This review is from: Maintenance Pilates for Weight Loss (DVD)
I have found that with the straight pilates programs, like Stott or Gaiam, the instructors show you a move, do it a couple of times and move on. For pilates fans, this might be desirable. But I prefer to really get tired out or at least feel some fatigue in the muscles I am working when I work out. As with all of the Gaiam or Stott workouts I have (and they're primarily the highest level/advanced ones), I feel that the individual exercises on this DVD are good ones, but that you don't do most of them enough in the short half hour workout to make them effective. This workout is not unusual: one set of reps and then move on. I suppose if you did an hour of this sort of thing twice a day for several weeks, your strength would build up. But since I mix cardio, weights, yoga, pilates, stretch, etc. together, I don't find this DVD very useful. It is certainly Ana Caban's more advanced workout. She has some harder moves and the main thing is that in this workout, the pace is faster (if you're like me, you are grateful for this faster pace since so many of these series workouts make you pause and wait for what seems like ages between moves). The workout is a half hour and there is a 'bonus' twenty minute workout, so doing both together gives you more 'reps' as it were. The DVD comes with an accompanying CD for 'travel' workouts. For conventional pilates fans, this is probably a good choice. I do indeed find some of the exercises challenging. In general, though, for people like me who like to feel like they've really worked hard during a workout, I'd suggest looking for Karen Voight and Kari Anderson workouts.
