This review is from: Forerunner (Audio CD)
Having noted that The Cottars had performed such whimsical ditties as Willy Welch's "Right Field" I thought that perhaps the band was heading in a new direction. No fear. This new album is a pure delight, full of Celtic inspired music performed in the true Cape Breton style of the Cottars. The album has everything the group's fans have come to love: Ciarán's virtuosity on the keyboards; Roseanne's talented fiddling; Jimmy's awesome guitar; and Fiona's beautiful vocals. All the required elements are here, but even more than before, the group shows a "tightness" in their approach. They remind me of the musketeers - one for all; all for one. They are certainly becoming mature veterans. The album has great traditional instrumentals and some great songs, especially two by Tom Waits, who wrote "The Briar and the Rose" found on The Cottars' first album. The two are "Hold On" and the poignant "Georgia Lee" which features the vocal talents of Ciarán and Fiona. If you like Celtic music and ,especially, The Cottars, this is a must-have CD.
