Growing up watching Transformers, I was pretty excited to see this movie. It wasn't dissappointing although I did expect maybe a bit more than what I saw. The effects are stunning and I did enjoy the characters. The plot was a little weak in my opinion and I was hoping to see more of the transformers that got together to make the big ones like the constructacons for example. One thing I didn't like was that it seemed they overdid it with the 'transform' seen. It looked awesome the first few times but to do the whole process every time they'd transform got a little tiring. Either way, I hope to see another one, this time with more 'cast' from the Autobots and Deceptacons.

I saw this in the theatre and was blown away. Watching this at home was even better. When I first hooked up the HD DVD player to our main tv, I was watching Transformers with my kids when my wife came home. Her words were: "Holy CRAP! That's amazing!" The picture and sound are PERFECT!!!

Don't expect much continuity between the orgininal tv series and this movie. They have taken some liberites with the story and I must say, that it is not a bad thing. Some of the back story is interesting and it sets up the movie well. I really enjoyed it and look forward to Transformers 2.

A MUST OWN for all HD DVD owners!!!!

3.0 out of 5 stars Drop the Price, HD DVD is dead!, Mar 7 2008

The movie is excellent. The HD transfer is excellent. The price is a joke. 23$ for a dead format? If it was a combo disk with DVD on one side then yah...but twenty three dollars? It should be fifteen dollars max.

5.0 out of 5 stars Transforming expectations!, Oct 27 2007

Top notch movie.

This is why movies exist. Citizen Kane it's not, but that's okay. Not every movie has to be melodramatic and teach you a lesson. Sometimes a movie just has to be fun.

Legions of fans aside. Toy-line and cartoons ignored. This movie rocks! In fact, I found nothing to complain about at all. This is a beautiful popcorn flick that is a joy to experience.

The video transfer to HD is simply the best I have seen. Every detail is on glorious display. This movie is bright and sparkling. The huge robots are seen in full sunlight, and never once do you doubt they exist. Every frame of this HD DVD glows with a spectacular clarity unparalleled by any other title.

The sound is simply amazing. Every whir and click of the robots function can be heard. No wallop of the battle scenes are left without a visceral punch to the guts. And, even amongst the cacophony of slamming metal and grinding gears, the dialog remains clear and vibrant.

If special features are your thing, then you wont be disappointed here. There is simply too much included on this two disc set to watch in one sitting. Fantastic replay value.

For pure fun, Transformers 2 disk HD DVD gets a perfect 5 out of 5!

I watched this movie at the theatre with my son and nephews. We all loved the movie and will be purchasing the DVD upon release. I thought the animation was brilliant. It was a fun story line that young and old could enjoy. I loved the Camero, fun scene where it goes from clunker to top of the line model. Great entertainment value. I look forward to watching it again.

2.0 out of 5 stars The movie's fine, the price isn't!, Nov 6 2007
This review is from: Transformers [HD DVD] (HD DVD)
An HD-DVD on "sale" for $33? Regular price $50?! Sorry, in this day and age we only spend over $40 on BOX SETS of entire seasons - not 2 hours of movie goodness. It's not really a huge percentage savings when the regular price is simply inflated to make the 'sale' look good (when in fact it just brings the price in line with the rest of the planet. )

Buy the movie... but you aren't saving +30%!

3.0 out of 5 stars Far From the Old School, Oct 14 2007

When I heard that a new installment of Transformers was being released, I thought to myself, "alright, more then meets the eye, and Soundwave saying Megatron." I was in old school heaven, I re-watched my old seasons of the iconic 80's half hour toy commercial. But then I found out that Michael Bay is directing it and Speilberg was producing, so then this would be made into huge production with amazing effects a true landmark. But then I found out this movie was live action, first uh oh, but to give the movie its due it is remarkable at what can be done in from a green screen. CG has hit a new mark with this movie and how the real characters interact with the computer generated robots. This movie is quite a spectacle, and surprise, surprise there will definately be a second movie, which will make the first much, much better.

As a devotee to the original franchise of Transformers I was happy that Optimus Prime was voice acted by the original voice actor from the cartoon. Unfortunately, this is where the praise to this film ends. This film lacks a great many things that would make this a true blockbuster, and I realize many people enjoyed this movie; personally, a movie that takes place on "Planet America" with the main characters falling into a formula that is reminiscent of Independence Day, with there being the annoying, geeky, and social awkward all-Amerincan teen male with a really bad sarcastic sense of humour, the hot and popular all-American love interest, and extremely underaged girl with mini mini skirts. The Yo-joe, pro American hero solider/new father and family man trying to make it home. And this entire movie takes place on Planet America, with a scene in Qatar, but this is just a setting to introduce the soldier and his disposable soldier buddies. Basically, the Transformers are much more interesting and their acting is much, much more believable compared to the human actors, sad when a bunch of computer generated robots are more convincing, maybe in the next film they could make the humans CG too, since none of the acting is that interesting or inspired. This movie is about the product placement, a la car companies, Mountain Dew and a Microsoft, so in a way this is a big commercial, much like the cartoon from the 80's only on a more massive scale, with only a few references other countries in conversation only which limits the focus of this movie down to just something that happens in a certain place instead of a global threat. Throw in Jon Voigt because he needs to make some money, as the secretary of state, who doesn't really inspire anything asides saying 'robots' in a charming southern accent. Let me say this Shia LeBeouf or however his name may be spelled is beyond horrible, I couldn't even remember anything interesting or memorable about his character asides a pathetic attempt to be sarcastic and funny, most of the movie I was hoping that Shilo the Beef would die, or at least get maimed, but no such luck. Get some nice explosions and very corny dialogue, this movie is nothing more then eye candy.

My girlfriend thoroughly enjoyed this movie just for the CG robots and the large and grandeos battles; however, if you're a person who enjoys story, character, conflict and development you might want to smoke something or be half awake, this is not a great movie that will capivate you for almost 3 hours in fact chances are you'll forget what they're fighting for. Here's the test, watch this movie, rent, don't buy it, but at the end of the movie ask yourself what was the name of any of the lead character, and that's the mark of a forgetable movie, for sure you'll remember the names of the Transformers, but not all the characters.

This movie is good for small kids, if you're hoping for the original Transformers or even an adaptation of the battle for energon, then sorry this isn't the movie for you. Poor acting, and a lackluster and disposable story, with amazing visuals makes for a big blockbuster, ahhh well what can be expected from Michael Bay and Steven Spielberg? Something original and inspired?
