3.0 out of 5 stars On behalf of Jules Verne fans everywhere, I say "What the... ?", Oct. 27 2008
This review is from: 20 000 Leagues Under the Sea (DVD)
Wow - this miniseries is a scattershot mess of poor ideas and weak execution. Professor Arronax is no longer a middle-aged Frenchman, but now Patrick Dempsey with a robotic hand. Conseil, his longtime valet, has been replaced by a newly created (and poorly conceived) daughter. Ned Land will be familiar to fans of Due South in the US and several Canadian productions as square-jawed Paul Gross. Michael Caine plays the villain of the piece, who readers of the novel will know was a much-maligned Hindu prince. Taken by its own merits, the script is weak, characterization bad, the plot is dull and the production is cheap. This is for completists only - or perhaps those who wondered what happened to Patrick Dempsey prior to Grey's Anatomy brought him back to the spotlight.
