Impressions of the blu-ray release of Running Scared,

Running Scared (2006)A 2009 Alliance blu-ray release Video: 1080i, 1.78:1 aspect ratio, 2h 2min Audio: Englsh 5.1 DTS HD-MA, English and French Dolby Digital 5.1 No subtitles No special features I always get a kick out of this movie. I find that if I'm in the mood for watching a fast-paced, hardcore film, this will do the trick. I love the visual style of the film; I thought it was pretty neat. It really gives the movie that extra kick. Picture quality...before I start with this, I want to point out that the aspect ratio has been opened up on this blu-ray relase to a 1.78:1, whereas the DVD version has an aspect ratio of 2.35:1. Some people may not like this decision of Alliance doing this, but for me it was fine. Honestly, having the picture opened up a bit sort of gave a more in-your-face feeling to the film and made it a bit more intense. But if this isn't for you, in Germany they released Running Scared on blu-ray and it's 2.35:1 and is in 1080p (it has no special features either though). Now with that out of the way, the picture quality on this release was pretty good. The film was never made to look pretty, so it can be grainy, stylized, and have over-blown contrast. The enitre film isn't like this, but a lot of it is. But even with that said, detail showed nicely. The image still looked sharp. There were a few duller shots that could've looked better, but they weren't too bad. I must add, the drawings at the end during the credits were really nice in HD; those looked awesome. In the end, I'd give the video quality on this release a 4 outta 5 Audio was outstanding on this release. Sound effects were great, dialogue was very clear, bass use was perfect; just an all around great mix. 4.5 outta 5 So in closing, if you don't mind 1080i and an opened up aspect ratio then I definitely recommend this release.

running scared is non-stop action from the get go.it isentertaining, but seemed to be missing something, though i can't say what.this movie did not really distinguish itself from others of the genre.there is nothing new here, and maybe that's what's missing.the movie could have benefited if there had been a twist of some sort.as it is this is standard action movie.i did like the touches of humour sprinkled throughout, which was good because the movie is so dark in tone.i realize the filmmakers were probably going for realism, but it wasn't necessary to have a much swearing as they did, particularly the f-bomb.the acting was good, though not brilliant by any stretch.i did think that Vera Farmiga was excellent in the small role that she had.the humorous parts in the movie reminded me of(oddly enough)of "analyze this",a comedy which ironically i did not like.though i liked running scared,it could have been a better movie, certainly without so much foul language.if you are easily offended by strong language, you might want to stay away from this movie.it is also quite violent, though no more than any other movie of its type.not for everybody 3/5 |
