I had seen this movie before in its original 2-D format and the movie itself is incredible, but when they came out with the 3-D version, I could not wait to scoop it up. Total waste of time and money. You never get a clear picture of the faces, it is like watching it in double vision, and nothing jumps out at you. Waste of your money, just buy the 2-D version.

The Polar Express is yet another in a long line of movies intended to be the next big Christmas classic. However, whether it can actually pull this feat off is yet another thing.

They certainly try to give it the vibe of a classic with a look and a feel that's right out of the late 40's, early 50's that will prove very nostalgic to my generation. In fact, I'd say this movie is more aimed at boomers, than their children or grandchildren with it's 50's look and feel and emphasis on simple family values. No I-Pod generation here.

In terms of visuals, the movie certainly is gorgeous. Pristine white snow, a gleaming polar express with all the bells and whistles and eventually when they make it to the pole, acres upon acres of elf cityscape that reminds me of the buildings that I used to assemble from bricks as a kid! All very nice though a bit sterile. And the audio is equally impressive as the train arrives with a rumbling that would truly wake the dead! However the movie never relly quite jelled for me.

Why? Perhaps because it's too prim, too perfect. The North Pole should be a thing of wonder, but it ends up looking like another perfectly assembled Lego land. All prim, proper and very artificial. The journey to the Pole has lots of thundering tracks and close calls, yet in the end reminds me of nothing more than yet another typical roller coaster fun ride! It never really came alive for me.

Even the CGI itself is a bit problematic. The movie was done with motion capture; nothing unusual there. But instead of rendering it's 3D characters as typical animated characters; instead they're given an almost humanlike look and feel. If you're expecting a normal Pixar style animated movie; it can be a bit disconcerting. Some folks even report that it feels a bit creepy, particularly in the elves. Personally, this didn't particularly bother me; but your mileage may vary.

The movie certainly has the big screen look to it being an extremely wide 2.40:1 ratio. So I probably wouldn't recommend you watch this on anything smaller than about a 40" flatscreen or you may miss a lot of the more subtle details.

I should also point out that this Steelbook bluray has only the standard Dolby Digital 5.1 English track. It sounds fine and impressive, but if you were expecting a high definition audio track, you won't find it here. The BD also lacks the dvd's French and Spanish 5.1 tracks as well. But does retain the French and Spanish subtitles. So this steelbook probably isn't the best choice for non-English speakers.

A good simple little christmas style movie that should impress the younger crowd and may bring a bit of nostalgia to their grandparents. But not a christmas classic. I'd rate it at 3-1/2 out of 5.

It is a great movie. We always wanted to own a copy. Kids love it. Blue ray quality is excellent. But I was very disappointed that no DVD copy was included. So I can not play the movie on my computer. This is the first blue ray movie that I purchased that did not come with a DVD copy. I wish it was made clear in the product description.

Received the item in not so good condition-had a slash in it on the case cover(was supposed to be a gift but couldn't give it to them in this condition). I tried to contact seller about it but he never responded to my email :(
