two sisters learn to love each other and themselves,
By
This review is from: In Her Shoes (Widescreen) (DVD)
this is the story of two sisters who are polar opposites.Cameron Diazis Maggie Feller,a free spirited loopy party girl with no life track.Toni Collette is rose, her older, wiser, career oriented sister.the two clash about many things, especially Maggie's life style. They have a major blowout and Maggie Disappears.Shirley MacLaine plays a prominent role in the movie, and is responsible for getting the sisters back together.of course before this happens both sisters must realize they need each other and learn other life lessons along the way.once reunited, they begin to understand each other and accept each other and themselves.another feel good,"lets all love one another" movie.preachy to be sure, but still entertaining.the life lessons the girls learn may be deep and profound but the movie itself is not.and it is certainly not original.this movie has been done ad infinitum and ad nauseum.but for a fluff piece,it is okay. 3/5

This is a great movie!,

This movie is great! Cameron Diaz and Toni Collette are sisters trying to get along with one another, but they are exact opposites. Ultimately their love for each other brings them together. Their grandmother (played by Shirley MacLaine) is very funny and steals the movie! I loved the poem by E.E. Cummings so much I typed it on to a card and gave it to my husband for our anniversary! Definately buy this movie!

I was unsure when I initially picked up the DVD. But I was truly, and most pleasantly surprised at how quickly and deeply every character just grew on me. It made me feel and think that that I knew these characters - very well. The story is of two sisters, one who is wayward (Cameron Diaz), without scruples and looking for any and every easy way to get what she wants, all of which tends to be as superficial as her character. She won't think twice before sleeping with her sister's beau. The second sister (Toni Collette)is professionally educated and responsible. And the complete opposite of her sister. Toni's character is insecure because she feels she is unattractive and assumes that any worthwhile man will look past her. The story unfolds with both sisters staying true to their characters and values. In Cameron's character's case of course it is all in the absence of her values. As the film proceeds both sisters arrive at points in their lives where Toni's character begins to find out that men or some men do find her attractive, at more than just a physical level. Cameron's character is confronted by her own abject failures at every level, including in showing some respect for a sister who has kept her off the streets and perhaps the only person who has truly cared for her. Shirley Maclaine plays their grandmother, who has lost contact with the both grand daughters, suddenly finds that she hasn't. A deeply moving, and endearingly brilliant film. With a plot unfolding flawlessly at every level. NOT TO BE MISSED - CHECK IT OUT!!!

Hardly A Family Movie,
By J. Jaeger (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: In Her Shoes (Widescreen) (DVD)
Amazon's synopsis of "In Her Shoes" refers to the film as a rewarding family comedy; however, I found nothing family oriented nor funny about this movie. As I was only able to tolerate the first half hour of this abomination, I will limit my commentary to that portion of the movie. The film opens with Diaz having sex in a public toilet (at least until she throws up) and Collette being sexually harrassed by her boss. Diaz's character is an illiterate imbecile who gets by on her looks and on stealing; she is so stupid that she accepts a ride from two strange men she meets on the street, narrowly escaping being raped. Collette's character, while a lawyer, is so completely lacking in self esteem and confidence that she sleeps with her letch of a boss; her boss is such a creep that he ogles her sister, then goes back to have sex with Diaz while Collette is stuck working late. As if the unappealing characters in the movie were not bad enough, it seems to be little more than a vehicle for showing Diaz in her underwear (who looks like she hasn't eaten in about six months). And to compare Curtis Hanson's generic and formulaic direction with the work of Howard Hawks is absolutely ludicrous. |
