The 80s, man. Loved it. This band was the first truly ballad-based band. Tunes penned by Mutt Lange, you would think sound produced. Not so much

This is definitive collection from one of the best metal bands of all-time,

Def Leppard is simply one of the best metal bands of all-time and the success that they accomplished with Pyromania and Hysteria prove that they are one of the best bands of all-time.#1 on the Mainstream rock tracks with Promises. #1 on the Mainstream rock tracks with Stand Up (Kick Love Into Motion). They scored their one and only #1 single on the Hot 100 with the beautiful ballad- Love Bites. Hysteria peaked at #10. Let's Get Rocked hit the top 40 as did Two Steps Behind and Have you ever needed someone so bad. Let's Get Rocked reached #1 on the Mainstream rock charts. Pour some sugar on me reached #2 on the Hot 100 and Armageddon it- reached #3. Def Leppard is the most successful British metal group. Simply put, this album has the best of the best from Def Leppard.

Finally, "Best of" for North America,
By
This review is from: Rock Of Ages: Definitive Collection (2CD) (Audio CD)
"Rock of Ages: The Definitive Collection" finally brings the 2 disc "Best of" Def Leppard to North America. With a slightly varied track list (reflecting different singles that were hits here) and a different new song, "No Matter What," that is now climbing the charts, Def Leppard puts on 2 discs a varied selection of hits and other songs that showcase their immense talent.Def Leppard is a hard rock band that can really sing. Most of the songs on these 2 discs truly reflect that. Many of the backing vocals add layers of harmony to Joe Elliot's lead vocals. Many of the songs also reflect what the Leps learned from working with Mutt Lange for several albums. The liner notes, with snippets on each song from the band members, show the progression of how the guys learned to tear apart a song and put it back together. This is reflected in tracks from "Pyromania" and later. What resulted is truly a stack of hard rock classics with multiple guitar and vocal layers as well as high production values. No wonder it takes these guys several years to put out an album. The songs are not in a chronological order, but who really cares! This is a rocking 2 cd set and the pacing and song selection just makes one want to crank it up in the house or the car. The cover art is definitely improved over the "Best of" set from Europe and reflects the classic covers of "Pyromania," "Hysteria," and "Adrenalize." Truly, this is "The Definitive Collection" of Def Leppard material. However, the band is still going strong, so in a couple decades, we may get volume 2.

New songs... old songs... etc.,

I use to be a huge fan of Def Leppard for the past 20 years, but this compilation made me realize that I only loved the old stuff, not the new. The compliation is great & pretty complete! I adore all their work from 80's & 90's but the new songs... not so sure!

This was the first release of Def Leppard's I ever owned, and it was a launch pad into a full-blown love of this band. It covers just about everything they've ever touched upon, and odds are if you love these songs, you'll love the eras they represent in this band's career.

The best and most comprehensive Def Leppard collection money can buy,

Def Leppard pretty much ruled the 1980's, they were one of the biggest and most popular bands and also one of the best ones in my opinion, they even gave quite a few pop artists a run for their money on the charts. If you lived in the 80's, chances are you remember the U.K. band or at least have heard of them and maybe heard some of their songs. Released in 2005, Rock of Ages, the compilation named after one of the band's best songs covers Def Leppard's entire career up until then on two discs. Everything this greatest hits album is well done, of courses some songs should have made the cut instead of this one and so on but it is damn near perfect (plus the cover artwork looks fantastic!). With new liner notes and all, this is very worth it as it has all the Leppard someone could want and more. Personally I own most of the albums but Rock of Ages was all I needed and wanted for some time. If you only wish to have a handful of the band's best songs (and if these songs are mostly from the band's most successful album, Hysteria) then maybe you should go with the older collection, Vault. However if you're looking for more Leppard and a bigger and more comprehensive look at the band's career you absolutely can't go wrong here. This is how a "Best of" album should be made, it's an example to follow when it comes to hits collection.Rock of Ages includes the obvious hits form their biggest albums Pyromania and Hysteria, those that should be on a hits album like "Pour Some Sugar On Me", "Hysteria", "Love Bites", "Armageddon It" "Photograph", "Animal" and so on. But having two discs allows for a deeper a look at Leppard's career so what listeners get are not just the hits but songs from the first two albums and the band's less successful albums. There are some Def Leppard albums that are considered better than other but having songs from every album up to that point is always nice and gives more comprehensive view of the band's career (The last album released at that point was "X" in 2002). One thing I really appreciate of this "best of" collection is how it includes "Bringin' on the Heartbreak" and "Switch 625" from High `N' Dry and they blend into each other just like they did on the original album. Things to note: "Two Steps Behind" is the acoustic version and "Pour Some Sugar On Me" and "Rocket" are both the video edits. I miss some songs but I think most of what should have been here is here. I think "Hello America", a song from the first album who shows the band was already desiring to conquer America, should've been included but that's just my personal opinion. The band's 1995 compilation Vault was not horrible but it obviously didn't cover enough of the band's career and the early years were largely ignored. Plus it covered too much of the Hysteria album (a great album but too much of it and not enough of the other albums). In 2004 Best of Def Leppard was released and it was a bit better covering more of the band's albums and the two disc edition was excellent, however this Best of was not released in North America (we got Rock of Ages the following year instead). If I did my own Def Leppard compilation it would be pretty much like Rock of Ages with a few changes here and there, basically the best is here. This is how a greatest hits album should be done; it should cover a band's whole career with not just the hits but also the early stuff and give an overall idea of the band to the listener. Some people will want just the hits and that's fine, in some cases Vault might be the best option but for those who want more Leppard and are looking to go deeper in the band's back catalog of albums this is it. 5/5, of course not everyone's favorites will be here and maybe some songs that weren't included should have made the cut but this is almost always the case with these "greatest hits" packages. For your money this probably your best bet. |
