5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best French movies made
When I first saw the movie I was hooked on the spot. The cast and the acting was good along with the sets and camerawork.Jeanne Moreau and Gerard Depardieu are a perfect match as mother and son in the film. But I wanted to see more of Jeanne Moreau in the film and want to see more highs and lows in the mother-son relationship. The scene which nearly made me cry was Moreau's...

1.0 out of 5 stars Balzac: a badly acted, weak story of a dull life
If it weren't for the weak story, the bad acting, the awful over-dubbing,the pathetic direction, and a myriad other flaws, this could rise as high as to be unwatchable. As it is, I could barely stand to watch it - it works as well as melatonin, except that you wake up with a headache and a deep guilt for having wasted a couple of hours of an all too short life.Balzac: A...

This is a great movie, but there is no French audio and the dubbing is terrible, especially the actor who dubbed Depardieu, a man with a wonderful voice. Spend the extra movie and buy the Fox Lorber version in the origninal French. I'd give that a 5 star rating. Wonderful biographical movie of Balzac. The French are good at these sorts of things. The acting is first rate.

The scene which nearly made me cry was Moreau's character at the door asking for her son's forgiveness.Give Jeanne Moreau a good script and she will give you your money's work.

4.0 out of 5 stars BALZAC: A PASSIONATE LIFE., July 27 2011

This is a great story with the best of French actors and tries to give us an overview of the excessive man who wrote The Human Comedy in 30 volumes. And his great enthusiasm for life. Depardieu succeeds in spades.
For me it had only one flaw. It was unilingual ENGLISH.How was I to know given the cast.
No problem but it would have been nice to know. Normally most movies are in English,French, often Spanish, sometimes Portuguese,Mandarin or German.
Amazon needs to develop more sensitivity in LABELLING it's products so the customer knows what he is about to receive.

3.0 out of 5 stars Un film français en anglais ???, Oct 15 2010
This review is from: Balzac: A Passionate Life (DVD)
Incroyable ! Dommage !

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, Sep 11 2011
This review is from: Balzac: A Passionate Life (DVD)
Très beau film sur la vie de Balzac, mais j'aurais préféré l'avoir en français. Un film d'une durée d'un peu plus de trois heures qui résume de façon satisfaisante la vie d'Honoré de Balzac.
