5.0 out of 5 stars The best collection out there,
This review is from: The Essential Michael Jackson (Rm) (2CD) (Audio CD)This is the best Michael Jackson greatest hits you'll find for a reasonable price (unless you want to shell out money for "The Ultimate Collection"). It's the only collection on a single or double CD that contains hits from The Jackson 5, The Jacksons, and Michael's solo career released in North America.
Pretty much all of the big hits are on here, although some are mysteriously missing such as "I'll Be There", "Dancing Machine", "Mama's Pearl" and "Scream" (which is strange because the full album version of "Dangerous" is on here when it wasn't on even a single). Its inclusion is most likely because Michael performed "Dangerous" quite a bit and it is a well-known song amongst his fan base for that reason. But for this to take precedence over the aforementioned missing hits is a bit odd.
I also agree with other reviewers that some more hits from "HIStory" and "Invincible" could have been included on here for a more well-rounded perspective.
But as with all greatest hits packages, this is marketed towards casual fans and not hardcore fans like me. And it contains all of the huge signature MJ hits that need to be on here, so on that note it succeeds.
I buy every Michael Jackson release, and even though I own all of these songs on other releases, this is a nice addition to my collection. I personally like the use of radio edits for a lot of songs because the album versions for some (such as "Will You Be There") are a little too long for my liking.

5.0 out of 5 stars All the hits,
This review is from: The Essential Michael Jackson (Rm) (2CD) (Audio CD)I never really appreciated MJ in the past, I've always been into the hard rock/metal but I now realize how great he is and was with the Jackson 5, holy crap he could sing back then! This 2 disk cd has all his great feel good hits and a few others. If you can't afford all his albums, this disk has a good chunk of awesome MJ and Jackson 5 music.

4.0 out of 5 stars 5 Stars for the 1st Cd, 3 Stars for the 2nd,
This review is from: The Essential Michael Jackson (Rm) (2CD) (Audio CD)Michael Jackson's latest hits compilation, tries to correct problems of past greatest-hits albums by putting all of his biggest hits in one place, including his time in the Jacksons, and it comes close. The first cd of this compilation is really the essential one. Starting with some of his greatest hits with the Jackson 5, later the Jacksons, while throwing in early solo hits, then finally finishing with all the hits from Off The Wall and Thriller, it's very nearly the greatest hits cd to end all greatest hits cds. Had that first cd been released in 1985 at the height of Michael Jackson mania, it might have gone on to become one of his best selling albums ever.
The problem is really only with the second cd, which covers 1987-onward. Eight songs from the album Bad and another seven from Dangerous seems a bit overkill, especially when only one song is included each from HIStory and Invincible, and nothing from Blood On The Dance Floor. Those three albums may not have been his best, but should have been represented better for a more rounded career overview (The European version of this album fixes this somewhat by adding two extra songs from HIStory while removing the non-hit Dangerous). But why Scream, his duet with sister Janet and one of his biggest hits from the 90's, is missing is a mystery. And including the full length version of Heal The World, with it's childrens' voices intro to the song, seems borderline creepy given MJ's troubles, despite whatever intention he had with the song originally.
However, there are a lot of good songs on the second cd, and tracks like The Way You Make Me Feel and Black Or White still hold up well. But if you own the set, you'll probably find yourself listening to the first cd much more than the second.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really ultimate!!!,
This review is from: The Essential Michael Jackson (Rm) (2CD) (Audio CD)Why there had to be another Michael Jackson Best of-album with a similar tracklist as "History", "Greatest Hits", "Number Ones" and "The Ultimate Collection" remains an open question. But in contrast to the Box Set this album is a lot less expensive. So if you like "The Jackson 5", "The Jacksons" and Michael as a solo artist this is the ideal collection of songs.
The first CD starts off peppy with "I want you back", "ABC" and "The love you save" which are without a doubt the three best songs of the "Jackson 5" and will surely put you in a good mood.
"Got to be there" and "Ben" are two timeless ballads which show young Michael's enormous volume. After that the album is taken to another level by a row of sensational dancefloor tracks like "Shake Your Body" and Michael's first ultimate worldwide hit "Don't stop 'til you get enough", which will truly get every party going. Nevertheless the album even manages to beat this with the never-to-be-beaten baseline of "Billie Jean" and the immensely powerful "Beat It".
The second CD presents seven hits from "Bad" including the fantastic "Man in the Mirror" and the catchy "Smooth Criminal".
This is followed by Michael's biggest hit of the 90s "Black or White" and further great songs from the "Dangerous"-album. Among them classics like the tremendously groovy "Who is it" and the bombast-ballade "Will you be there".
Fortunately the album also includes the two undoubtedly best songs from the "History"-album. The irresistible, furious finale of "Earth Song" is probably the most emotional and most rousing piece of music ever put on CD. Not without reason did the song remain on top of the charts for 7 weeks. The original percussive and guitar-driven "They don't care about us" is no less fabulous.
To sum it up, on this album every great song is followed by another smash and it thereby shows an immense variety of music. The two CDs undenieably demonstrate that most of Jackson's songs are surely timeless. Therefore "The Essential Michael Jackson" is the ultimate album for everyone who likes good music. There is no better.

5.0 out of 5 stars fantastic compelation!,
This review is from: The Essential Michael Jackson (Rm) (2CD) (Audio CD)I, along with many, have been revisiting my love of Michael Jackson's music since his death, and recently purchased this CD. I have a few other "essentials" albums for other artists, and none of them dissappoint. It is a great compelation of Michael's work throughout his career (or life, since they are one in the same), including some Jackson 5 and The Jackson's stuff as well as bits from all of his solo albums. All the hits are there, and many other favorites! I certainly recomend the Essentials of Michael Jackson to anyone looking for a collection of his timeless treasures.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good CD, but there is a better one!,
This review is from: The Essential Michael Jackson (Rm) (2CD) (Audio CD)This CD is the U.S. version of "The Essential Michael Jackson" and it has a lot of good songs on it. However it is missing "Earth Song" and "They Don't Really Care About Us". Despite the fact that the International version of the CD is $10 more I feel that it is a better purchase as it has the above mentioned songs.
Although I feel that the International version of the CD is better I still give the US version four out of five stars becase it has so many good songs and if you don't care for the two above mentioned songs then the US version would probably be a better purchase for you!

5.0 out of 5 stars ooooooooh!!!!!!!,
This review is from: The Essential Michael Jackson (Rm) (2CD) (Audio CD)this is a really good collection, all my faves are here,
except for "history".
the only disappointment for me, is the intro to "don't stop 'til you get enough" is omitted, "the force, it's got a lotta power..... makes me feel like i wanna.........."
as this, with "thriller" is probably my fave MJ song.
aside from that, it delivers....
i also totally love "earth song"
this collection is a fitting testament to MJ the artist.
& showcases his hard work, dedication & artistry.
i find it sad that MJ's reputation has been tainted, but i think the real problem is that through his collosal career MJ missed out on an important part of integrating in society & therefore grew up with a sense of unrealism & seclusion from simple everyday interactions, & he paid this price for his success........

5.0 out of 5 stars All the hits AND a great price!,
This review is from: The Essential Michael Jackson (Rm) (2CD) (Audio CD)Replaced all my Michael Jackson albums and The Jacksons album with this CD. Did not own any Jackson Five albums but now have some of their hits as well thanks to this fantastic collection. Much more space in my entertainment unit now! Could not believe that one CD would include every song that I have ever liked...but it did, plus more! My personal favorites are "Ben" from the early years and "Will You Be There" from the later years, and this CD has both. Although I have always been a fan, like the previous reviewer, I now have a new appreciation for his voice (both boy and man) and his talent. I am also beginning to enjoy songs I never cared for in the past, such as "Dangerous". Like anyone else, I played the CD a lot when first purchased and then it went into storage for a while. I was just recently given a BOSE music system as a gift and started to play the CD again on the BOSE. Wow...a whole new experience...it was like listening to it for the first time! (And no, I am not connected in any way with the BOSE company...just like it very much.) So now I am enjoying this incredible talent once again. I would highly recommend this collection to all Michael Jackson and Jackson Five fans. It's also a great way to introduce someone who is not yet a fan to the wonder that was Michael Jackson. Rest In Peace, Michael and thanks for the memories.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent overview of the king of pop's career (4 1/2 stars),
This review is from: The Essential Michael Jackson (Rm) (2CD) (Audio CD)It's no secret that Michael Jackson was incredibly talented and gifted musician, the fact that he also had a passion for his art must have helped. This two discs collection covering the man's entire career from the time he was a little kid up to his later years as one of the most famous person on this planet. It serves as an example of how great his music was and how it's still amazing today. Few artists have had the impact that MJ had on the music industry, Michael revolutionized it, and in the 1980's Michael was fashion. MJ's certainly has an interesting musical career and The Essential Michael Jackson is all the proof you need, we could go into how Thriller is the best selling album of all time, or how History is the best selling double disc album of all time, or how Blood On The Dance Floor is the best selling remix album... However the point here is not to demonstrate Michael's numerous accomplishments in the music industry, it's how good his music was.
The first 8 songs of this greatest hits album are from Michael's time in the Jackson 5/ Jacksons. Then we get 4 songs from Off The Wall (1979), 7 songs from Thriller (1982), 8 from Bad (1987), 7 from Dangerous (1992) and 1 from both History (1995) and Invincible (2001). All the hits you would expect are here: Don't Stop Till You Get Enough, Billie Jean, Thriller, Bad and much more. There isn't much to say about the songs included, they're all great in their own way and deserving to be on this "essential" collection. Besides the "Ultimate Collection" boxed set, this compilation is by far the most comprehensive look at Michael's career. It covers not only his solo career but his early years as a child with the Jackson 5/ Jacksons which is a nice feature of this compilation disc, Michael Jackson compilations tend to be focused only on his solo career.
I can't hide the fact that I'm a little disappointed that there is only one song from both History and Invincible. Those latter years album were not huge hits for Michael (although History sold very well and went on to become the most successful double disc album of all time) but I still like them both and thought more songs from these albums could/should have been included. They Don't Care About Us and Earth Song are excellent songs from History that would have been excellent to have on a career-spawning collection. From Invincible I think Whatever Happens should have been here and perhaps Butterflies. It's easy to understand why almost nothing from these albums was included, they do not really match the pop "hits" in terms of lyrics or musicality, they are much more personal and less accessible than material from Thriller or Bad for instance. That aside, The Essential Michael Jackson gives buyers what they really want, the hits and more well-known songs. I must add it does a good job at doing so!
The Essential Michael Jackson does an excellent job of going further than your average compilation and offers Michael's hits and some of his best songs. The fact that it covers his entire career is great; you get a proper overview of Jackson's music. For someone who is relatively new to Michael Jackson's music this is really The Essential Michael Jackson. 4.5/5.
