppelin I (Audio CD)
I have not heard every song on here, but I feel that the review by emmbks takes the cake for worst and most ignorant review ever (not just on the Amazon site, either). After reading this review, I had to say something; I couldn't take it anymore. What the hell are you thinking saying losers like the Back Street F*ckers and N'Sync and Britney Spear-My-Heart are anything other than the talentless dipsh*ts that they are? These are the artists that everyone I know can agree upon their lack of talent, and the constant booty shaking they do (and God knows whatelse they do) should merit these guys nothing less than death. I think America has grown up from crap like that. Led Zeppelin is great (in my humble opinion, not the best band ever, but still a classic band that will be remembered for generations). I haven't even read the positive reviews, but I guarentee the 33 or so people who found his/her lame-a** review unhelpful have certainly given this review the a** kickin he/she deserves. Emmbks, just answer me this: what kind of crack-head are you? I have no comprehension how you can consider the noisemakers you consider bands to be makers of real music! People like you make me utterly sick, and I feel I speak on behalf of most everyone reading this when I say that. Get a f*cking clue already, and come back when you have something worthy to say!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Their Best, No Question, Jun 13 2004
By
This review is from: Led Zeppelin I (Audio CD)
Led Zeppelin's incredible debut album is not only the greatest debut in rock/blues history, it is their best album to date. Never since Led Zeppelin has any musical group been able to revolutionize the music of Blues in such a way that they create their own version of it, and soon become the godfathers of rock 'n' roll.

1) Good Times, Bad Times - A very bluesy song, it's short and sweet. 8/10

2) Babe, I'm Gonna Leave You - If you're a fan of classical guitar, you'l love this calm but heavy ballad. 10/10

3) You Shook Me - A blues cover, this song is always good to listen to when your in a relaxing mood. 8/10

4) Dazed and Confused - The GREATEST song ever written by Led Zeppelin, it starts out as a quiet blues-driven song and quickly erupts into a heavy, 2 1/2 minute guitar solo-rocker. Sure to please anyone. 11/10

5) Your Time is Gonna Come - A quiet, joyful song that leaves me speachless. Good tune. 9/10

6) Black Mountain Side - A very folk-inspired instrumental with a catchy tune that will get your foot tapping. 9/10

7) Communication Breakdown - I LOVE this song--it's incredibly catchy, always gets stuck in my head, and the solo rocks--satisfaction guarunteed. 10/10

8) I Can't Quit You, Baby - The bluesiest song on the album, Jimmy Page is in his musical prime. Awesome. 10/10

9) How Many More Times - To be totally honest, i do love this song, but it lacks consistency. Te song just doesn't have a good flow. At eight and a half full minutes, it still rocks though. 9.5/10

All in all, this album is sure to please anybody with a craving for some good rock music. Long live Led Zeppelin, and never die.

Average - 9.4/10 = 5 stars

Peace, everybody, and keep rocking.

5.0 out of 5 stars Zep's greatest album?, Jun 6 2004

I recently read Rolling Stone's "500 greatest album list" and noticed that this album was #29, while IV, II, and Physical Graffiti were in the 60s and 70s. Sure, this album is a groundbreaking album for hard rock and every song on it is a must listen, but I think that II or IV should have topped this album on the list. Nevertheless, this is first rate. Page and Plant turned blues and folk into powerful and diverse material. I reccomend any Zep album and any Zep song.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Debut Album In Rock History, Jun 1 2004

OK I am 47, I have 2 kids and a lot of gray hair..I came from the drug induced 60's as a survivor..I started playing drums at age 9..and after listening to Led Zep I.. I set out on a quest to play every song the band ever did..I have that natural off beat rhythum that John Bonham had and I loved every song they ever did..But without a doubt..even after the ten long years they gave us with the ever changing melodic journey we followed them thru..Led Zep I is still by far the best the band did..Now don't mis-understand...too many bands put out a great debut effort only to falter after 2 or 3 albums and deliver garbage til they drop off the radar..NOT Zeppelin.. Like a fine wine they got better with age..every album a building block from the one before..and the songs got better, more complex and magical .. BUT LED ZEPPELIN I was the greatest foundation any band could build from..there are no cracks in this solid foundation even 35 years later..I still listen to it and am in awe of it..In My Opinion..Though I love every album they did..Led Zep I is the greatest debut album in the history of Rock..It still sounds ahead of its time today..no theres no digital wizardry..but listen to the background delay, echo, and swirling effects and realize it wasn't done with any modern equipment..But rather with microphones placed 300 feet from amps under cardboard boxes..leslie speakers from keyboards used for guitar effects by adjusting and varying the horn speeds, playing cymbal crashes thru a flange and phase shifter..Jimmy Page was not, and is not the GREATEST Guitar Player..BUT He IS The greatest Guitar Composer that has EVER LIVED. This band was set in motion like a gathering storm. They were put together by luck and fate and imediately took Rock and Roll in a blazing new direction...I listen today to a lot of old, not so old and new bands..from Metallica, Evenessance, Godsmack, Linkon Park, I'm sorry but theres is no band that can touch Zeppelin,, they have power even in the countless soft side of the journey,, If you love hard rock, soft rock, acoustic rock, blues, metal, Led Zeppelin did it all, and they did so with a passion that is yet to be matched..NUFF SAID
