5.0 out of 5 stars The best yoga DVD out there
Shiva Rea is perhaps the most inspiring yoga instructor out there (that's available on DVDs, as I'm sure there are many amazing yoga instructors teaching in local yoga studios).

This past week, I purchased Shiva Rea's Fluid Power and have tried a couple of the practices, and all I can say is...this is the best yoga DVD out there (for those looking to try...

3.0 out of 5 stars GREAT FEATURES BUT NOT MY STYLE
I really wanted to like this DVD and over the past year I've tried to incorporate it into my exercise regime unfortunately I just can't get into Shiva's free-flow interpretive style of Yoga and FLUID POWER sits on the shelf (in favour of Rodney Yee) unless I'm feeling very creative and a little drunk.

I've been practicing Yoga for many years now and would...

Shiva Rea is perhaps the most inspiring yoga instructor out there (that's available on DVDs, as I'm sure there are many amazing yoga instructors teaching in local yoga studios).

This past week, I purchased Shiva Rea's Fluid Power and have tried a couple of the practices, and all I can say is...this is the best yoga DVD out there (for those looking to try something different). It's so distinctive and so beautiful (the poses and the scenery). Some of the reviews I've read say that what Shiva Rea teaches on this DVD is not yoga, and I completely disagree. What Shiva Rea teaches is EXACTLY what yoga truly is. This is raw yoga (it's a "fluid" practice, where the poses move you like water), perhaps like the poses taught in India for many past generations, not the mechanical "mainstream" yoga taught in North America today.

If you are looking for more "tradtional" yoga poses, I highly recommend Shiva Rea's Yoga Shakti.

So if you've been practicing yoga for several years and are bored of your routine, then I highly recommend trying one of Shiva Rea's inspiring DVDs. She'll take you to another - spiritually moving - level, and perhaps rekindle your love of yoga.

5.0 out of 5 stars Shiva, Jan 23 2008

This review is from: Rea;Shiva Fluid Power Vinyasa (DVD)
I own three of her DVDs and rate this one as one of the best. It provides a total workout and it is part of my regular exercise schedule. For flexibility and back stretches it flows. Rea is inspiring and I don't have to drive to a studio for my daily workout.

3.0 out of 5 stars GREAT FEATURES BUT NOT MY STYLE, Nov 7 2009

I really wanted to like this DVD and over the past year I've tried to incorporate it into my exercise regime unfortunately I just can't get into Shiva's free-flow interpretive style of Yoga and FLUID POWER sits on the shelf (in favour of Rodney Yee) unless I'm feeling very creative and a little drunk.

I've been practicing Yoga for many years now and would consider myself to be an intermediate to advanced Yogi who mostly practices at home so I've done my fair share of Yoga DVDs and although this is a great workout it's just not for me. On the positive side though there is a ton to discover in the 213 minutes contained here all easily accessible through the awesome Yoga Matrix menu, which allows you to `create your own custom practice' (this feature should be included on all workout DVDs) The music is really good too with audio options for instruction or music only, although personally I don't know how this workout would be possible without instruction. This has also been beautifully filmed with amazing scenery and there are tons of special features included on the bonus disk.

Shiva Rea is a fantastic instructor, once she stops free-flowing. Unfortunately most of this practice is un-traditional and I couldn't follow or get into her original, innovative style, finding myself lost unless I could see the TV (at all times) and continually facing the wrong direction or using the wrong arm or leg and straining my neck to see what she was up to next.

I would also consider this to be an advanced workout and beginners should be warned that Shiva flows quickly from one position to the next with some very challenging and complex bindings and poses and unless you're fluent in the ancient language of Sanskrit or a Yoga instructor you'll be lost with the amount of Sanskrit used here without translation.

This is a really popular workout and I envy those that appreciate this style, I guess I'm just a traditionalist when it comes to my Yoga practice.

3.0 out of 5 stars Visually impressive but "fluid" yoga style not for me, Mar 24 2009

Although I appreaciate the scenery, music and innovative approach, the "fluid" style is not for me. Be aware that this video is fairly advanced and poses move quickly without a lot of variations for beginners. I find she moves too quickly through the poses to let any of them really sink in, or to realize the real benefits of the practice. There is an older DVD by Ali McGraw that is far better (although much less content); it has a similar style - music and scenerywise - but better routine. Like I said, its personal preference - overall just a bit too "flowy" and not enough focus on technique for me. I do like the matrix format on this DVD which allows you to choose your routine, however, I have not found that it has become part of my regular yoga practice.

2.0 out of 5 stars Nice Visuals but Lousy Yoga Instruction, Jun 12 2009

I was so disappointed with these DVDs. I really like Shiva Rae so I trusted that these would be of good value. They are beautifully shot but that's it. They are hard to follow as the focus is not on instruction but rather the flow of the music, surroundings and in and out zooms of Shiva in various contortions. Very hard to follow. I wasted my money.

This is not my kind of yoga. Someone else may appreciate this different style, but I didn't. It is not bad, just not for me.

Shiva Rea never ceases to amaze me. This dvd allows you to let go of all tension in the body by moving spontaneously. The workout is challenging and gets to every muscle in the body. I also own Shiva's Yoga Shakti and love it, but the movements in Fluid Power really make you feel as though you are moving like water and becoming one with the earth. Highly recommended.
