Better than Pretty Woman and Notting Hill.,
By A Customer
This review is from: Runaway Bride (VHS Tape)
I never liked Pretty Woman much but I did love My Best Friend's Wedding. In 1999 I saw Notting Hill and didn't found nothing spectacular about it and then a couple of weeks later I saw Runaway Bride's trailer and kinda liked it so I went to see it and waoo I felt that it was as good or maybe even better than My Best Friend's Wedding which was my favorite Julia Roberts movie now I can't decide between those two. At last I see what is the chemistry between Roberts and Gere, even though I don't sense it on Pretty Woman. I didn't liked Erin Brockovich much, she is better with Romantic Comedies.

A Romantic Comedy With a Fresh Plot, but Still Dissapointing,
This review is from: Runaway Bride (VHS Tape)
Runaway Bride is bearable, but only for a big fan of romantic comedy, Richard Gere, and Julia Roberts. It does gives a fresh, funny look at Romantic Comedy (though not much more). Julia Roberts shines (as always) in her role as a confused woman with the bad habit of dumping grooms at the altar. Richard Gere has an average performance as a cold-hearted opinion journalist. Gere, who plays Ike Graham, is fired after the newspaper is sued by Maggie Carpenter (Roberts) for slanderous and untruthful journalism. Ike seeks out Maggie to prove that his article was not unmerited, and to salvage his career. At first, when Ike and Maggie meet, they greatly dislike each other. After a while, though, Ike begins to understand Maggie more, and they become friends. They grow closer, and Maggie ends up dumping her fiance for Ike- definitely an unbelievable move. The acting is average, and the plot is new, but contrived. In the end this is an alright flick, but it does not succeed on many other levels.

Horrible!,

This is one of the worst movies I've ever seen! It's advertised as being a "follow-up" to Pretty Woman? I don't think so! This movie is nowhere near as good as Pretty Woman! The script is weak, it's completley miscast...I could go on! Don't waste your time or money on this one!

I have to admit I was not one of the millions of people that rushed to see "Runaway Bride" while it wa still in theatres. I waited until it came out on video so I wouldn't feel that I had wasted all that money on soda and popcorn to see a bomb. I was pleasantly surprised! Julia Roberts and Richard Geer do a fantastic job of creating instant on screen chemistry, and really carry this movie off. This is a terrific romantic love story, and I put it in the same class as "When Harry Met Sally...". If you haven't seen it, give it a try, I don't think you'll be disappointed.

I was surprised about how likable this charming and funny movie was! I enjoy Julia Robert's films, she really is appealing to the audience, especially here. Julia plays a woman named Maggie who has a---wedding-phobia. She leaves her loves at the alter. When a reporter (Richard Gere) trys to get the scoop on her crazy story, he slowly falls in love with her, but will she leave him hanging at their big wedding? Enjoyable romp that should please fans of Roberts and Gere's earlier movie hit, "Pretty Woman". Check it out!

Why Would Anyone Not Want to Marry Richard Gere?,
By A Customer
This review is from: Runaway Bride (VHS Tape)
Julia Roberts would have been crazy not to have run after prospective groom Richard Gere! Gere's not only easy on the eyes, his acting is wonderful (once again) in Runaway Bride. Roberts' performance however, I thought left something to be desired. It just didn't live up to what we know she can do and that which we have seen in Pretty Woman. It was nevertheless a charming movie with reaonably high entertainment value.

Julia Roberts is not my favorite actress. I don't happen to think she's as beautiful as her PR alludes (or as some men think), nor do I like her trademark that is inserted at least once in all of her films -- that sudden, loud, whooping laugh. I shudder whenever I hear it, sounding something like traditional female hysterics. Roberts played a lot of weak, nervous, vulnerable, even helpless women in the past (hence I think her popularity with men, who like that type best), but she's matured. I was surprised that in this film, except for the whooping, she was quite good -- a nicely controlled comedic performance. Roberts has her vulnerability down much better, now showing up as that shadow behind the eyes, the elusive unnameable doubt or indecision that is harming her romantic life. Of course, this movie doesn't recognize real truth -- women don't have to marry. A wedding is not the most important day/event of a woman's life, but just one of the important and hopefully good ones. So Hollywood like all supposedly liberal media is a little backward on women's roles in society. The film still turned out to be delightful fun. Roberts' friends in her small town are zany; her family is warm and realistic; and the situations presented are ones that real people face all the time. Starting out as a smart-mouthed, NYC misogynist, Gere is perfectly understated, intrusive, then wise as the man of Roberts' dreams, though it takes a tantalizingly long time for both of them to realize this. Eventually, the psychological and emotional aspects are dealt with, and the film reaches a satisfying ending. Roberts' character settled her fears, became her own woman (e.g., explored herself and succeeded at her dreams), and then could face up to a mature and happy romance. Gere grows as well, putting aside his bitterness to take a chance on love, then a chance on forgiveness. It was very enjoyable, with some great comedic scenes and lines from supporting cast. A fine film, especially in comparison to typical Hollywood fare of masculine violence, masculine idiocy, or masculine abuse of women. This is a great film for family and for those who want to spend a pleased 2+ hours watching a sweet contemporary romance and wacky small town home life. Highly recommended!

Julia Roberts and Richard Gere are together again...,

This review is from: Runaway Bride (VHS Tape)
The dynamic duo that captured your heart in "Pretty Woman" are back in a wonderful new movie! "Runaway Bride" stars Julia Roberts as plucky Maggie Carpenter, a country girl who dresses up her boyfriends as grooms, plans their entire wedding, and then dumps them at the altar. When big-city reporter Ike Graham (Richard Gere) publishes an insulting article about Maggie, she demands to have him fired. He decides to visit her in her hometown of Hale, Maryland, to collect more information (and hopefully an exciting story about her fourth wedding, taking place that weekend). But when the two meet, they start to fall in love. This film was cute and romantic, and the witty chemistry between Maggie and Ike steals the show! This movie has a great ending, and I recommend it to any Julia Roberts fan, or anyone looking for a good romantic comedy. Two thumbs up!
