5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Debut Solo Album Ever
Phil Collins is one of the best musicians in the world, and his first album is just a classic. This DVD is the perfect guide to Face Value. Interesting and entertaining, it's packed full of information about the making of the album with footage from concerts and Phil performing bits of them (on piano and drums). The only negative is the ommission of 'You Know What I Mean'...

If you have the CD then you need to buy this DVD. Fantastic.

5.0 out of 5 stars Understand The Potential Phil Collins Once Had, Jan 21 2001

Face Value is a classic album and this shows why. I loved the way the whole documentary was put together. The insight into tunes like 'The Roof Is Leaking' and others was a thrill for this long time fan. Unfortunately, one also understands why this album will never be topped. Most major artists have their own 'White Album' - timeless and risky. Face Value was Phil's.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very well done, April 6 2000
By A Customer
An excellent production that has Phil (in very high quality recent footage) walking us through how the famous "Face Value" album was put together. Comments from most of the session musicians featured. Very high quality production, much better than I expected, well worth it for any Phil Collins fan who thinks the first album was in many ways the best. Recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exactly what a true fan expects!, Feb 16 2000

This is a must for all true fans! I have watched it 7 times in a row and can't get enough of it. It's almost like being part of making the album. If you ever wondered what the origional title of "I Missed Again" was, you will get a chance to hear a bit of the origional demo tapes. If you want to hear "Hand in Hand" being played backwards on a track of "Tommorow Never Knows" this is it! There is so much detail! Hugh Padgham, the Engineer, sits with Phil and plays back individual tracks from the original tapes...and they explain how it was done. Includes guitar by Eric Clapton and strings by Ravi Shankar! It even has a previously unrelaesed full length music video of "If Leaving Me is Easy" as well as a clip of Phil at the piano doing "Plaese Don't Ask"...so emotional he almost cries! If you want the standard music videos watch VH1. If you want to really know how one of the greatest albums of the 20th Century was put together, GET THIS DVD!

5.0 out of 5 stars The first is still the best!, Feb 15 2000

This review is from: Phil Collins Face Value (VHS Tape)
This documentary is a very insightful look at Phil Collins' first solo album. It is a rare look into the events surrounding the writing and recording of this "classic album." It includes candid interviews from the musicians who played on the album and Phil's own comments and memories of the session. No, it is not a collection of music videos, but if you are interested in the real story behind Phil's greatest work, it is a must!

1.0 out of 5 stars This isn't what you think!, Feb 12 2000

Beware! This is only a documentary. While the product description implies that songs are "included", no complete song is performed on this DVD. Don't expect, as I did, that this is a compilation of music video performances of the songs on the great album of the same name. It's interesting for Phil Collins devotees, but does not really contain uninterrupted performances of the music.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Classic Album, Feb 5 2000

This DVD is another in the Classic Album Collection Series 2. Made in 1999 and including interviews with band members who helped make the album into the hit is was. Phil Collins is my hero , but dont be fooled this is a quality doco.Covering most of the songs from the album and one that ended up as a Genesis track written originally for Face Value. This version includes a great version of If Leaving Me is Easy which was cut from a live concert in Dallas 1995. Phil spends some time explaining how tracks got made , how musicians were chosen to play and has some rare home video footage. The closing sequence is the drum part to In the Air live in Paris 1997. A classic album and a must have for any Phil Collins fan.
