4.0 out of 5 stars Easy to use watch/heart rate monitor, Dec 22 2011
This review is from: Timex Unisex Ironman T5G941 Grey Polyurethane Quartz Watch with Digital Dial (Sports)
The BASICS:
-This device consists of a wrist-watch and a heart-rate sensor which is strapped around your chest. The sensor continuously measures your heart-rate and sends the information to your watch where it is displayed. Before the sensor can measure your heart-rate, you must moisten it slightly using some water. You can at anytime switch between displaying the time/date or displaying your heart-rate. You can also use the watch without the sensor, if you just want to display the time and the date (use it as an ordinary watch).

-The watch can display time (hours and minutes, but NO seconds) and date (month and day, but NO year)
-The heart rate monitor can display your heart rate in beats-per-minute, and after you finish your exercise, you can display the following information from the internal memory of the watch:
-how long you exercised
-your average heart rate during the exercise
-your peak heart rate during the exercise

The GOOD:
-Very easy to use, if you just want a simple, but accurate heart rate monitor that is not expensive, get this one.
-The buttons on the watch (3 in total) are almost 1/2 inch wide, so you can easily press them with your index finger.
-The display is large and easy to read.
-There is a night-light you can activate for reading the display in the dark.
-The chest-strap with the heart-rate sensor and the watch look and feel like they are made of good quality material.
-The chest-strap is easy to take on/off and feels comfortable to wear.

The BAD:
-Other than the features I listed here, the watch has no other functions. For example you can NOT measure how many calories you burnt, you can NOT use it as a stop-watch, etc.
-If you want to monitor your heart rate, you MUST wear the chest-strap with the heart-rate sensor. This is a disadvantage, because I know that there are some strapless heart-rate monitor watches in the market.
-On the watch, you can set the month and the day of the month (example: 11-29 for November 29) but NOT the year. Since some months have 31 days, while some have 29, this means that you will have to re-set the date every once in a while.

This heart rate watch is very easy to use. It was my first one and bought it based on the other reviews. Strap is very comfortable you don't even feel it on.
There are no extras on this watch but I find for a beginner it is perfect.

5.0 out of 5 stars Does what it is supposed to do, March 30 2012

I have been using heart rate monitors for over 15years. I have used Polar, a generic version and an older Timex unit. Eventually they all stop working. This one does the simple required basic functions.... heart rate, timer, on/off, time of exercise , average heart rate and maximum for the workout. Both receiver and sensor have user changeable batteries... a must. The chest strap is comfortable and adjustable.
A simple, low cost item that does what it is supposed to do.
Highly recommended for that purpose.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great product with exactly what a person need for monitoring, Jan. 22 2013

For some the TIMEX brand might mean cheap products. I disagree with that....I believe TIMEX is one of the better companies....making high quality products and selling them at a very reasonable market value. The Heart Rate Monitor is exactly what 80-90% of users need. I would say go spend more money on fancier devices if you are a pro athlete or in a high endurance sport like triathlon. Otherwise this is the perfect item.

Excellent product for training sessions. I have learned a lot about my body wearing this watch.
A professional athlete might want more out of such a product but for the average man like me
training one hour a day it is easy to use and gives me all the information I need.
