Refreshing, Outstanding, Original and exceedingly silly,

This review is from: Flight of the Conchords: Season 1 (DVD)
One of the funniest sitcom type shows ever filmed. I don't believe I've seen anything I could enjoy watching repeatedly this much in a long time. I will be buying several copies of this and shipping them to my family members who have been long time Monty Python fans. This HBO series is based on two young New Zealanders (Bret and Jemaine) who move to New York and try to hit the big time with their band (of 2). They have a part time manager Murray, who holds formal band meetings at his office at the New Zealand consulate during work time, and a fanbase of 1 (Mel)(although the fanbase did fluctuate between 3 and zero). The structure of the humour is very fresh and delightfully deadpan. Each episode introduces a new song which will have you rolling on the floor. I give this DVD 5 stars and strongly recommend you buy it and become a fan of the show.

Flight of the Bizarre Sense of Humour,
By
This review is from: Flight of the Conchords: Season 1 (DVD)
This series is a fantastic example of what two guys from New Zealand with a really strange sense of humour who sing, play guitars and adjust to life in the harsh climate of New York can accomplish when they set out to create a TV show. The comedy is often dry and blunt, but these two kiwi simpletons and their collection of quirky acquaintances had me rolling on the floor laughing, and if this isn't the effect this show has on you, then you truly must not have a sense of humour. If you enjoy this show, check out the British version of "The Office", the wonderful Irish show "Father Ted", or the Canadian show "The Newsroom" for a good time.

This show is extremely cute, witty and musically pleasing. Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement have a truly unique comedic talent and dynamic, and the supporting cast is consistently delightful. If you are a fan of self-depricating humor and inventive music montages which manage to be both cheesy and completely endearing, you will love this show.

This comedy is right up your ally if you like Python, Adder and Red Dwarf. The humour is so understated you may miss the jokes if you are not paying attention. What I like about this is that they give the audience credit for intelligence, they don't have to shove the comedy in your face. Two New Zealanders (Jemaine and Brett) in a duo trying to make it in the USA with the "help" of their manager (Murray) who also works at the New Zealand consulate and who always has to do a roll call at band meetings (for all 3 of them). Murray for example sold hundreds of their CD's to a store who bought them since they were re-writable he could delete what was on there and sell them as blanks. "So your CD's are getting out there, pretty good eh?" Every episode has a new song with music video with hilarious words and they are stalked by their only fan. She's married but obviously has the hots for Brett tho they both seemed a bit scared of women. Oh and by the way they all hate Australians.

Jermaine and Bret are a pair of New Zealand musicians, living in New York City and hoping to hit it big. Yeah, "Flight of the Conchords: The Complete First Season" sounds like a terrible generic sitcom, but instead this series is one of the most hilarious comedies of the last decade -- a quirky, weird, tongue-in-cheek little show with hilarious dialogue. Think a musical version of "The Office."Folk-pop group Flight of the Conchords is Jermaine Clement and Bret McKenzie (played by themselves), who came all the way from New Zealand to New York. They are being managed by the ineffectual New Zealand Consulate official Murray (Rhys Darby), and they have exactly one fan/stalker, Mel (Kristen Schaal). They don't have many gigs, and even fewer successful ones. As they chase elusive fame'n'fortune, the guys have to deal with girlfriend woes (dating the same girl, a "Yoko", a girl who just wants to use Bret for sex), Bret getting a job, muggings, body image problems, anti-Kiwi racism, a problematic band rock'n'roll tour, two new fans with impure intentions, a semi-professional actor/compulsive liar who makes Murray think they've got a multimillion-dollar deal, and a bongo player who threatens to divide the band. If I had to come up with a description for "Flight of the Conchords," it would be that they're the folky New Zealand love child of Spinal Tap and "The Office." No laugh track, rambling dialogue, and the main characters tend to spontaneously break into song-and-dance at pivotal parts of the plot. And it's brilliant. The writing is brimming over with effortless weirdness, as the guys encounter everyday problems (threesomes, girlfriend woes, racism) which soon turn into hilariously surreal situations (the disturbing children's show, "Albi the Racist Dragon"). The dialogue is amazing ("She's a pastry chef and a sniper"), and full of rambling conversations that just get stranger with every line ("Have you ever had a threesome?" "Nearly." "What do you mean, nearly?" "I've had a twosome"). The songs are gutsplitting as well, since they're all about homicidal robots, mermaids, hermaphrodites ("Oh you sexy hermaphrodite lady-man-ladies"), and the hiphop-potamus. Not to mention "Frodo, Don't Wear the Ring" and its accompanying music video, which are a nod to McKenzie's role as the elf Figwit. But none of this would be even half as funny if it weren't for the actors -- Clement's self-named chatacter is stoic and kind of weird (he writes a song about putting a wig on Bret), while McKenzie's is more childlike, naive and likes to sit in a cardboard box. Darby rounds out the cast as their harried, rather pathetic manager (who isn't even supposed to be managing a band), and Schaal is also quite funny as a woman who has a creepy sexual fixation on the guys. "Flight of the Conchords: The Complete First Season" is one of the rarest kind of comedy out there -- steady, hysterical, and only gets better with repeated viewings. Too bad there's only one more season.

I absolutely thought it was hilarious! These two unknown Kiwi's (New Zealanders) move to America to make it big, and find it's not as easy as they would have hoped. There are some great characters in this series that make you want to watch more and the musical numbers are odd, but that's what makes the Flight of the Conchords unique. With the help of their band manager Murray and their number one fan Mel, and Dave the pawnshop owner, this has become one of my favorite shows!

Move over Mel; Flight of the Conchords has another fan! This is fun watching over and over again. Each time I watch an episode I see something else that's new. Love the posters on the Murray's wall. Great fun! Another coworker also has the DVD. We share laughs, sing the songs to each other and have a great time discussing each episode. Once you've purchased the DVDs you'll want to get the Flight of the Conchords CD so you can sing along with the songs!!! Worth every penny... and more. I can hardly wait until Season 2 comes out on DVD!
