5.0 out of 5 stars Runaway Bride: what you didnt know!
The runaway bride is a classic story of a woman who tries to get married, but fears commitment. Before each attempted wedding is over, she puts on running shoes, and does just that; she runs. near the end of the movie, she finally finds the man right for her, and before the wedding starts, she gives him her running shoes, so she cannot run away (no really). warning: this...

3.0 out of 5 stars Still a fun flick
I thought this movie was fun. It was a light romantic comedy in the old fashioned sense, a good film to watch on a rainy afternoon where you want to veg. I had the priveledge of getting to see how a town is transformed to be used as the background of a movie, with this movie. It was filmed in the small town of Berlin, Maryland, which is half way between Salisbury, MD...

4.0 out of 5 stars Bad film, uh NO..., April 8 2004

This review is from: Runaway Bride (VHS Tape)
Well, PW it's not...but I liked it.

Unlike most people I don't go to the movies or watch a video expecting anything in particular. I wasn't watching the movie with a view to Gere and Roberts previous endeavor, and I mean that. I'd missed it. It looked interesting to me, so I watched it.

Ya know, it's a CUTE movie, well done and IMHO a lot of fun.

I enjoyed the antics of the supporting cast. I thought Gere and Roberts did a nice job and had some amazing chemistry besides. Yeah, the town was a tad phony, but not so much so that I didn't buy her living there. It was a bit touristy, but still very much a real community underneath the facade.

I don't think it's so wise to compare one film to another all the time, particularly when you're talking about a blockbuster like PW. When you do that it's often far too easy to get caught up with what you THINK the actors should be doing. Being so critical you just might miss something worthwhile doing it.

Fact is if they had not done PW and made such an impact 90% of these bad reviews would likely have been a LOT kinder. There is nothing wrong with "Runaway Bride" except for the fact that folks expected another PW instead of the quainter, quieter film they got. On it's own merit this film was warm, funny, and far wiser than it's being given credit for, more "real" than Pretty Woman and I enjoyed that. It was nice to see Gere and Roberts together again, and clearly enjoying the experience. It was fun to watch and I'd cheerfully do it again sometime. I hope they will sometime too.

As far as I am concerned this film is a keeper, period.

I had the priveledge of getting to see how a town is transformed to be used as the background of a movie, with this movie. It was filmed in the small town of Berlin, Maryland, which is half way between Salisbury, MD and Ocean City, MD. The kind of town people like to drop into because it looks so nice. Lots of Antique shops, and such, but it was neat to see how they painted the windows and made signs for the movie backgrounds. Person that said, makes you want to pack up and move to Vermont? Sure isn't Vermont, and I am told that the hilly scenes were just outside of Baltimore on the Western Shore of Maryland. Eastern Shore (where Berlin is, the town was changed to Hale for the movie) is flat as a pancake.

1.0 out of 5 stars this is a horrible movie., Dec 2 2003

what a badly scripted movie! the runaway bride as this movie portrayed is absolutely ridiculous. and the performances of all the actors and actresses were so poor that the only logic explanation was because of the lousy script. what a pathetic waste of richard gere and julia roberts. one of the worst movies ever watched.

4.0 out of 5 stars Runaway Sweet Story, Nov 19 2003

I love that Roberts didn't make down the aisle the first time with Gere. I love that she had to become her own person on her own terms and come to him sans baggage. Nice. The scenery in this movie is fabulous; it makes you want to pack up and move to Vermont! Roberts smartly plays a woman who is trying to find herself within other people. Joan Cusack is terrific as her best friend, who accepts and supports her, but also voices her own feelings as well. The scene in the beauty parlor is very nice. Cusack nails it: Roberts is the attention hog when it comes to men, and Cusack would like her to at least not take attention from her hubby. Gere is convincing as a reporter first, in need of a story, later desparate to keep his own credibility. Rita Wilson is fabulous as Gere's caring ex-wife. Very pleasant film.

3.0 out of 5 stars "I am profoundly and irreversibly screwed up.", Oct 4 2003
Lightweight and sugary are two words that can be used to describe Garry Marshall's "Runaway Bride." Surprisingly another word that can be used to describe this film is entertaining. While the re-teaming of Marshall, Julia Roberts, and Richard Gere for a second time does not produce as memorable a time as their first effort, "Pretty Woman" (1990), "Runaway Bride" is still enjoyable in its own sweet way.

A drunk tells reporter Ike Graham (Gere) a strange story of a woman named Maggie Carpenter (Roberts) who has a strange habit of developing cold feet at the altar over and over again. This tale inspires him to write a nasty article about her that eventually results in a reply from Carpenter. He becomes intrigued by this feisty woman and travels to her hometown to investigate her further. Carpenter is annoyed with his snooping but eventually the pair is drawn to one another and true love blossoms in the best cinematic fairy-tale fashion.

Sure, it will not take you long to figure out how "Runaway Bride" will end once you start watching it, but the film still works thanks to the direction by veteran Marshall, the natural charm of the two leads and strong supporting performances by Paul Dooley, Joan Cusack, Jean Schertler, and Christopher Meloni, Rita Wilson, and Hector Elizondo. There is nothing deep or profound to be found in this film as it is basically a modern-day version of a Seventies-era sit-com with all its formulaic conventions intact. Accept it on those terms and you'll find that "Runaway Bride" is a harmless romantic comedy that will put a smile on your face and a skip in your step. Chase it down for a fun time.

1.0 out of 5 stars Horrible, July 11 2003
I watched this movie with my wife unfortunately. Unfortunate that I watched this movie, not that I viewed it with my wife. The movie was so bad that we left 3/4 into it. It was so bad that even my wife agreed it was horrible and she left with me. Julia Roberts while having a good smile is not the best of actresses. Case in point is Ocean's Eleven.

Ok, so I didn't expect this to be as good as pretty woman, but I did expect it to be pretty good since Julia Roberts and Ricard Gere were in it. I didn't enjoy it much. It moved kind of slow, and the whole movie all I kept waiting for was the reason she kept running away at the altar, and without giving away the ending, I thought it was a really flaky and unsubstantial reason. I didn't really enjoy it. I didn't find it very funny, I never laughed out loud once through the whole movie. If you like romantic comedies, try the wedding singer.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not What You Expect, Jan 11 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Runaway Bride (VHS Tape)
Runaway Bride is about a woman who is about to get married to a guy but, leaves him at the alter. While this is happening an unattractive man tells Ike Graham (Richard Gere)about this bride (Julia Roberts). Ike writes this in the newspaper since he's a reporter who really needs an eye catching story. Maggie Carpenter finds the story and writes an angry letter that gets Ike fired. Ike believes his sorce and says it's true. Now the plan is to go to Maggie's home town and prove he's right. While he's doing this Maggie(Roberts) is engaged again and says she will marry this man for sure. Still of course, Ike doesn't believe her. What ends up happening is Ike falls in love with Maggie and wants to marry her. As you can expect he ends up getting the girl.
This movie is exactly like Pretty Woman. It has the same falling in love scenes and comedy. With this movie being about two hours of this, it can get old pretty quick. Only difference is the setting and storyline. This is why I think this movie deserves 2 stars.
