5.0 out of 5 stars The greatest movie ever made
Buy, buy, buy! Think of movie genius's and you think of names such as Scorsese, Kubrick, Tarantino and arguably now Peter Jackson, well you can add Valerie Breiman to that list! This is quite simply the funniest, most rib-tickling movie of all time. Pure Sandler genius - before he sold out and got all commercial on us.

So I really wouldnt recomend this to anyone.

1.0 out of 5 stars Zero stars for this farce, May 19 2004

Adam Sandler has made some relatively funny movies in his time. This one is most assuredly not one of them. I realize that this film was one of his earliest projects - long before he hit his stride & could dictate what films he wished to contribute to. In the case of this movie, that point is exceedingly obvious.

It seems like this DVD tries to be funny by being unfunny. That's kind of like trying to satisfy your appetite by starving yourself. Nothing in this film is funny - period. It almost appears that it is deliberately that way (kind of ironic for a comedy, wouldn't you say?).

The only redeeming quality of this movie is that it does have some fairly attractive women wearing bikinis. If it were not for that, I would give this one negative one stars instead of zero stars.

There are some other Sandler movies that are of fairly high quality. Do not make the mistake of believing this is one of them. In fact, if you happen to see this DVD in your shopping cart, be sure & throw it overboard!

This is quite simply the funniest, most rib-tickling movie of all time. Pure Sandler genius - before he sold out and got all commercial on us.

Every now and then a movie comes along that is touched by sheer genius, Going Overboard is one of these movies. The jokes come thick and fast, I could barely catch a breath I was laughing so hard. The scene where Dickie's hat gets blown overboard is quite simply hilarious.

Also, watch out for some really funny guest appearances from Billy Bob Thornton and Billy Zane and possibly the greatest twist-ending ever - think Usual Suspects crossed with The Sixth Sense crossed with King Lear with a suggestion of American Pie thrown in for good measure.

A guaranteed laugh fest, you need to own this DVD if you like movies such as Happy Gilmore, House on Sority Row, Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, Animal Farm, The Matrix, Citizen Kane, The Godfather Trilogy and Combat Academy. I cannot put into words how much of an impact this movie will have on your outlook on life, it is a 20th century fable that is more relevent today than ever.

Ah, Going Overboard. The movie that would have never been released had Sandler not found success on SNL and Billy Madison. Yes, this movie is THAT bad, it makes Happy Gilmore look like Shakespear in comparison. Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge fan of Sandler's movies... just not THIS one.
A few minutes into the movie, Sandler pretty much admits to the audience that this was a "no-budget" flick and they were filming it because they happened to have access to a boat that day. And the movie goes downhill from there, if that's possible. Adam's character Shecky's quest to become the ship comedian is somehow tied with a revenge plot hatched by some third world dictator, and everything is slapped together by many scenes of women in bikinis and the same damn exterior shot of the ship used over and over and over. Despite how bad this movie is, you can definately see the seeds of what would become staples in Adam Sandler movies, such as the completely bizzare side characters and pathetically unhip bad guys. There are a few actual laughs in this movie, which is due from the movie not taking itself seriously, and be sure to look out for cast memeber that would later become regulars in future Sandler movies.
Only hardcore Sandler fans would want this movie, if only just to see how their favorite star started out. Everyone else, stay far far away and get "The Waterboy" or "Mr. Deeds" instead.

1.0 out of 5 stars Is this a "Film School" Project? -- Sandler Gets an "F", Oct 27 2003

I always considered myself a fan of Adam Sandler's work, especially his original comedy material. This film is a sad attempt at being funny, while desperately trying to make a statement. The "f" word is thrown around like it's in the top 5 of the Englsh vocabulary. A main character's hacking giggle becomes an annoying pain in your ears. The gratuitous T&A scenes, along with borderline X-rated making out become tiresome. The lack of a general storyline wrap up the verdict: This "high school film project" needs a major do-over. Until then the grade is a solid "F". Not even college students are thaaaat desperate for a cheezy laugh. Sandler has hit bottom with this one. Toss this bomb overboard and forget it!

1.0 out of 5 stars Ha Ha huh?, May 21 2003

My roomate got this and said it stunk and gave it to me. I thought hey it's got Adam Sandler in it, i like so bad its good movies... I have nothing to do today, I'll give it a chance.

It tries, it doesnt take it self seriously, it isnt supposed to be good, and it just doesnt work. On any level it just was not working. I can not see why this movie has fans besides featuring some actors early work, it does not stand as an independent work.
It does not have any humor in it, bad joke after bad joke. As for T&A (I mean it is also known as babes ahoy) there is no action going on.

It was not funny, it was sad.

I got it for free and I feel cheated.

1.0 out of 5 stars What is wrong with you people, May 12 2003

What exactly is wrong with you people I have seen this movie it's on my list of worst movies ever which consists of three movies one of which I can't remember right know. If you think it's just because I'm not an adam sandler fan your wrong the only reason I watched this movie is because I am an Adam Sandler fan. You know how some Movies you have to watch twice to understand. If you watch this one twice you'll probably be put into a comma that is if you are not in one already from the first watching. Oh if you think I don't have the right sense of humor I liked pauly shore's bio-dome and jury duty and a multitude of other supposedly bad movies.

5.0 out of 5 stars Future Cult classic, Dec 13 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Going Overboard (DVD)
If you like movies that are soo bad that they become good, this is the film for you. we are talking liquid Sky bad, but with a better story. The low production values and the 'playing for the camera' make the movie very campy and fun. I found myself laughing at the film because it was just over the top bad.

Sandler does a decent job on the film, but the real star is the boat that they somehow managed to con their way onto. Even the DVD has fun little jokes, like starting each chapter with the exact same shot.

if you are looking for Happy Gilmore laughs go elsewhere, if you want to see what will be a cult classic, this is the film.

5.0 out of 5 stars Two thumbs up! A classic. Cult classic that is., Oct 7 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Going Overboard (DVD)
I found this movie to be a future cult classic. I know that there was little or no money spent on the filming, but it gives it that Blair Witch feel. Keep an eye on crowd. There are many guests that keep popping up. I look for this film to be released at the theaters for its 25th or 50th anniversery. It is that good. Sure the production values were low, but you that can not stop a good story from drawing you in. It may be the work of the writters or the work of the very funny Adam Sandler. Who knows, this may end up being the movie of the Millinium.
