5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Rice Cooker, Dec 30 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Zojirushi NP-HBC10 Induction Heating System Rice Cooker and Warmer (Kitchen)
This Zojirushi NP-HBC10 rice cooker is fantastic. I bought it to replace my 10-year old National. Rice has never tasted this good! The only thing I don't like is the non-retractable cord. But I would still give it a five star 'cause I love the rice it cooks for me.
Good price from Amazon.ca. Don't go Chinatown or T&T!!! Once you see the Amazon price, you can see how ridiculous their profits are!

This machine is a jewel. Rice is not hard to cook, but requires supervision and cleaning of the "rice water" that inevitably bubbles out onto the stovetop. If you're like me, you also regularly end up with some rice overcooked at the bottom of the pan. No more with this machine. Rice cooks automatically after following the easy to read lines adjusting liquid volume to rice volume. You can even set the timer in the morning so the rice starts cooking before you come home. An important benefit for me is the warmer feature that keeps the rice at serving temperature for roughly 1-2 hours after its ready (and in good serving condition). This takes rice out of the equation when timing the other parts of the meal. Several good books here on Amazon have recipes for various simple and exotic rice recipes, including risotto (a more involved experience). The different menu options are invaluable including brown rice and other grains. There is an option for porridge, that you can setup the night before going to bed and wake up to porridge in the morning. An important thing to consider is the time needed to "optimally" cook rice, which includes a soaking period. Depending on the type of rice and quantity wanted the time required to cook rice from start to finish can reach 90mins. This can be shortened by using a quick-cook cycle that can take as little as 25 mins. This size is great for a family of 4.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just the Best, April 5 2012

This rice cooker replaces one of the same brand that we had a few years ago. The old one died on us but, because the brand has such a good name I decided to give it another try. Frankly, I cannot say enough about what a good rice cooker this is. I love brown rice but getting it nice and fluffy is actually not so easy. This cooker makes brown rice so scrumptiously that you will want to eat it every day. I've been using the cooker for three months and I have no criticisms at all!

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth every penny, Mar 7 2012
This review is from: Zojirushi NP-HBC10 Induction Heating System Rice Cooker and Warmer (Kitchen)
I had used National and Rival rice cookers for years. Being an Asian, I eat rice almost everyday, but it is not my favorite food until I bought this one over a month ago.

This rice cooker cooks rice in about the same amount of time like others, but the rice tastes better than before. They are beautifully white and fluffy. Cooking and eating rice become simple.

Btw it is cheaper from Amazon than T&T supermarket.

5.0 out of 5 stars ninja cooker, Feb 10 2012
This review is from: Zojirushi NP-HBC10 Induction Heating System Rice Cooker and Warmer (Kitchen)
This cooker has everything you could want - it schedules timimg based on when you want it done (brilliant), can germinate brown rice (no water changes and waiting), does oatmeal as well, does rice perfectly... and sings you songs. Add the measurement scales on the bowl, the temperature control and inductive cooking (more controllable than gas) and the non stick - left oatmeal in it for 48 hours and it rinsed out - yeah, it costs more than your average rice cooker, but this is a lifetime cooker - I use it about 5 times per week between rice and oatmeal, so in ten years it will cost ten cents each time.
I do have a penchant for buying the best, but it has never steered me wrong.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quality, Jan 1 2012
This review is from: Zojirushi NP-HBC10 Induction Heating System Rice Cooker and Warmer (Kitchen)
Excellent rice maker. This one is made in Japan and the quality is outstanding. Wait to you feel the weight of the rice bowl.

Love the kitschy tunes that play when the rice is done.

Bought this after a friend used his for two years. Best on the market.

5.0 out of 5 stars The melodies have grown on me, Jan 30 2011
This review is from: Zojirushi NP-HBC10 Induction Heating System Rice Cooker and Warmer (Kitchen)
I bought this because it is made in Japan, isn't bright white and makes GABA rice. I have never had brown rice that was the texture of perfect white rice before. This machines does it, brilliantly. There is a melody when you press start and one to let you know the rice is done which irritated me at first, but now I quite like them -- they are part of the charm of this excellent little unit. Even my dogs know which one means the rice is done (we add a bit of GABA rice to their otherwise raw diet and their love love love it). I love the timer feature and use that to have the GABA ready for breakfast time... I quickly learned to work in when the "aroma" starts into the time because the dogs would wake up at 4am in the morning because it was starting to smell good in the kitchen. The unit is small and discreet looking enough that I can keep it up on my counter all the time. I have a white Zojirushi that I got tired of lugging in and out of the drawer (we make rice every day) and the colour of this is low key which was part of the appeal. Today's homes, with their open kitchen concepts, mean we have to 'hide' evidence of our day to day living in case someone drops in and thinks we're slobs or some such nonsense, and that effects a lot of small appliance purchasing decisions.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Royal Royce of Rice cookers, Feb 14 2012
This review is from: Zojirushi NP-HBC10 Induction Heating System Rice Cooker and Warmer (Kitchen)
This cooker has everything you could want - it schedules timimg based on when you want it done It can cook brown rice (no water changes and waiting). The rice cooker will do oatmeal. I am still working on making the perfect oatmeal for breakfast but I hope I am getting closer. I haven't gotten yet to the standards of store bought oatmeal yet. I does costs more than your average rice cooker, but this is a lifetime cooker - I use it every other day between rice and oatmeal. It's easy to clean and has a decent size footprint so it doesn't take as much space as you would think.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing, use it every day, April 17 2013

This review is from: Zojirushi NP-HBC10 Induction Heating System Rice Cooker and Warmer (Kitchen)
I've used my new zojirushi every day since it arrived. I got the NP-HBC10 and I normally cook for two.

Before I got it I made rice either in the microwave or on the stovetop. The results were inconsistent, I never served rice to guests because I never knew how it would turn out. Now I have perfect rice every time. I served it at Easter dinner to my fussy family.

I don't cook white rice but I've had guests who don't usually like brown rice and they LOVE the rice I make in the zoji. It makes the best quinoa I've ever tasted. I tried a few other grains (kamut, wheat berries) but didn't like the taste or texture. If I ever get tired of rice maybe I'll try again with pre-soaking.

I have porridge every morning, the real thing, not instant :b. Before the zojirushi I had to get up, measure everything out, bring it to a boil, stir it, then let it simmer while I caught a few more zzzzzs, showered, dressed, etc. now I just set it up the night before and wake up to perfectly cooked porridge. I'm trying different combinations of grains and everything has been good. Steel cut oats, red river cereal, oat bran, brown rice farina, rolled oats, scotch oats, hemp hearts.

The timer is brilliant. I can set it up anytime and it's always ready on time. The keep warm cycle is very handy. I add a few diced veggies or dried fruit to rice or porridge during the keep warm.

I haven't yet tried cooking legumes in the zoji, but I plan to try small ones like lentils, soaked split peas, adzukis. I worry about frothing, but I suppose a bit of olive oil would prevent that.

It was very expensive, but we have no regrets because we get so much use out of it. I would be embarrassed to tell anyone how much I spent on it though.

My only issue is that I have to make 2-3 days' worth of porridge at a time because of the minimum quantity for porridge. My husband doesn't eat porridge so there's always a lot left over.
